Review & Intro: In Chapter 33, we saw the blessings that were passed on to the 12 tribes of Israel through Moses before he would die, and before they passed over the Jordan into the Promised Land. In this final chapter of the Book of Deuteronomy, Chapter 34, we say good-bye to Moses, as he is instructed by God to go up to Mt. Nebo, look out over the land of promise, and lay down to die. He dies at 120 years of age. No man knows the place of his burial, but we are told that God Himself buried him. That is truly special. What a man; what a prophet. In fact, no other prophet was like Moses, with whom God spoke face to face. Deuteronomy Chapter 34 - Observation Questions 1. In the New Testament, one of the men chosen to care for widows while the apostles were devoting themselves to the Word and prayer, was Stephen. Stephen , who was full of grace and power, was performing great wonders and signs among the people. Some men rose up to argue with him, but were unable to cope with the wisdom and the Spirit that was talking through him. They induced men to say that he was speaking against Moses and God and got the people stirred up against him. Before he was literally "stoned to death" to become the first martyr for our Lord, he gave a great history lesson on Moses. It shows us how Moses' life was portioned out into sections of 40 years each. Moses was raised as the son of Pharaoh for 40 years; then he fled and lived in the land of Midian for 40 years before he saw the burning bush in his 80th year of life and the Lord called him to be the deliverer of His people from slavery in Egypt. We know he led the children of Israel through the wilderness and gave them the commandments of God through a period of 40 years. That is the 120 years that he lived. Now, we have come to the end of his life and his writings as we read the last chapter of Deuternonomy. Review & Intro: In Chapter 32, we saw the words to the song of Moses, that the Israelites were to learn and be able to recall once they were banished to other lands after they did not keep the commandments of the Lord, but would turn to other gods and serve them. God promised them restoration after their hearts turned back to Him. In Chapter 33, right before Moses dies, he gives blessings to the tribes of Israel, as Israel (Jacob) did before his death in Genesis chapter 49. It is interesting to compare them if you have time to. He reminds Israel before his death that there is no nation on earth like them and that they have the everlasting arms of the Lord to hold them up. Deuteronomy Chapter 33 - Observation Questions 1. How important it is that we pronounce blessings upon our children and remind them of God's promises. We will do well to pay attention to the light that was given through the prophets and the apostles to come out of darkness and be in His light and to shine that light upon others. Review & Intro: In Chapter 31, Moses encouraged Joshua and the children of Israel to be strong and courageous as they entered the Promised Land. He was not going to cross over with them, but the One that matters would be with them, and go ahead of them - the Lord Himself! Joshua was commissioned to be the leader in place of Moses. Moses at 120 years of age was about to die. Before his death, there was one more thing to do. God asked him to write a song so that the Israelites could learn it and then remember it one day when they would be banished from the land and longing to return to Him. They would remember why they were away from Him and how to return to Him. In Chapter 32, we have the song! Let's look at it together. Deuteronomy Chapter 32 - Observation Questions 1. In the New Testament everyone who is not a Jew (Hebrew; Israelite) is considered a Gentile. All the nations that are not Israel are called Gentile nations. God had a plan from the beginning that the Lamb of God would be slain for the sins of the whole world. When the Israelites rejected God, God brought in the Gentiles, but God will give Israel a future and a hope. He will atone for the Land of Promise and for His People, Israel. He will make the nations and the people pay who afflict His own. God knows how His children are treated and no one will get away with harming them. (vs.40-43). This is what God's wrath in the end of the world is all about. When we read the seals that break, the trumpets that sound, and the bowls of wrath that are poured out in the book of Revelation, it is God's wrath being spent on those who have tried to destroy His land and His people. They will have the Gospel preached to them, but if they refuse to repent, they will pay the price of eternal damnation. Review & Intro: In Chapter 30, Moses is warning the nation of Israel of the consequences they will bear if they turn from God and serve other gods after his death. They will surely be scattered and taken away from the land. He speaks, however, into the future tense, saying that the Lord will bring them back to the land and restore their fortunes, as well as giving them new hearts to fear Him and obey Him. In Chapter 31, the Israelites will be given the notice that Moses will not go across the river of Jordan with them, but the Lord will go ahead of them and give them success. He lets the people know that Joshua is the new leader that will be taking them in. They need not fear for the Lord will not fail them or forsake them. This feast looked back to the time when God tabernacled among the people in the wilderness. But it also points forward to the Millennial Reign of Christ, when He returns to earth, ruling and reigning from Jerusalem's Temple Mount. As it turns out, this command of Moses becomes a prophecy of that time, because one day, when the Lord tabernacles among us on earth, the eternal Word will be read to us again. This song of Moses would be taught to the children and the descendants would continue to remember it even after years of captivity off of the land in the years to come. (vs.21,22) ...After this, Moses commissioned Joshua. What were his words to him? vs. 23 26. When Moses finished writing the words of this law in a book, he had the Levites who carried the ark of the covenant to place the book beside the ark of the covenant to remain there as a witness to the Israelites. (vs.24-26) ... Moses knew how rebellious and stubborn they were while he has been alive; what did he know they would be like after his death? vs. 27 27. The Lord said to assemble all the elders of the tribes and their officers so that He could address them. (vs. 28) ... What did Moses tell them they would be like after his death in the latter days? vs. 29 Note: In Chapter 32, we will see the words of the song that Moses wrote and spoke in the hearing of them all until they were complete. (vs.30) ... Applicaton 28. The Lord told the Israelites to be strong and courageous because He would be with them and not forsake them. Later, Moses told Joshua the same thing. Do you have a situation that you need courage to face? The Lord has given us the same assurance. Hebrews 13:5 says "I will never desert you; nor will I ever forsake you." Spend time in prayer for the situation you need to have courage in. 29. The Lord gave Moses a song to teach to the sons of Israel because once they got into the promised land, they would eat and be satisfied and become prosperous, causing them to forsake the Lord. When He brought judgment to them and they were no longer in the land, they would remember the song and realize they once again needed the Lord. Many times when we are in prosperity, we forget our need for God. It is important to learn how to live in times of prosperity as well as times of adversity. Comment on the following verses: Proverbs 30:7-9 - Philippians 4:11-13 - 1 Timothy 6:8-10 - 1 Timothy 6:17-19 - 30. Have you ever been away from the Lord and found that you lost the joy of your salvation? Many times, a song can bring us back into His presence. I thought of several tonight when I was writing this lesson. I went over to our Christian video section and listened to a few of them. One in particular is "Power of Your Love" by Hillsong. David states that in the presence of the Lord there is fullness of joy. Nehemiah states that the joy of the Lord is our strength. Moses wrote a song so that they could remember it when they found themselves without strength and needing God's touch. Ask the Lord to put a song in your heart and share it with us if you would like. Deuteronomy Worksheet - Chapter 30

Review & Intro: In Chapter 29, they were warned against anyone having a root of poison and wormwood among them. We looked into the New Testament to see that we can also have a root that is poison through jealousies, anger, and bitterness. These things must be dealt with so that others are not defiled by them. God can heal us, but we must return to Him with our whole hearts. We saw how blessed we are to have eyes to see and ears to hear what the Spirit is speaking to us. In Chapter 30, the Lord makes it clear that they will serve other gods and be scattered away from the land eventually, but also they will bring the blessings and the curse to mind and they will return to the Lord from the places that they have been scattered. The Lord will bring them back to the land and restore them and He will circumcise their hearts to love Him and obey Him. Wow, this is a great lesson. He puts before us "life and death", and He asks us to choose "life". Will we? Deuteronomy Chapter 30 - Observation Questions 1.
