Jacob sent for Rachel and Leah and told them that their father had not been friendly to him as before but that the God of his father had been with him.

6.  What did Jacob acknowledge as the reason their father had not done him any physical harm?

In fact, God watched over the livestock and made sure to bless the ones that would be Jacob's according to the words that Laban would speak, hoping to get them for himself.  (refer back to chapter 30 to review the arrangement they had made over the livestock disbursement among them.)

7.  The angel of God spoke to Jacob in a dream. 

He told him to see with his eyes what was being done with the cattle for He was blessing him because He saw how Laban had been deceiving him. 

8.  What does the Lord say to Jacob as well in this dream? vs. 13 -

Our God is Sovereign, meaning that He rules over all.  We can know that when we are cheated, lied to, abused, or whatever the situation, God sees our suffering and He is going to help us and vindicate us.  He is the judge over all and the people that touch His anointed ones will not get away from facing His judgment.

Back to Genesis 31:

10.  Jacob took his wives and possessions that he had gathered in Paddan-aram and left for the land of Canaan to return to his father Isaac. 

What did Rachel take from her father's house as they were leaving?

Jacob did not tell Laban they were leaving.  On the 3rd day, Laban was told that Jacob had fled.  Laban took his kinsmen and pursued Jacob for a distance of seven days' journey and overtook him in the hill country of Gilead.

11.  What did God tell Laban in regard to Jacob in a dream?

When Laban caught up with Jacob, he asked him why he had deceived him and taken his grandchildren and daughters away without him being able to say good-bye to them and give them a proper farewell blessing.

12.  Although Laban felt it was in his power to harm Jacob, what did he say stopped him from doing so?

Laban said that he understood that Jacob wanted to return to the land of his father and worship his father's God, but he wanted to know why he had stolen his gods (household idols)?  Of course, Jacob did not know that Rachel had stolen them.  He said that the one who took the idol must die. Although Rachel was not found out since she had the idol hidden in the camel's saddle and that was not searched because she told her father she was in her womanly time....she did suffer death not long after this, in giving birth to her second son.  We will read about it in a few chapters. When Laban searched all the tents and did not find the household idols that he was accusing Jacob of stealing, Jacob stated his own case before him.

13.  How did Jacob describe how faithful he had been to Laban the past 20 years?

Laban asked Jacob if they could make a covenant between them to not do one another any harm since they both shared his daughters and his grandchildren.  He asked Jacob to treat his daughters well and never take other wives.  They set up stones in a heap, ate a covenant meal together, and promised one another not to  harm one another for the sake of the daughters and children.

14.  What was the heap called and what did it mean?

Early the next morning, Laban kissed his sons and his daughters and blessed them.  Then Laban departed and returned to his place.

Let the competition continue.  (lol)... When Leah saw that she was not bearing any more children, she decided to give Jacob her maid so she could have more sons through her. (the sisters are definitely competing, but God's plan of the 12 tribes of Jacob (Israel) are being accomplished through this)

9.  Who named the boys and what did she base the meanings of the names around?

10. In the days of wheat harvest, Leah's son Reuben found some mandrakes in the field and brought them to Leah.  Rachel wanted some of the mandrakes. 

What did Rachel trade off with Leah to get some of the mandrakes?

Obviously Jacob did not spend much intimacy with Leah (the older sister he was deceived into marrying), but only with Rachel, the one he worked so many years for and had loved from the beginning.

Note: Why were the mandrakes such a big deal?  They were fleshy, forked roots that resembled the lower part of the human body and were superstitously thought to induce pregnancy when eaten.  They are mentioned also in Song of Solomon 7:13.   Rachel wants to conceive a child so badly and Leah would like to conceive again as well.

11. Leah conceived that night!  What did she name her fifth son born to Jacob and why? vs. 18 -

12. She conceived again and had a sixth son for Jacob.  This is Jacob's tenth son.  What is her hope by having more sons for him than the others have had and how is it reflected in this son's name? vs. 20 -

After the birth of Joseph, Jacob wanted to return to his own country.  He asked for Laban to release him.

Application:

20. Think through the barren women that the Lord had closed the wombs on that we have looked at today in the lesson.  Think about the reason God had in having them 'wait' to bear a child.

Sarah ... in the fulness of time.. had Issac Rebekah ... in the fulness of time...had Jacob (& his brother Esau as twins) Rachel ... in the fulness of time...had Joseph (the one who will be used mightily to keep his family alive in the famine to come when he will rule over the land of Egypt) Hannah ...  in the fulness of time...had Samuel (the Lord's prophet used greatly in King David's life).... Not mentioned in this lesson, but remember as well .... Elizabeth ... in the fulness of time...had John the Baptist (the forerunner of the Messiah - Jesus)

21. God has a reason to open and close the womb.  God has a reason for every life born at the very time that the life is born for that point in history and time.

Genesis Chapter 29

Jacob went on his journey and came to the land of the sons of the east.  He saw a well in the field with 3 flocks of sheep lying beside it. This well was used to water the sheep and when they finished watering them, they would roll the large stone back on top of the well. Jacob asked the men he saw where they were from.  They were from Haran. He wanted to know if they knew Laban, son of Nahor.  They said they did.  He asked them if all was well with him.  They said it was well.

1. Who did they saw was coming at that time with his sheep?

2. What did Jacob do when he saw her and the sheep with her?

• vs. 10 -

3. What did he do after this?

• vs. 11 -

He told Rachel that he was a relative of her father; that he was Rebekah's son.  She ran to tell her father the news.

4. How did Laban react to the news of Jacob, Rebekah's son?

After being there a month, Laban asked Jacob what wages he should be paid for his labor to him since he was his relative.

5.  What did Jacob say he would work 7 years to receive?

Laban said he would rather give her to him than another man and agreed that after seven years of work, Jacob could have Rachel as a wife.

6. How long did the 7 years seem to Jacob and why?

7. After the 7 years were completed, it was time for Jacob to receive his wife for the work he had done.  Laban gathered all the men of the place and made a feast. 

In the evening, who did he take to Jacob's tent?

8. Who was she and how was she different from Rachel, the one Jacob loved?

When morning came after the wedding night, Jacob saw that he had been given Leah instead of Rachel.

9. What did he say to Laban?

Jacob had deceived his father Isaac and although it was in God's plans for him to receive the covenant blessings, he had used deception to receive it.  God worked all things together to bring about the good intended, but there was still the law of 'sowing and reaping' in motion.

What is the Bible clear about regarding this?

• Galatians 6:7 -

Laban simply said it was not their practice to give the younger before the older one.  He said after the wedding week with Leah, he would give him Rachel as well for another 7 years of work.  Jacob agreed to it for her.

Laban gave each of his daughters a maid as they married.

Finally Jacob got to be with the one he loved and had worked for, Rachel.

12. The Lord saw that Leah was unloved.  What did He do for her?

14. Leah concieved and bore Jacob's firstborn son.  They named him Reuben. 

What did Leah hope would happen because of this birth?

She knew the Lord gave her another son because she was unloved.

16. On the third son, named Levi - what did Leah hope for this time?

Take Note:  Of the four sons that Leah blessed Jacob with, Levi was the father of the Aaronic Priesthood and Judah was the 'seed' that the Messiah would eventually come through!  Although she did not have the love of her husband, she had the love of the Lord.  Her life was of great significance in the Lord's plan of the ages.  Many times, we cannot see what God is doing because we are so focused on the approval of a person we want to love us.

18. Can you think of a time when you were blinded to the goodness of God's work in your life because you were focusing on the attention of a person instead?

Isaac kept his word to bless Jacob.

Isaac sent Jacob to Laban, Rebekah's brother, in Paddan-aram. Esau saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob and told him to go to Rebekah's family and not to take a wife from the daughters of Canaan.  He saw that Jacob obeyed his parents in this.

4.  What does Esau deliberately do to cause his parents more pain?

Jacob left Beersheba and went toward Haran.  He came to a certain place and spent the night there because the sun had set.  He took one of the stones to put under his head and laid down there.

Just as Abraham 'saw the Lord's day' and rejoiced as he looked upon Mount Moriah on the day he was asked to sacrifice Isaac ... this was Jacob's vision from the Lord to most likely show him the 'Lord's day' as well.  Those in the Old Testament heard of the Messiah to come and as they believed, they were saved by faith ... in our days, we look back on the Messiah who came and fulfilled the Scriptures.  We believe in His death, burial, and resurrection, that He is the Son of God..and we are saved by faith.  Amen.

Genesis Chapter 27

1. Isaac was old and his eyesight was not good.  He called his older son Esau by his side and told him he did not know when he would die. 

• What did he want Esau to do for him in his old age? vs. 1-4

2. What did Isaac plan to do for Esau before he died? vs. 4 -

The blessing was to go along with the birthright and Isaac most likely did not know that Esau sold his birthright to Jacob and therefore despised it.  Esau wanted the blessings but cared nothing about the birthright.

3. Read and comment on Esau's attitude toward his birthright:

• Genesis 25:27-34 -

Since Esau is the oldest of the twins, it is natural that Isaac believes he should give the blessing with the birthright to him, but God has already revealed to Rebekah in her pregnancy that His plans are not the same as those of man's natural thinking.

4. What did God tell Rebekah when she inquired of Him about the struggle going on in her womb?

Back to Genesis 27:

5. Who was listening and heard what Isaac told Esau?

Rebecca knew from the Lord Himself that the covenant blessings were to be passed on to the younger son, Jacob.

Back to Genesis 27:

Rebekah helped Jacob to appear hairy like Esau for his father's touch and helped prepare the meal with savory flavor for Isaac to eat. Jacob deceived his father Isaac and Isaac believed that it was Esau he was giving the blessings to.

8. What was the blessing that he intended to give Esau but it was spoken over Jacob now instead?

How does this compare to what God told Rebekah would be the blessing over Jacob, the younger? (Genesis 25:21-23)

When Esau came back to give the meal he had hunted and prepared for his father Isaac, Isaac trembled violently from being decieved by Jacob and giving the blessing to Jacob instead.  He could not take the blessing back.  This was the power of the spoken word in that day.  It was the same as a written covenant bound word. Esau wanted to hear a blessing of some kind from Isaac but when Isaac opened his mouth to speak over him, the words of prophecy that were given by God were not favorable for him.

9. What would his future be like?

10. How did Esau feel toward Jacob from that day on and what did he plan to do to Jacob after the death of their father?

Rebekah got word of Esau's plans toward Jacob and warned him to flee to Haran to her brother Laban's home.  She told him to stay there a few days until Esau's anger subsided.

11. How was Rebekah feeling about life because of the grief Esau had brought to them?

Application:

Genesis 27:34 states that when Esau did not get the blessings but was deceived, he cried out with an exceedingly great and bitter cry.  In Hebrews 12:17, it states that he desired the blessings, but rejected his birthright and found no place for repentance even through his tears. Esau was only sorry to not get the inherited blessings.  His sorrow was not sorrow that is according to the will of God that produces repentance that leads to salvation, but it was the sorrow of the world that produces death.
