Luke Chapter 5 - Assignment

Luke 5:1-11 - The First Disciples 

1. Jesus got Simon Peter to put his boat out from the shore a little and that is how Jesus taught the multitudes who had gathered to listen to Him teach at the lake of Gennesaret.  What did He ask Peter to do when He finished teaching and what was Peter's response?

2.  When Peter obeyed His request, what was the result?  How did this make Peter respond to the Lord?  Do you understand this response?  Have you ever felt this way after God did a miracle work in your life?  Why or why not?

3.  Jesus told Peter not to be afraid.  What would he be doing from that point on?

4.  What 3 disciples are mentioned in this passage that left everything to follow Jesus?

 

Luke 5:12-26 - The Leper and The Paralytic 

1. There was a man full of leprosy.  What did He know Jesus could do if He was willing to do it for him?  How did Jesus respond to that? 

2.  What did Jesus tell the leper to do once he received the healing?

3.  As the crowds heard about Jesus, they gathered all over to hear Him and be healed of their sicknesses.  What would Jesus often do? vs. 16 -

4.  Some men brought a paralyzed man to Jesus for Him to heal him.  They could not get in because of the crowds.  What did they do in order to get their friend recognized and helped by Jesus?

5.  First Jesus told the man his sins were forgiven.  The religious leaders said this was blasphemy for only God could forgive sin.  How did Jesus display that He was God and had authority on earth to forgive sin? 

 

Luke 5:27-39 - Call of Levi (Matthew)

1. Jesus called Levi, a tax collector, to follow Him.  Later, Levi gave a big reception for Him in his house.  The ones that attended were other tax-collectors and sinners that were not orthodox and religious.  The Pharisees and scribes grumbled about this saying to His disciples "Why do you eat and drink with the sinners?".  How did Jesus answer them? vs. 31,32 -

2.  The Pharisees and scribes also said that their disciples and those of John the Baptist all kept the laws of fasting and yet the disciples of Jesus were not fasting.  They wanted to know why not.  How did Jesus explain it to them?

3.  What do you think Jesus is teaching about in regard to the new garment and the old patch? 

4.  What do you think Jesus is teaching about in regard to the new wine and the old wineskin?

Luke 4:1-13 - The Temptation of Jesus

1. Who was Jesus full of when He returned from being baptized by John in the Jordan River?  Where did He lead Jesus?

2.  Who tempted Jesus while He was there and for how long did it last?

3.  How did Jesus defeat His enemy 'each' time a temptation came to Him?  What does this teach us about God's Word when we are being tempted?

4.  When the enemy finished with every temptation, he left Jesus.  When would he return again?

 

Luke 4:14-37 - Jesus Begins His Public Ministry

1.  Who was Jesus full of when He returned to the region of Galilee after being tempted in the wilderness by the devil for 40 days?

2.  When Jesus went to Nazareth where He was brought up, He went to their synagogue as His custom was on the Sabbath day.  The book of Isaiah the prophet was handed to Him and He found the place to read that gave a prophecy of Himself and the favorable year of the Lord that would visit them.  What did He say when He closed the book?

3.  Jesus knew ahead of time how they would react to His claim of being the fulfillment of Scripture.  What did He say about prophets in their own hometowns?  What did He share with them that got them so upset they wanted to destroy Him by throwing Him off of a cliff?

4.  Jesus passed through the crowd and escaped their plan of destruction upon Him.  He went down to another city of Galilee, Capernaum.  They welcomed His teaching and were amazed by it.  What did the demon possessed man say to Him and why did Jesus rebuke the spirits and not allow them to speak any longer?

5.  How did the crowds in Capernaum feel about Jesus?

 

 

Luke 4:38-44 - Many Are Healed

1. Still in Capernaum, Jesus left the synagoge and went to Simon Peter's home.  What was wrong with Simon's mother-in-law and how did Jesus help her?

2.  As the sun was setting, all who had any sick among them were bringing them to Jesus.  He was laying His hands upon them to heal them.  What were demons saying out loud when they were in His presence?  How did He handle them and why did He not allow them to speak about Him?

3.  What did Jesus do when daylight came?  Why did the multitudes search for Him?  What did He tell them?  What was His purpose for being sent?

4.  What is your purpose?  Do you have a purpose driven life like Jesus did?  Why or why not?

Luke 3:1-20 - John the Baptist: Preaches & Is Put In Prison

1. When the Word of God came to John, the son of Zacharias, in the wilderness, he came into all the district around the Jordan.  What was he preaching and how was it a fulfillment of the Old Testament prophecies of Isaiah the prophet?

2.  Certain groups of people were asking John what they should do to prepare for the coming of the Lord.  How would they bear fruit in their repentance?  What would John tell them and what can we learn from this?

3.  John let the people know that He was not the Christ.  What would the Christ do for them that he could not do?  What will Jesus do with the winnowing fork and what does this mean to us?

4.  Why did John the Baptist get locked up in prison by Herod?

 

Luke 3:21-22 - Jesus is Baptized by John the Baptist

What happened as Jesus was praying at His water baptism by John?

What is this showing us about the doctrine of the Trinity? (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit - 3 persons in 1 God)

 

 

Luke 3:23-38 - Genealogy of Jesus through Mary's side -

Although Joseph's name is given which was customary ~ Joseph's side is given in Matthew.  In Joseph's genealogy, the seed comes through David's son Solomon.  In this genealogy through Mary's side, the seed comes through David's son Nathan.  We know that the seed is wholly from God; that Mary was a virgin, so it matters for record, but not for blood. (Amen)

1.  How old was Jesus at His baptism and at the beginning of His public ministry?

2.  Jesus was 'supposedly' the son of Joseph it states.  What are some of the names in this geneology that are recognized?

3.  How far back is this geneology traced?  Who does it all begin with?  How long has God been planning the coming birth on earth of His Son, His Christ, the Messiah?

Luke 2:1-20 - Jesus' Birth in Bethlehem

1. Why were Joseph & Mary in Bethlehem at the time of the birth of Jesus?

( awesome that God prophesied this location in the Old Testament and man's purposes got them there for the fulfillment)

2.  Why was Jesus born in a manger there?

3.  Who were the first to find out about His birth and how did they find out?  What did they do as soon as they heard this?

4.  How did it make Mary feel to hear the things the shepherds told them the angel said to them about the child they had?

 

Luke 2:21-40 - Jesus Presented at the Temple in Jerusalem on the 8th Day.  His parents return to raise Him in Nazareth.

1. Why did Mary & Joseph take Jesus to the temple on the 8th day after his birth?

2.  Who was the man Simeon and what did he reveal to Mary & Joseph?

3.  How did Simeon tell Mary she would eventually feel in regard to the purpose of her beloved Son Jesus?

4.  What do we learn about Anna the prophetess?  What did she speak about regarding the Christ child?

5.  After performing all the Jewish law required of them for the baby Jesus, Mary & Joseph returned to Nazareth to raise Jesus there.  What do we learn about Jesus from this point?

 

 

Luke 2:41-52 - Jesus and His Parents Visit Jerusalem when He is 12 Years of Age.

1. Why did Mary & Joseph go to Jerusalem each year?

2.  When Jesus was a boy of 12 years old, he remained behind to sit in the temple among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions.  He didn't tell his parents he had stayed behind.  When they came looking for Him and found Him 3 days later, what did He tell them?

3.  They did not understand what He meant.  He went down with them back to their hometown of Nazareth.  What did Jesus continue to do as a son to them?  How did this touch the heart of His mother Mary?

4.  What did Jesus continue to increase in?

1. Why did Elizabeth's neighbors and relatives rejoice with her at the birth of John?

3. Because the angel of the Lord told both Zacharias and Elizabeth that the baby would be named John, how did Zacharias get this over to the people even though he was mute and couldn't speak to them?

Zacharias was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied concerning the coming of Jesus the Messiah.
