Observation Questions For
1 Corinthians Chapter 14
1.  After the great emphasis on love in chapter 13, Paul says again for us to "pursue love".  What gift is the one we should earnestly desire in our church meetings? vs. 1
2.  Why is it better to speak words of prophecy (exhortation from God's Word) rather than speaking in tongues in church services where the ungifted may be? vs.2-33
3.  What does prophecy (speaking forth God's Word) do for those attending? vs. 3
4.  When a person speaks in a tongue, Who is he speaking to? vs. 2
5.  What does the gift of tongues do for the person speaking? vs. 4
6.  What does the gift of prophecy do for the entire church? vs. 4
7.  Paul would wish that everyone had the gift of tongues (since he enjoyed having it for himself), but he would rather they prophesy so that the entire church would be edified.  He knew that speaking in a tongue would not help them.  What four areas would be of help to the church body? vs. 6
8.  Paul compares tongues without interpretation and order being like instruments that play out of tune and do not produce a distinct sound.  He said that although all languages have meaning, the person who speaks it does not know the meaning and it doesn't help himself or another in knowing what is being said.  If a person speaks in a tongue, what should he also pray to be able to do? vs.7-13
9.  If a person does pray in a tongue, the spirit prays, but their mind is unfruitful.  Since this is the case, what should they also do besides praying and singing in a tongue as they pray? vs.14-15
10.  Paul says that rather than speak in a tongue in church, it is better to speak only 5 words that people can understand so that there is instruction for them.  If they all speak in tongues and an ungifted man or unbeliever enters their service, what will he think about them? vs.16-23
11.  If the church assembles and the prophetic Word of God is given, what will be the effect on the ungifted or unbeliever when they come in? vs.24-25
12.  Paul gives the summary of a balanced church meeting.  What does he say should be done in an orderly fashion? vs.26-30
13.  Paul says to prophesy "one by one" so that all can learn and be exhorted and that the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets.  In other words, the gifts won't take over without the control of the person; the person remains in control and can be orderly always.  What kind of God do we serve? vs. 31-33
14.  What admonition did Paul give to the women to keep proper order in the church services? vs. 34-38  ... Based on what we have already studied about spiritual gifts, do you think that women do have a proper place to excercise their spiritual gifts such as teaching or prophecy?  Think on these things and share your thoughts on this.
15.  In conclusion, Paul says they must do all things properly and in an orderly manner.  Although Paul has told them to desire earnestly to have the prophetic Word spoken in the church, what command does he give concerning speaking in tongues? vs. 39,40
16.  Some churches allow tongues and some forbid them.  Some abuse the gift saying that everyone needs to speak in them and some ignore the gift and say that it no longer exists today.  Share how this chapter has helped you begin to resolve the balance needed in these subjects today.  (Interesting to open this can up, I know)
17.  Reflect on this lesson and pray.
