John Chapter 6
In John Chapter 6, we read in verse 1: "After these things" (after speaking with the Jews in Jerusalem), Jesus went away to the other side of The Sea of Galilee (or Tiberias). Take a moment and look at a Bible map to trace Him going from Jerusalem to the other side of the Sea of Galilee.
Isn't this why He does the Signs? If they simply follow Him for their own sake to be healed without believing Who He is....and believing in Him...so that their sins are washed away...they are born again....they become followers, disciples of Him and His teachings......they will have a healing only, but no eternal life. Remember the question on your study sheet of Chapter 5, when Jesus told the man after He healed him, "Go and sin no more or something worse will befall you"...Following Jesus is not about what He can do for us, but a partnership of believing in Him, and His power working in us, and by being continually filled with His Spirit, we can walk in a manner worthy of our calling! Our lifestyle shows we belong to His kingdom!
Jesus goes up to a mountain to sit down with His disciples....and this large crowd is gathered.
Why is there such a crowd?
Where did they come from ?
Why are so many gathered at this time? (think of the review of Chapter 5 and what event is near?) ....see John 6:4 - Passover
Jesus speaks with one of His diciples named Philip. Jesus wanted to test him to see if he was spiritually in tune with Who He truly was. He asked him the question: "Where are we going to buy bread so that all these people can eat?" Vs. 6 states that Jesus knew what He was going to do (another Sign will be performed to teach about Himself to these people).......but what was Philip's reply?
vs. 7 -
Another one of Jesus' disciples, Andrew (Simon Peter's brother) spots a young boy who has 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish. What is his comment?
vs. 9 -
Impossible Obstacles
Jesus told them to have the people sit down.
(Every Jewish male was required to come to Jerusalem annually for the Jewish Passover Feast, so many would be in the area when they saw Jesus and followed Him here.....)
Jesus gave thanks and distributed the bread out to all these!
When they were filled, Jesus had His disciples to "Gather up the leftovers!....so that nothing would be lost
There was a basket for each, no doubt so that they could share this "living bread" and "share the Word of God, the Lord Jesus Christ" with the everyone....so that nothing (no one would be lost)......that wanted to eat of the Bread of Life.
Jesus is gone....the crowd has no reason to stay...and the disciples get in a boat to cross the sea over to Capernaum (check your map!).. ..It had already become DARK and Jesus had not yet come back to them.
They were about four miles out from the shore.
THE NEXT DAY.......
When the crowd saw that Jesus and His disciples were gone, what did they do?
Where did they go to seek after Jesus?
What did they ask Him when they found Him? vs. 25 -
Jesus Knew Why They Sought Him:
Yet, Jesus makes a powerful statement we all need to listen to....
"Do not work for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you, for on Him the Father God, has set His seal." (vs.27)
Just as the woman at the well said, "Sir, where can I get this Living Water so that I will never thirst again?"..........
The crowd is asking Him, "What shall we do that we may work the works of God....how would we continue to get bread?
What is His answer to them? vs. 29 -
Even after this miraculous bread event, what do they say to Jesus when He claims to be God? vs. 30 -
They quote the Old Testament to Him.
"Our fathers ate the MANNA in the wilderness; as it is written, 'HE GAVE THEM BREAD OUT OF HEAVEN TO EAT'. Obviously, they would like to see if Jesus can get more bread to feed them with from heaven.
Jesus tells them it is not Moses who has given them bread out of Heaven, but His Father Who gives them The True Bread out of heaven.
Well, just as the woman wanted the living water...they want this living bread!
Another KEY verse we don't want to miss! Jesus answered them:
"I am the Bread of Life; he who comes to Me will not hunger, and he who believes in Me will never thirst." (vs. 35)
There is a truth that Jesus knows. All that the Father gives Him WILL come to Him....... and when they do come, what does He promise? vs. 37 -
Remember John 1:11,12:
"He came to His own, and those who were His own did not receive Him. But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His Name, who were born
l)not of blood....2)nor of the will of the flesh.....3)nor of the will of man....4)but OF GOD."
Back to John 6:
When the fragments of bread were picked up and put into 12 baskets, Jesus said He would lose nothing! We see here, He will lose not one of the children that God gives Him.
What will happen to these on the Last Day?
vs. 39 -
A summary is given in verse 40, another verse we don't want to miss seeing!
"For this is the will of My Father, that everyone who beholds the Son and believes in Him will have eternal life, and I Myself will raise him up on the last day."
The majority of the Jews are having a hard time with this teaching! Look at verse 41,42.
Jesus is confident among the controversy.....simply put He says...in vs.44"No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws Him;and I will raise him up on the last day."
Share the Bread of Life...Tell them they will never hunger or thirst again within their innermost being of emptiness and seeking....Explain to them the Gospel (the Good News that their sins have been paid for on the cross by the sinless Lamb of God - explain He died, He was buried, He rose again, and He will come again....ask them to believe in His Name and they will have eternal life....) If the Father draws them, they will believe. If they don't believe .... rest...that you have done your part...and continue to share His truth with others...remember: the majority won't believe, but some will! Praise God!
Jesus continues to teach them from the Old Testament Scriptures from the prophets. He tells them that if they have truly learned from the Father, they will Come to Him.
If they come, what will he give them? vs. 47 -
How can He do that? vs. 48
What kind of bread is He? vs. 51
When we 'eat' of this bread, what will happen to us? vs. 51 -
What happens when you 'eat' something? It abides 'inside' of you...it becomes a very part of you........
Then the Jews reasoned again, stumbling over 'eating His flesh'....this was not the concept He was teaching, but He goes on to teach the truth of the necessity of completely identifying with Him in His death. How does He explain this in vs.53-58?
So by becoming "flesh" and giving his "flesh" on the cross for us, we must believe He is God and He is the only way we can have eternal life and come to the Father. We must "eat" of Him and "drink" of Him....He must abide in us for us to have eternal life......
Remember the crowd he fed had followed him for more bread and now He taught them what the Sign of the Bread symbolized. Most in the Jewish synagogue of learning just couldn't accept it.
Jesus knew they were struggling with it. He lets them know they will even see Him ascend into heaven..... Here is another statement of His own confidence in God's Words and Callings:
"It is the Spirit Who gives Life; the flesh profits nothing; the words that I have spoken to you are Spirit and are Life." (vs. 63)
This is so similiar to what He told the woman in Samaria....
"The Father seeks those who will worship in Spirit and in Truth."
The difference was:
Many in Samaria believed.....On this occasion with the Jewish people, most have not believed..........Jesus even knew that some of the disciples did not yet believe. He also knew from the beginning who didn't believe, and who it was that would betray Him. Therefore, He repeated the truth that:
"no one can come to Me unless it has been granted him from the Father"
This was not just his 12 disciples that followed Him to their deaths(except for Judas Iscariot that would betray Him).....but all the disciples that were following him to be His students and learn from Him.......
Then Jesus turned to His twelve.
What did He ask them? vs. 67 -
What did Simon Peter say to Jesus? vs.68-
What was Peter's confession in vs.69
Is that your confession today?
Jesus lets them know right off that He knows who will betray Him and that in God's plan, He even chose the one who was a 'devil' in order to be betrayed.....
What has the Lord shown you today?
As your heart is burning and He is speaking these living words to you personally, won't you take the time to share on this page what you want to say?
