As Isaac moved out into the valley of Gerar, he dug the wells of water again that had been dug by his father Abraham, taking the dirt back out of them.  He also gave them the names his father Abraham had given them before.

9. Isaac's servants dug in the valley and found a well of flowing water there!  What did the herdsmen of Gerar do? vs. 20 -

Isaac was willing to make covenant with them.  He made them a feast and they ate and drank together.  In the morning they arose early and exchanged oaths.  Isaac sent them away and they departed from him in peace.

15. What happened on the same day? vs. 32 -

16. Issac and Rebekah's sons were Jacob and Esau.  We saw some things about them yesterday and will read more about them tomorrow.  For now, we hear what Esau had done that brought both Isaac and Rebekah grief in their hearts.  What was it? vs. 34 - 35

• How old was Esau at the time?

Since Esau and Jacob are twins, we know that Jacob is the same age.  Jacob has not married at this time and we will see that come into his life tomorrow in our reading.  40 years of age is the same age that their father Isaac was when he married Rebekah.

Application:  As the herdsmen quarreled over the wells that Isaac's servants dug over who had the right to them, we notice that Isaac's servants just go dig another one.  This happens until finally there comes a time there is no arguing and they enjoy the water from that one in peace.

17. What can we learn from this about those who want to argue their rights to us?  What are we suppose to do as Christians concerning those who make demands of us or take things that rightfully belong to us?  W W J D ?

Ishmael's defiance was no surprise to the Lord.  He knew the direction his heart was going to take him.

It was also prophesied to Abraham from the Lord that he would be blessed with 12 sons that would be princes.

Genesis 25 tells the names of these 12 sons.  List them from vs.13-16

The historical account in Genesis now returns to the covenant line, and introduces the twin sons of Isaac and Rebekah - Jacob & Esau -

11.  How old was Isaac when Rebekah finally conceived and had a seed to continue in the covenant promise from God? vs. 26

Think about it!  Abraham & Sarah had to wait 24 years before Isaac was born to them in their old age from the time God spoke the promise of a seed to them.  Isaac doesn't have a wife until he is 40 years of age and then she is barren and cannot have children just like Sarah his mother was.  It was 20 years before she conceived and had the promised seed!

12. What was Isaac doing during her barren years?  vs. 21 -

13. After Rebekah became pregnant, she had twin boys.  The children were struggling inside her womb.  Who did she seek counsel from?  vs. 22 -

14.  How did the Lord explain the struggle of the two boys in her womb to her? vs. 23 -

• What would each boy represent?

One of these groups would be stronger than the other.

• Which boy would serve the other?

That is very important to remember!  Later when Rebekah helps Jacob to receive the inheritance from Isaac, we must remember she is in partnership with a word from God, not just playing favorites and inciting deceit.  She has heard from God.

15.  Who came out of the womb first?  What did he look like and what was he named? vs. 25 -

16.  What was the other brother doing when he came out of the womb? vs. 26 -

17.  What did each boy do for their occupations as they grew up? vs. 27

Esau -

Jacob -

Issac loved Esau because of his love for the taste of game, but Rebekah loved Jacob.  When Jacob had cooked stew, Esau came in from the field and was famished.  Esau wanted some of the stew.  Jacob asked him to sell him his birthright.  Esau was glad to for the meal.

18.  What did this reveal about Esau's heart toward the inheritance of the covenant of the Lord? vs. 34 -

God chose Jacob to be the heir to the covenant.  He would later call Himself the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.  The custom of that time was to always give the inheritance to the oldest son and yet God had chosen Jacob.

19. Have you realized that many things that are of God are the opposite of how man thinks it should be?

The only reason we believe in God and are part of the inheritance of the saints in Jesus is because God chose us.  It is so awesome to realize that we have been chosen, marked out to be His, by His kind intention and will.  Our faith to believe is a gift from Him and we cannot boast in that either.  It should make us want to fall on our faces and cry "Holy, Holy, Holy" and say "Thank You Jesus"...amen....

1.  Abraham was very old now and God had blessed him in every way.  What was his concern for his son Isaac now that he was of age to marry? vs. 2-4 -

9. Rebekah ran and told her mother's household about these things.  Who went out to meet the man (Abraham's servant) at the spring? vs. 29 -

11.  Rebekah's brother invited the men in for a meal that had been prepared.  The servant could not eat the meal until he laid out before them the entire story of how he was sent, who he came from, why he came, etc.  He told how he prayed and how everything went according to what he had prayed. 

What did Laban, her brother as well as Bethuel, her father, say in regard to these things? vs. 50 - 51 -

12.  What did Abraham's servant do when he heard these things? vs. 52 -

13.  What was given to Rebekah, her brother, and her mother? vs. 53 -

They ate and spent the night there.  When they arose, the servant asked to be sent back to his master.  Rebekah's brother and mother wanted her to stay a little longer, maybe 10 days, but the servant said they needed to go right then.  They asked Rebekah what she wanted to do.

14.  What was Rebekah's willing answer? vs. 58

They sent her away with her nurse with Abraham's servant and his men.  They blessed Rebekah saying:  "May you, our sister, become thousands of ten thousands,and may your descendants possess the gate of those who hate them." (vs. 60) Rebekah left with the servant for the trip back to Abraham.

Rebekah took her veil and covered herself when she knew this was the one she had been brought for.  The servant told Isaac everything that had happened and why he had brought her to him this way.

This would be really hard to be a stranger and a sojourner and need a place to bury our loved one.

On this earth, Abraham was dwelling in tents, the most temporary of dwellings.  It was clear that this temporary life was not his home.

What was Abraham looking forward to?

Hebrews 11:9-10 -

 

4.  How did these people answer Abraham? vs. 5- 6 -

5.  Where did Abraham desire to bury his wife Sarah? vs. 7-9

Ephron was willing to give Abraham the site, but Abraham did not want it given to him.  He wanted to purchase it and have it deeded over to him.

6.  How much did Abraham pay for the burial site?  vs. 16 -

So, Ephron's field, which was in Machpelah, which faced Mamre, the field and the cave which was in it, and all the trees which were in the field, that were within all the confines of its border, were deeded over to Abraham for a possession in the presence of the sons of Heth, before all who went in at the gate of his city.

7.  After getting a deed to the land, what did Abraham do? vs. 19 -

Note:  Though inaccessible today, the tombs of several patriarchs and their wives - are, according to tradition, located in a large cave deep beneath the Mosque of Abraham, a Muslim shrine in Hebron. Those who are noted as being there are:  Abraham & Sarah; Isaac & Rebekah; Jacob & Leah.

The Bible says that

Sarah, Abraham, Isaac, Rebekah, Leah and Jacob were buried in Hebron, in a cave called the Cave of Machpelah, purchased by Abraham (Gen. 23).

Traditionally, this cave has been located below the Haram el-Khalil ("sacred precinct of the friend of the merciful One, God") in Hebron, today a Muslim mosque. References as early as the Hellenistic period (2nd century B.C.) testify that this is the authentic location of the burial place of the Patriarchs. The cave was explored by the Augustine Canons in 1119, at which time they claim to have found the bones of the Patriarchs.

Genesis Chapter 22

1.  What did God do in regard to Abraham's faith? vs. 1 -

Note:  God tests our faith to show us His faithfulness. (amen) He does not tempt us.  The enemy tempts us to make us fall in order to accuse and condemn us.

 

Comment on these verses:

• Revelation 12:10 -
• Revelation 12:11 -

What a difference.  The enemy is before God's throne throwing accusations about us from the temptations he has sent to us and we have fallen.  But the Lord says we overcome him by the blood of the Lamb!  Praise God!  So, realize when God brings a test (a trial) to our lives, He already knows that our faith in Christ overcomes.  It is to show us His faithfulness and His character in keeping us and using all things to conform us to His Son's image.

2.  How does the Bible explain testing vs. being tempted?

• James 1:2-4 -

• James 1:13-15 -

3.  How did God test Abraham's faith in Him?  What did He ask Abraham to do? vs. 2 -

Can you imagine the thoughts that must have raced through Abraham's mind?  He waited 24 years from the first time God made the promise of this son (seed) in Isaac.  He had driven Ishmael, his older son through Hagar, out from his sight with a broken heart, to honor Sarah and God's command to listen to her....and now Isaac, his only son of the promise was a young teen by now, almost grown into manhood.  Why would God give him to ask for him back in this way?

4.  Yet, how did Abraham respond to the command? vs. 3 -

5.  On the 3rd day of the journey as they got to the land of Moriah, Abraham raised his eyes and he 'saw' the place from a distance.

What do you think he might have 'seen' with God's help according to these words of Jesus in John 8? John 8:48-58 - A good reason to believe that this very well might have been what Abraham saw at that time is what he said to the servants when he and Isaac went up to the mount.

6.  What does Abraham tell the servants? vs. 5 -

7.  According to Hebrews 11:17-19 - What did Abraham believe at that time by 'faith' in God's character to keep His Word (covenant) ? -

 

Read Hebrews 11:17-19 again and answer this question: When Abraham received Isaac back, what was this a picture of? vs. 19 - So, he is going to obey God even though it seems a very strange and hard thing to go through.

In the original Hebrew language, he has used the name of God: Jehovah Jireh .......... God will provide(some translations from the original language say God will provide Himself)

10.  Abraham continued in obedience with the knife held up to slay his only son.  At that time, what did the Angel of the Lord say to Abraham? vs. 11-12 -

11.  Then Abraham raised his eyes and looked, and behold, behind him a ram caught in the thicket of his horns; and Abraham went and took the ram and offered him up 'in the place of' his son.

Who was offered up 'in our place'?

Mark 10:45 -

13.  What did Abraham name the place and what does that mean? (see note above on number 9 question)......

 

as it is said to this day...."In the mount of the Lord it will be provided..." Note:  The author of Chronicles identifies the area as the temple mount in Jerusalem (2 Chronicles 3:1).  Today "Mount Moriah" is occupied by the Dome of the Rock, an impressive Muslim structure erected in A.D. 691.  A large outcropping of rock inside the building is still pointed to as the traditional site of the intended sacrifice of Isaac.  This was the same mountain range that Jesus was crucified on.  Yes...."in the mount of the Lord it was provided for us."  Isn't this all so exciting???

Then, the angel of the Lord called to Abraham a second time from heaven. 

14.  What was confirmed to Abraham again from the Lord? vs. 16-18

15. In Abraham's 'seed' all the nations of the earth would be blessed because of Abraham's obedience to his faith in God.

Who is the 'seed' referring to?

Galatians 3:16 -

Abraham returned to his young men and they arose and went together to Beersheba and Abraham lived there.

19. Thinking of the test of Abraham's faith and remembering that is is God's way to show His faithfulness to us as we endure those times of testing .... can you think of something that is 'testing' your faith today?  Are you going through a 'trial' or 'testing'?
