Matthew Worksheet - Chapter 28

Matthew Chapter 28

Yesterday, we were left with our Lord breathing His last on Calvary's cross for us.  We saw the disciples full of fear and scattered.  Jesus had told them He would raise from the grave on the 3rd day.  They really didn't understand...

Jesus Is Risen!

1.  A few days later, Mary Magdalene and Mary, the mother of James, came to look at Jesus' grave.

What had happened? vs. 2

1)          2)          3)          4)

2.  What was the appearance of this angel like? vs. 3 -

3.  How did the Romans guards react? vs. 4 -

4.  The angel told the women to not fear.  Jesus had risen as He said He would!  The angel told them to go quickly and tell His disciples that they would see Him in Galilee.  How did the women respond? vs. 8 -

5.  As they were going, Jesus met them and greeted them!  Can you even begin to imagine?  What did they do when they recognized Him? vs. 9 -

6.  What were His Words to the women? vs. 10 -

7.  While they were on their way to tell the disciples the good news, the guard came into the city and reported to the chief priests all that had happened.  How did the religious leaders handle His resurrection to keep the people from believing it? vs. 11-15 -

The Great Commission

The eleven disciples (minus Judas who betrayed him and has now killed himself) .. proceeded to Galilee, to the mountain that Jesus had designated.  When they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some were doubtful.

Matthew Worksheet - Chapter 27

Matthew Chapter 27

We have seen Jesus be betrayed by Judas in Chapter 26 and Peter, his faithful follower, has denied knowing Him three times.  He is left alone to face the cruelty of the trials and finally His death.

Judas' Remorse

1.  When morning came, the chief priests & elders bound Jesus.  Where did they take Him to? vs. 2 -

2.  What did Judas do when he saw that Jesus had been condemned to die? vs. 3-5 -

3.  What did the chief priests do with the pieces of silver that Judas no longer wanted?  vs. 6-8 -

4.  What prophecy did this fulfill from the Old Testament? vs. 9-10 -

Jesus Before Pilate

5.  Pilate asked Jesus:  "Are you the King of the Jews?"  How did Jesus answer him? vs. 11 -

6.  What did Jesus do as the chief priests and elders were accusing Him? vs. 12-14 -

At the feast of the Passover, it was a custom for the governor to release one prisoner to the choice of the people.  They were holding at that time a notorious prisoner called Barabbas.  Pilate asked them who they wanted to have released; Barabbas or Jesus the Christ?...He knew that Jesus had been delivered up because of envy. (vs. 18)

7.  What did Herod's wife say to him? vs. 19 -

8.  The chief priests and elders persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas to be released and for Jesus to be put to death.  Pilate asked what he should do with Jesus?  What did the crowd answer him? vs. 22 -

Pilate said that He had not done any evil that He should die for.  The crowd shouted all the more "Crucify Him!".  Pilate took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd saying that he was innocent of His blood.  He had Jesus scourged and handed Him over to them to be crucified.

9.   What did the Jewish crowd yell out about the blood of the Lord? vs. 25 -

Jesus Is Mocked

Jesus had already been scourged and if any saw The Passion movie, you got a good view of how brutal the scourging was.  They were allowed to give 39 slashes and the cat of 9 tails they used had bits of glass and bone in it with meat hooks that literally shredded the flesh and exposed the inner organs many times.  There are verses in the Old Testament that describe in detail much of the suffering the Lord would undergo through His brutal death.

10.  After this scourging, the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole Roman cohort around Him.  List the 'humiliating' things they did to Him in front of this audience:

  •  vs. 28 -
  •  vs. 28 -
  •  vs. 29 -
  •  vs. 29 -
  •  vs. 29 -
  •  vs. 30 -
  •  vs. 30 -
  •  vs. 31 -

11.  Who did they get to bear Jesus' cross for Him? (vs. 32) -

The Crucifixion

12.  Where did the crucifixion take place? vs. 33 -

13.  After placing Jesus on the cross, what else did they do to Him?

  • vs. 34 -
  • vs. 35 -
  • vs. 37 -
  • vs. 39-44 -

14.  Who did Jesus die with? vs. 38 -

15.  From noon until 3:00 p.m. - darkness fell upon all the land.  Around 3:00 in the afternoon after 3 hours of darkness, Jesus cried out with a loud voice.  What was He saying? vs. 46 -

16.  Jesus cried out again and then He died.  At the moment of His death, what tremendous things took place?

  • vs. 51 -
  • vs. 51 -
  • vs. 51 -
  • vs. 52 -
  • vs. 53 -

17.  When these things happened, what did it cause the Roman centurion and those guarding the Lord's body to do? vs. 54 -

18.  There were many women who were looking on from a distance.  Who are the ones named here that witnessed these things? vs. 56 -

1)         2)          3)

Jesus Is Buried

19.  What do we know about the man who prepared Jesus' tomb and His body for burial? vs. 57 - 60

  • His Name:
  • From:
  • Financial Position:
  • His Commitment to Jesus: (vs. 57)

The chief priests and the Pharisees warned Pilate that Jesus had said He would raise from the dead on the third day ... so they did all they could to make sure the grave was secure and guarded so that no one could steal the body and claim that His statement was true.

We know that no one will steal the body, but we also know He will truly do as He said He would!  He will raise from the dead on the third day!  We will read about that tomorrow in chapter 28.

Application:

When Jesus died, the veil in the temple that separated the high priest who was in the presence of God from the people... was ripped ... from top to bottom ... God Himself ripped that curtain that was made out of materials no man could ever rip.

20.  Read the following verses and comment on what this means for us as believers:

  • Hebrews 9:1-14 -
  • Hebrews 10:14-22 -

22.  Jesus went away yet a 3rd time and prayed the same things fervently to the Father.  What did He say to His disciples when He came again and found them still sleeping? vs. 45-46 -

Jesus' Betrayal and Arrest

While Jesus was still speaking, Judas, one of His twelve that had followed Him and witnessed His life and miracles for 3 years, came up with a great multitude carrying swords and spears.

Matthew Worksheet - Chapter 25

Matthew Chapter 25

Parable of Ten Virgins

Jesus went on to explain His coming with the parable of the 10 virgins.  Read vs. 1-13.

1.  Why were the five foolish? vs.3,8,11,12 -

2.  Why were the five prudent or wise? vs. 4,7,9,10 -

Realize that while the bridegroom was delaying, they 'all' got drowsy and began to sleep, but when the shout came at midnight, the prudent were prepared to meet Him!

Parable of the Talents

Jesus followed this with the parable of the talents.  This is about a man that went on a journey and entrusted his own slaves with his possessions.  He gave them different amounts according to their own ability.  (The Lord knows exactly waht each of us can handle and are equipped to do)

  • One was given 5 talents to invest.  He made 5 more for the master!
  • One was given 2 talents to invest.  He made 2 more for the master!

Although they were given different amounts of stewardship to begin with, they both gave 100% of what they had into his kingdom.  We are accountable for what we have personally been entrusted with, not to compare ourselves with others.

  • One was given 1 talent to invest.  He decided not to receive it or invest it, but to hide it.  After a long time, the man returned to settle accounts with them.

3.  What did he say to the ones who had used their talents and had made more for their master? vs. 21,23 -

4.  What did he say to the one who was afraid to use his small amount and hid it? vs. 26-28 -

Note:  It was obvious from his statement to his master that he didn't trust him to do the right thing. (vs.24-25).  Each person is given the offer of eternal life and that offer holds within it at least one gift to use in the body of Christ for His glory and for the care of the body.  If a person refuses that one thing, he has forfeited everything.  When a person is afraid and ashamed of even the one thing offered, they are saying they cannot trust God to take care of them.  He is not worth the investment and the risk.

  • Matthew 25:29 - "For to everyone who has, more shall be given, and he will have an abundance; but from the one who does not have, even what he does have shall be taken away."

When we receive the gift of eternal life and we invest our time, talents, possessions back into the master's work - we are given more grace to use for the serving and blessing upon blessing ... but if we don't even receive and use that gift, but hide it in shame, pushing down the calling and ignoring the draw of His Spirit to us...we will even lose that opportunity to enter into His kingdom one day.

Oh how I pray that no one reading this will be ashamed to confess Jesus as Lord and to live for Him, investing all that He has blessed you with back into His service.  We will hear "Well done" and we will enter the joy of our master!  The Joy in serving!

5.  What does the Lord do for us when we are faithful in the few things? vs. 21,23 -

The Judgment

After these parables, Jesus went on to tell them of the judgment that will take place when He returns.  Most scholars believe this is a judgment of how people of all the nations treated the Jewish race.  Jesus says "these brothers of mine".  It could also be interpreted how we treat one another in the body of Christ as well.

6.  Who will be gathered before His throne? vs. 31 -

7.  How will He separate the people? vs. 32,33 -

  • Jesus will give those on His right (the righteous) their 'inheritance' that has been prepared for them since the foundation of the world!  (wow!)

8. List below the areas that Jesus will reward in and realize that each time it is done to the 'least of His brethren' (Jewish or Christian), it is done for Him.  Amen.

  • vs. 35 -
  • vs. 35 -
  • vs. 35 -
  • vs. 35 -
  • vs. 35 -
  • vs. 35 -

Jesus will accuse the unrighteous of NEGLECTING to do these very same things.  When they did not do it for the least of His brethren (Jewish or Christian), they did not do it for Him.

9. What will happen to the unrighteous who do not know Him and therefore have not shown love for His brethren?  vs. 46 -

10. What will happen to the righteous who do know Him and because of the love He has shown them, they have shown that love to His brethren? vs. 46 -

Application:

11. Loving The Brethren - Comment on these verses

  • James 2:15-17 -
  • 1 Peter 4:7-11 - (comment on how our gifts are invested from our love for one another) -
  • 1 John 4:7-11 -
  • 1 John 4:19-21 -

Matthew Worksheet - Chapter 24

Matthew Chapter 24

This entire chapter deals with Christ's return to earth.  He gave His disciples a 'private talk' concerning these things.

I hope I can set the context up for you to help it be understood better.

In verse 1-3, Jesus had just come out of the temple in Jerusalem.  The disciples who were Jews had just pointed out the temple buildings to Him.

He has just told them that there would not be one stone left, but all would be torn down.  We know historically that happened after Jesus resurrected in 70 A.D.

So it is a Jewish setting and Jesus is speaking to the Jewish people (His disciples).  It is important to see how the nation of Israel is placed in end-time prophecy and it will help you in your interpretation skills so much.

1.  List below the signs that Jesus gave to this Jewish listening audience (His disciples):

  • vs. 5 -
  • vs. 6,7 -
  • vs. 7 - pt.2 -

2.  All these, He said, are merely the beginning of birth pangs.  Then...what will happen?

  • vs. 9 -
  • vs. 9 -
  • vs. 9 -
  • vs. 10 -
  • vs. 10 -
  • vs. 11 -
  • vs. 12 -
  • vs. 14 -

3.  Who will be saved through all of this? vs. 13 -

Okay, a quick little lesson from my years of prophecic study of the books of Daniel, Revelation, 2 Thessalonians and all the cross references of the prophets of the Old Testament....

When you make the drawings and you look at all of it, you see that Israel will be hated by all and many will be killed.  There will be a remnant that escapes to the mountains when the AntiChrist comes into the rebuilt temple they will be worshipping in - when he comes in to say he is God and demands their worship - they are to flee to the mountains where God has a place prepared for them.  This helps to understand why they are not to return to the house to get their cloak, etc. but to leave in haste.  It also explains why Jesus says to pray it will not be on a Sabbath or in the winter.  They will be traveling on foot and exposed to the weather.

According to Daniel and Revelation, the Lord will take care of them for 3 and 1/2 years and they will be kept from the terror of the AntiChrist.  This is the remnant that will see Him when He comes with the clouds at the end of that time.  They are the ones that I believe will be saved because they endured to the end.  That is my belief and I don't personally think it speaks of losing our salvation.  I believe that the church will have already been caught up in the clouds before this time and that we will be returning with Him when He comes to the mount and to reign on the earth for 1000 years.  I know that is a lot to read and take in and of course, I will be glad to give supporting Scriptures for all that I share.

4.  Take time to read Daniel 12 which will help you understand the Abomination of Desolation that Jesus is talking about.

Daniel 12 Notes

  • Who stands guard over the sons of Daniel's people?  Who would Daniel's people be? vs. 1 -
  • What kind of distress will happen to the nation that Daniel belongs to at that time? vs. 1 -
  • Who will be rescued? vs. 1 -
  • What will happen to those who died in faith at that time?  What will happen to the people that were not believers? vs. 2 -
  • At the time all of this happens, who will shine bright and lead others to righteousness? vs. 3 -
  • Would Daniel ever see these things fulfilled in his own lifetime?  vs. 13 -
  • What was Daniel to do with the words that had been given him at that time? vs. 4 -

Daniel saw the angelic figures on the bank of the river and he asked them how long it would be until the end of this dreadful time on his people?

  • What was the answer given? vs. 7 -

Daniel heard the words and wrote them down for us today, but at that time he could not understand at all.

  • What was he told? vs. 9-10 -
  • How many days would the distress happen from the time the Abomination of Desolation is set up? vs. 11 -

If you do the math, that is 3 and 1/2 years of time.

We can watch the nation of Israel and know the signs are here and coming faster all the time.  They have been in the news every day for the last couple of years.  Now, the country of Iran is threatening their existence and we see the nations of the world getting involved in this.  It is all around God's nation, Israel, who we are learning about in Genesis is Jacob, son of Isaac, son of Abraham.

It won't be long.  I pray we are ready to be caught up in the air and forever be with the Lord.

5.  Let's end on a positive note!

Matthew Chapter 23

Pharisaism Exposed

Jesus spoke to the multitudes and His disciples about the scribes and the Pharisees.

Because they taught the law of Moses - Jesus said do and observe all that they said - But, He told them not to follow their deeds because they said things they did not do themselves.

  • They gave jobs to men to do that they were unwilling to do themselves.
  • They did all their deeds to be noticed by men.
  • They loved their high positions.

We are not suppose to look to others that are fathers, teachers, and leaders in a superior way.  We have One God, our Father.  They are gifted to teach or to lead but they are to serve others in that gift and not exalt themselves above others.  It doesn't mean we can't acknowledge their gift or even esteem them highly for their service to the Lord, but it does mean they are not to be elevated above others.

1.  What will happen to those who exalt themselves above others? vs. 12 -

2.  What will happen to those who are humble and serve others? vs. 12 -

Eight Woes

3.  Jesus gave eight strong woes to the scribes and the Pharisees because of their hypocrisy in verses 13 - 36 of Matthew 23.  Read through these verses again and summarize in one sentence what Jesus spoke against.

  • verse 13 -
  • verse 14 -
  • verse 15 -
  • verse 16-22 -
  • verse 23-24 -
  • verse 25-26 -
  • verse 27-28 -
  • verse 29-31

Jesus told them to fill up the measure of the guilt of their fathers.

4.  What did Jesus call them and where did He indicate they would be going? vs. 33 -

5.  Jesus would send His servants to them.  What did He know they would do to them? vs. 34 -

6.  When they did these things to those Jesus would send to them, whose blood would they also be guilty of? vs. 35-36 -

Lament over Jerusalem

Jesus cried out for the city of Jerusalem who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her.

7.  What had He longed to do for them so many times?  vs. 37 -

8.  Why didn't He do it? vs. 37 -

Now, their house (temple) would be left to them desolate.

We know that the Romans destroyed the temple in Jerusalem after the Lord's death in 70 A.D.

9.  When will they see Him again? vs. 39 -

10. Read these prophetic words of when the nation of Israel will look upon Jesus again and what that time will be like for that nation.

  • Zechariah 12:10-11 -
  • Romans 11:25-27 -

Matthew Worksheet - Chapter 22

Matthew Chapter 22

Parable of the Marriage Feast

Jesus gives another parable to the Jewish leaders.  He has just finished the parable of the landowner explaining that the vineyard would be given to a people who would bear the fruit of it.

This parable is also speaking of those who were invited first (the Jews indicated), but they had reasons they did not want to follow Him.  The Gospel that went out to all the Gentiles that were willing to follow Him.  See the highlighted note section below on the lesson before this one from Acts 13 and it will help you understand this even more.

1.  Where were they to go to invite those to come? vs. 8 - 9

2.  Who all were gathered to come? vs. 10

3.  What happened to the guest that came without being properly clothed (obviously not a true believer in Jesus)? vs. 11-13

Many are called, but few are chosen.  In other words, God calls the entire world to follow Him, but few choose the narrow path that leads them to eternal life.

Tribute to Caesar

4.  What were the Pharisees plotting to do together? vs. 15 -

They sent their disciples to Him to ask Him if it was lawful to pay taxes to Caesar.

5.  What did Jesus perceive about them? vs. 18 -

He asked them to show Him the coin used for the poll-tax.  He asked them who the picture on the coin was and the inscription on it?  They told him it was of Caesar.

6.  What did Jesus tell them? vs. 21

Jesus Answers the Sadducees

7.  On the same day, some Sadducees came to question Jesus also.  What do the Sadducees believe? vs. 1 -

( ... *this makes them "Sad...u...see?")

The Sadducees asked Him who a woman would be married to in heaven if she had been married to all seven brothers on earth, with each one leaving her to the next one.  From the answer that Jesus gives them, we learn that there will be no marriages in heaven, but we will all be like the angels.

8.  Then the Pharisees came to test Him again.  They asked Him to tell them the greatest commandment.  Jesus gave them two commandments that He said the whole law and the prophets depend on.  Write them out below:

  • (1) vs. 37 -
  • (2) vs. 39 -

9.  While the Pharisees were there with Him, what did He ask of them? vs. 42 -

10. How did they answer Him? vs. 42 -

Jesus asks them how can Christ be David's son and the Lord that David speaks of in the Psalm as well?  It stumped them and we are told they did not dare ask Him another question from that day on.

Application:

11. If we are to love the Lord like this, write out how you think each could be done?

  • With all your heart:
  • With all your soul:
  • With all your mind:
  • Your neighbor as yourself:

1. Jesus and His disciples approached Jerusalem and went to Bethpage to the Mount of Olives.  What did Jesus send two of HIs disciples to do? vs. 2-3 -

2. What prophecy did this fulfill? vs. 4-5-

The disciples did as He instructed, bringing the donkey and the colt.  They laid their coats upon them and He sat on the coats.

3. As Jesus rode the donkey through the streets, what was most of the multitude doing? vs. 8-11 -

Cleansing the Temple

4. Jesus entered the temple in Jerusalem and saw that it had become a marketplace.  What did He do? vs. 12 -

1)               2)

5. What did Jesus say to the moneychangers? vs. 13 -

6. The blind and lame came to Jesus in the temple and He healed them.  When the cheif priests and scribes saw the wonderful things He had done and how the children shouted "Hosanna to the Son of David" - what did they do? vs. 15 -

7. When they spoke to Jesus about it, Jesus referred them to an Old Testament prophecy from the psalms.  What did He say to them? vs. 16 -

Jesus left them after this and went out of the city of Jerusalem to Bethany and the spent the night there.

The Barren Fig Tree

8. The next morning, Jesus was hungry.  He came to a fig tree that had no fruit.  He cursed it and it withered!  The disciples marveled that this tree obeyed Jesus.  What did Jesus tell them? vs. 21-22 -

Authority Challenged

As Jesus taught in the temple, the cheif priests and elders questioned His authority.  He threw a question to them concerning the baptism of John, whether it was from heaven or from men?  They did not answer him...so He did not give them an answer either.

Parable of Two Sons

Jesus taught in Parables.  He told them of a man with two sons.  He asked the first one to work in the vineyard.  He said "I will"...but then he didn't go.

He asked the second one.  He said "I will not"...but afterward regretted it and went.  Then He asked the chief priests and elders:  "Which son did the will of his father?"  They said: "The second son."

9. What did Jesus tell them concerning this? vs. 31-32 -

Parable of the Landowner

Jesus went on to another parable about a landowner who planted a vineyard.  At harvest time, he sent his slaves to receive the produce.

The vine-growers in the vineyard beat one slave, killed one slave, and stoned a slave.  He sent more slaves and they did the same to them.

10. Then...he sent his son thinking they would respect him.  What did they do to his son? vs. 39 -

11. Jesus asked them: "What will the owner do to those vine-growers who killed his son?"  ... How did they answer this? vs. 40-41 -

Jesus referred them to the Scriptures in the Old Testament that said:

"The stone which the builders rejected, this has become the chief corner stone; this came about from the Lord, and it is marvelous in our eyes'

12. What would be taken away from the Jews who would reject Jesus as their Messiah and kill Him? vs. 43 -

It would be given to a people that would produce fruit.  (vs. 44)

13. What did the chief priests and Pharisees understand when they heard the parables Jesus spoke? vs. 45 -

14. They sought to size Jesus, but didn't at this time yet.  What did they fear and why? vs. 46 -

We know that Jesus was speaking of the fact that slaves (prophets) of Old were sent to Israel and they were killed as He told in the parables.  We also know that when God sent His Son to them, they would kill Him.

The parable spoke of how the landowner would give the vineyard over to a people that would produce the fruit of it.

Read Paul's encounter in Jerusalem before turning to the Gentiles with the Gospel.  It is an awesome review of the nation of Israel and how the Gentiles (the rest of the world) came into the church and the blessings of Abraham!

Read Acts 13:15-52, making notes of the main points.....

  • Where did God lead the Jews out of? vs. 17 -
  • How long did God put up with them in the wilderness? vs. 18 -
  • After destroying seven nations in the land of Canaan, He distributed their land as an inheritance.  How long did this take? vs. 19 -
  • After these things, God gave them judges until Samuel the prophet.  The people wanted a king like the other nations.  God gave them Saul for 40 years.  After He removed Saul, who did God raise up to be their king? vs. 22 -
  • What did God say about him? vs. 22 -
  • From the offspring of King David, according to the promise, what did God bring to the nation of Israel? vs. 23 -
  • John the Baptist had proclaimed His coming.  Who was the baptism of repentance preached to? vs. 24 -

John continued to point them to the One coming who was Jesus.  Paul reminds them all - it was to 'us' (the Jews) that the word of this salvation was sent out.

  • What did the rulers and citizens of Jerusalem not recognize from the Scriptures that were read every Sabbath and therefore, what did they do to actually fulfill the Scriptures? vs. 27 -
  • Even though there was no grounds to put Jesus to death, they asked Pilate that He be executed.  What were they carrying out? vs. 29 -
  • They nailed Him to the cross and laid Him in a tomb.  What did God do? vs. 30 -
  • Who did Jesus appear to after He was resurrected for many days?  vs. 31 -
  • What was the message these apostles could now boldly preach to the Jewish people? vs. 32-37 -
  • What was the Gospel that Paul was offering to these Jews? vs. 38-39 -
  • What did they warn them to take heed not to do? vs. 40-41 -

As Paul & Barnabas were going out, the people were hungry to know more.  They begged them to speak on these things on the next Sabbath as well.  When the meeting broke up, many of the Jews and the God-fearing proselytes followed Paul & Barnabas.

  • What were the men urging these to do? vs. 43 -

On the next Sabbath, they returned and nearly the entire city was assembled to hear the Word of God!

  • What did the Jewish leaders feel when they saw the crowds that came to hear the message? vs. 45 -
  • What did they begin to do? vs. 45
  • At that point, what did Paul & Barnabas say boldly to the Jews?

Type out verse 46 -

  • What did the Lord command them to do at this point according to prophecy? vs. 47 -
  • How did the Gentiles feel about this when they heard this? vs. 48
  • Who believed the Gospel? vs. 48

The word of the Lord spread through the whole region.

  • What did the Jews do then? vs. 50 -
  • What did Paul & Barnabas do? vs. 51 -
  • What did the disciples of Jesus continually experience in the midst of all this persecution? vs. 52 -
