Luke 24:1-12 - The Resurrection

The women who had come with Jesus out of Galilee had follwed after His resurrection to see where He was buried.  They returned to prepare spices and perfumes for Him and then they rested on the Sabbath according to the commandment.

On the first day of the week, which would have been the next day being Sunday, they came to the tomb Jesus had been laid in bringing the spices they had prepared.

  • What had happened to the stone that covered the opening of the tomb? vs. 2 -

When they walked inside the tomb, which was like a carved out cave area, they did not find the body of Jesus there.

  • While they were wondering about this, who appeared before them? vs. 4 -
  • How did the women react to this? vs. 5 -
  • What did the men ask the women? vs. 5 -
  • What did the men then tell the women about Jesus? vs. 6-7 -

At this announcement, the women remembered how Jesus had told them these very words before.  They left to report all of these things to the eleven disciples and to all the rest.

  • Who were the women that first got the news of the resurrected Christ? vs. 10 -
    • 1)
    • 2)
    • 3)
    • ..... and also the other women with them.
  • How did the apostles receive the news they told them? vs. 11 -
  • According to verse 12, who ran to the tomb to look in and check it all out?
    • What did he find when he looked inside?

Luke 24:13-35 - The Road to Emmaus

Two of His disciples were going that very day to a village named Emmaus, which was about seven miles from Jerusalem.  They were talking about all the things that had happened.

  • While they were talking, Who came and started walking with them? vs. 15 -

At first, their eyes were preventing from recognizing Him.  He asked them "What are these words that you are exchanging with one another as you are walking?"  They stood still, looking sad.

One of them, named Cleopas, answered and said to Him, "You are the only one visiting Jerusalem and unaware of the things which have happened here in these days?"  And He said "What things?"

They went on to tell Him that Jesus the Nazarene, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word in the sight of God and the people, had been delivered up by the chief priests and rulers and crucified.  What were they hoping for? vs. 21 -

Although it had been three days since it had all happened, they said that some women had amazed them saying that they were at the tomb early in the morning and saw a vision of angels who said that He was alive.  Some of the disciples went to the tomb and found it just like the women said, but they did not see Him (Jesus).

  • What did Jesus say to them at this point? vs. 25,26 -

Jesus began with the teachings of Moses (which are found in our Bible books of Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and  Deuteronomy) and with all the prophets (those we have in our Bibles such as Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Daniel, etc....), and He explained to them the things concerning Himself in all the Scriptures.  (WOW..!!)

When they approached the village where they were going, He acted like He would go on farther, but they begged Him to stay with them.  After He came in to stay with them and they were reclined at the table for a meal, He took the bread and blessed it and broke it, and began to give it to them.

  • What happened at that time to these men? vs. 31 -
  • What happened to Jesus at that same time? vs. 31 -
  • What did the men say to one another? vs. 32

They arose that very hour and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together and others with them.  They heard them saying, "The Lord has really risen, and has appeared to Simon."

Then they began to relate their experiences on the road to Emmaus and how He was recognized by them in the breaking of the bread.

Luke 24:36-49 - Other Appearances

While they were telling one another these things, Jesus Himself stood in their midst.

  • What did they think they were seeing? vs. 37 -
  • What did Jesus show them to show that it was Him and not what they thought? vs. 38-39 -

Jesus had flesh and bones in His resurrected state.  He showed them that the scars were still in His hands and His feet from the nails on the cross.  He will bear those scars for all eternity.  Praise His Holy Name.

They were marveling and so full of joy.  Then He asked them for something to eat.  They gave Him a piece of a broiled fish.  He took it and ate it before them.  He will dine with us for all of eternity as well.  Praise His Holy Name.

While Jesus had been with them for three years, He taught them the things that would happen to Him that were written in these places:

  • 1) The Law of Moses
  • 2) The Prophets and
  • 3) The Psalms

At this time,

  • what did He do to their understanding of the things they had been taught? vs. 45 -
  • What had been written about Jesus in the law of Moses, the Prophets, and the Psalms? vs. 46-48 -
  • How does this confirm to your heart how important it is to read the Old Testament as well as the New Testament?
  • Do you pray that the Lord will give you understanding when You read?  Just like He opened their minds to understand, He will do the same for us.

Jesus told His own disciples that they were "witnesses" of these things.

  • What will Jesus be sending forth upon them? vs. 49 -
  • What will they be clothed with when this comes to them? vs. 49
  • What do you think that means?  Write your thoughts.

Luke 24:50-53 - The Ascension

After this, Jesus led His disciples out as far as Bethany, and He lifted up His hands and He blessed them.

What happened while He was blessing them? vs. 51 -

When the disciples returned to Jerusalem to wait to be clothed with power on high, how did they feel and what were they doing continually? vs. 52,53 -

  • Have you been clothed with power from on high?
  • Are you His witness ?
  • Do you have great joy?
  • Are you in a state of continual praise and worship for Who He is and all that He has done?
  • Why or why not?

Luke 23:1-7 - Jesus before Pilate

The whole body of the Sanhedrin brought Jesus before Pilate and began to accuse Him, saying, "We found this man misleading our nation and forbidding to pay taxes to Caesar, and saying that He Himself is Christ, a King."

  • According to Luke 20:19-25, did Jesus forbid them to pay taxes to Caesar?  What did He tell them when they tried to trap Him in this?
  • Also, write out the facts when Jesus helped Peter find a way to pay his taxes and His own from Matthew 17:24-27 -
  • What did the apostle Paul teach the Romans about paying taxes? Romans 13:6,7 -

These men were falsely accusing Jesus of something that was not true at all.  Although others called Him the Christ, the King, He did not use that Name of Himself, but usually referred to Himself as the Son of Man.  Anyway, these were the charges they had against Him.  Pilate asked Him point blank "Are You the King of the Jews?" and Jesus answered "It is as you say."

  • What did Pilate say to the chief priests and those who had brought Jesus to him? vs. 4 -

They kept insisting, saying, "He stirs up the people, teaching all over Judea, starting from Galilee, even as far as this place."  When Pilate heard this statement, he asked if Jesus was from Galilee.  When he learned that He belonged to Herod's jurisdiction, he sent Him to Herod, who was also in Jerusalem at the time.

Luke 23:8-12 - Jesus before Herod

  • Why was Herod so very glad to see Jesus? vs. 8 -

He questioned Jesus at length, but Jesus did not answer Him anything even though the chief priests and scribes were standing beside Him accusing Him vehemently.

  • What was prophesied about Jesus concerning Him not saying a word? Isaiah 53:7 -
  • What did Herod and his soldiers do to Jesus?
    • vs. 11 - treated Him with:__________
    • vs. 11 - _______ Him.
    • vs. 11 - dressed Him in a ________ _______.
    • vs. 11 - sent Him back to __________.
  • What happened between Pilate & Herod at this time? vs. 12 -

Luke 23:13-25 - Pilate Seeks Jesus' Release

Pilate said after examining all the claims against Jesus, he had not found any guilt in Him.  He said Herod did not either and that is why he had sent Him back to him.  He said he would punish and release Him.  As a tradition, they released a prisoner at the feast.  They all cried out together to release Barabbas for them and to crucify Jesus.

  • What crimes was Barabbas in prison for? vs. 19 -

Pilate wanted to release Jesus, but they kept crying out to crucify Him.  He released Barabbas and delivered Jesus over to their will.

Like Barabbas, we had the guilt of sin, but we were released because Jesus took our punishment.

Luke 23:26-32 - Simon Bears the Cross

When they led Jesus away, they laid hold of Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country.

  • What did they place upon him? vs. 26 -

Following Jesus was a great multitude of people.  The women were mourning and lamenting Him.

  • Who did Jesus tell them they should be crying for and why? vs. 28-31 -

Luke 23:33-49 - The Crucifixion

Two others who were criminals were being led away to be put to death with Jesus.

  • What was the place called where they were all crucified? vs. 33 -
  • What did Jesus say as they were nailing Him to the cross and He hung there for you and for me? vs. 34 -

Jesus is our example in forgiving others when we are wrongfully accused and abused.  We can only forgive when we have completely realized that we are fully forgiven by Jesus.  Think of ones you need to forgive and pray for the ability to forgive them today.

  • How did Jesus teach us to pray? Luke 11:4 -

They cast lots for His garments, which was prophesied in the Old Testament.

  • Look it up and write it out from Psalms 22:18 -

The rulers mocked Him and said "save yourself"...the soldiers also mocked Him, offering Him sour wine, and saying, "save yourself if you are the King of the Jews".

  • Above the heads of those crucified would be the charge they were guilty of such as "Murder" or "Treason", etc..  What was on the inscription above his head which was the charge against Him? vs. 38 -

One of the criminals said "If you are the Christ, save Yourself and us."  The other one said they were guilty of their crimes and deserved to die, but Jesus had done nothing wrong.

  • What did the thief ask Jesus to do for him? vs. 42 -
  • What did Jesus assure him regarding that very day? vs. 43 -
  • What does this teach us about where our souls go immediately when we die?

This man was 'saved' because he admitted that he deserved to die and he placed his faith in Jesus and His kingdom.

  • Do you know that you deserve to die?
  • Have you told the Lord that in order to be saved?

We must acknowledge our sin and our need of Him in order to be saved.

  • What does Romans 10:9,10 tell us?

Jesus was crucified about the sixth hour, which would have been 12 Noon in the middle of the day.

  • What happened to the light of day when the Son of God took our sins upon Himself?  vs. 44 -
  • How long was it like this and how long did He suffer there taking the sins of the world upon Him?  What hour did it end at? vs. 44 -
  • The sun was obscured and what happened to the veil in the temple? vs. 45 -
  • Why is that a significant event?  What purpose did the veil in the temple have?

Take some time to read through Hebrews Chapter 9 and 10 and see if you can give an explanation about what the purpose of the temple was and why it was significant for the temple to tear from top to bottom when Jesus finished His suffering?

  • What did Jesus say during His last breath? vs. 46 -
  • What did the Roman centurion do and say when he witnessed Jesus dying in the way He did? vs. 47 -
  • How were the multitude that witnessed His death reacting? vs. 48 -
  • Who were there seeing these things from a distance? vs. 48 -

Luke 23:50-56 - Jesus Is Buried

  • Who came forth to offer a burial place for Jesus? vs. 50  -
  • What things are we told about this man from vs. 50-53?

Luke Chapter 22 - Assignment

1.Read the Chapter Straight Through from your own Bible at home or from an online Bible website.

2. Read through again in sections broken down for you below and answer the questions if you would like to for help in meditating on the message.

3. Conclude with summarizing the verse that means the most to you and your thoughts and/or prayers.

Luke 22:1-13 - Preparing the Passover

The Feast of Unleavened Bread, which is called the Passover, was approaching.

  • What were the chief priests and the scribes seeking concerning Jesus? vs. 2 -
  • What happened at that time to Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve disciples of Jesus? vs. 3 -
  • What did he do as a result? vs. 4-6 -

As the first day of the feast of Unleavened Bread came, the Passover Lamb had to be sacrificed.  Jesus sent Peter & John to prepare the Passover meal so that He could eat it with His disciples.  They needed to know where to prepare it at.

Jesus told them that when they entered the city of Jerusalem, they would meet a man carrying a pitcher of water.  They were to follow him into the house he entered.  They were to speak to the owner of the house and say 'The Teacher says to you, "Where is the guest room in which I may eat the Passover with My disciples?"'.  Jesus said he would show them a large, furnished, upper room.  They were to prepare the meal there.

They found everything just as Jesus told them and so they prepared the Passover meal.

Luke 22:14-23 - The Lord's Supper

When the hour had come for the Passover meal, Jesus reclined at the table with the twelve apostles with Him.  He told them He had earnestly desired to eat this meal with them before He suffered.

  • When would He have the next meal with them? vs. 16 -

When Jesus had taken a cup and given thanks, He asked the disciples to share the cup among themselves.

  • When would He drink it with them again? vs. 18

Jesus took some bread and gave thanks.  He broke the bread and gave it to the disciples.

  • What did He say the bread symbolized? vs. 19 -
  • What would be the purpose in keeping this ordinance later according to vs.19?

In the same way, Jesus took the cup after they had eaten.

  • What did He say the cup symbolized? vs. 20 -

Then, Jesus announced that the one who would betray Him was sharing the table with Him.  Although it was determined in the Father's plan for Jesus to be betrayed, it was not going to go well for the one who chose in his own heart to betray Jesus.  The disciples began to discuss among themselves which one of them it might be that would do such a thing.  Of course, Judas knew that he had already gone and set it up with the men beforehand.

Luke 22:24-30 - Who Is Greatest

There arose a dispute among the disciples of which one of them was regarded as the greatest.  Jesus explained being 'great' in the kingdom of God and how it differed from the way the Gentiles or worldly people thought of it.  He said the kings lord over people and have authority over them, but it was not to be that way as leaders in God's kingdom.

  • In God's kingdom, what should the greatest ones of authority and leadership do differently than the world's way? vs. 26 -

Jesus told them that He had been among them as their servant as an example.  Look in these other Gospel accounts to see what He said about servanthood at this time and record your insights:

  • John 13:12-17 -
  • Matthew 20:28 -

Jesus wanted the disciples to know that they would be rewarded for standing by Him during His earthly ministry and trials.

  • Just as the Father had given Him a kingdom to rule over, what did He say these disciples would rule or judge over in His kingdom to come? vs. 30 -

Luke 22:31-38 - Disciples Warned of Coming Trials

At that moment, He had a specific word of comfort to give to His disciple, Peter.

  • What had Satan demanded permission of Jesus to do regarding Peter that Jesus wanted him to know about in advance? vs. 31 -
  • What would it make you feel like to know that God gave Satan permission to cause you trouble?

Do you remember the account of Job?  Let's look at it briefly.  In the Old Testament, read Job 1:1-12.

  • What was Job's character like according to God? vs. 1 -
  • What did Job do continually for all of his children? vs. 5 -

Yet, a certain day came when the angels or sons of God were presenting themselves before the Lord and Satan came in with them to the throne of God.  The Lord asked him where he had come from.

  • What was his answer? vs. 7 -

The Lord asked him if he had seen his faithful servant Job.

  • How did God brag on His servant Job to the enemy? vs. 8 -

Satan said the only reason Job served Him was because He had built a hedge to protect him, his house, and all that he had.  He had also blessed the work of his hands and increased his possessions i the land.  He said to God that if the blessings were taken away, Job would curse Him to His face.  God took the challenge and believed in His servant that he would be faithful even if that were to happen to him.

  • What did God give permission to Satan to do to Job? vs. 12 -
  • What did He tell Satan he could not do to Job? vs. 12 -

It is encouraging to know that there is a hedge of protection around us, around our family, and around our possessions.

  • If the enemy ever wanted to bring trouble to us, who would he have to go to first according to the account of Job and with Peter?
  • Does this give you comfort to know?  God is not your enemy, but your protector.  Amen.

Back to the account of Peter in Luke 22:31.  Satan has demanded permission to sift Peter like wheat.

  • What assurance does Jesus give Peter regarding this?  What has Jesus done for him ahead of time? vs. 32 -
  • Even though Peter would fall temporarily, what did Jesus say would happen again and what ministry would come forth from it? vs. 32 -
  • Does it help you to know that when you are going through siftings of your faith, Jesus is praying for you?  He is not your enemy, but your friend.  Amen.  He knows that good will come out of it and you will be more equipped to minister to others.

Jesus then reminded all of the disciples that although he told them to not take money on their journey before, now they needed to be supplied for themselves.  He told them that although he did not have them carry a weapon (sword) before, now they would need to have one.  They said to him they had two swords with them and He said that would be enough. (vs.38)...trouble was coming for them all.

He said that all that was written about Him in the Scriptures of the prophets of Old had to be fulfilled and He would be numbered with the transgressors.

Luke 22:39-46 - The Garden of Gethsemane

After this, Jesus went to the Mount of Olives as was His custom and the disciples followed Him there.  When they arrived at the place, what did He say to them? vs. 40 -

He withdrew from them about a stone's throw away, and He knelt down and began to pray.  He said, "Father, if Thou art willing, remove this cup from Me; yet not My will, but Thine be done."  Jesus was not in a sweet pose as we see Him so often in pictures.  He was agonizing so much that it was necessary for an angel to come and strengthen Him. (vs.43)

  • How is his agony described in verse 44?
  • When he finally rose from this agonizing battle of His will submitting to the Father's, did He find His disciples praying as He had asked them to?  What were they doing? vs. 45 -
  • What did He say to them regarding this? vs. 46 -

Luke 22:47-53 - Jesus Betrayed by Judas

While Jesus was still speaking to His disciples, a multitude came upon them in the garden, and one of the twelve, the one called Judas, was preceding them.

  • How did Judas greet Jesus and what did Jesus say to him? vs. 47,48 -

When His disciples around Him saw what was going to happen, they asked if this was the time to use their sword.  Before He could answer them, one of them had cut the right ear off of the slave of the high priest.

  • What did Jesus say to His disciples? vs. 51 -
  • What did Jesus do for the slave who lost his ear? vs. 51 -
  • Read John's account in John 18:10 of this and comment on which disciple cut off the ear and what the slave's name was. -
  • What words did Jesus say to Peter according to John's account? John 18:11 -

Luke 22:54-65 - Jesus' Arrest

After arresting Jesus, they led Him away, and brought Him to the house of the high priest.

  • Who was following them at a distance? vs. 54 -

Peter sat down with the crowd around a fire in the middle of the courtyard of the home of the high priest.  A certain servant-girl noticed his face in the firelight, and said "This man was with Him too."

  • What did Peter do? vs.57 -

A little later, another saw him and said, "You are one of them too!"

  • What did Peter say to the man? vs. 58 -

After another hour had passed by, another man began to insist, saying "Certainly this man also was with Him, for he is a Galilean too."

  • What did Peter say to him? vs. 60 -
  • What happened after these 3 statements "immediately"? vs. 60 -

When this sound happened, the Lord turned and looked at Peter.

  • What did Peter remember the Lord telling him? vs. 61 -
  • What did Peter do at that time? vs. 62 -
  • According to John's record, what had Peter told Jesus at the Passover meal with Him? John 13::37 -
  • What had Jesus told Him would happen? John 13:38 -

Peter's flesh has failed.  He has not been strong for His Master at the time Jesus needed Him to be strong and in prayer more than ever.  Instead, He denied knowing Him, and caved under the pressure and fear of man.

He probably didn't remember that Jesus told him Satan had demanded to sift him as wheat and that Jesus had prayed for him that his faith remain and when he turned 'again' he would strengthen the brethren ...

...but his faith will remain and we will see a far different Peter after the resurrection with an awesome ministry of strengthening others after the Holy Spirit comes to indwell him.  Praise God that He knows the end from the beginning and that His grace keeps us in the most trying of times.

Luke 22:63-71 - Jesus before the Sanhedrin

The men who were holding Jesus at the high priest's house were abusing Him.

  • What were they doing to Him? vs. 63 -
  • After blindfolding Him, what would they do and then say to Him? vs. 64 -

They said many other blasphemous things against Him.  When it was daylight, the Council of elders (the Sanhedrin), made up of chief priests and scribes, led Him away to their council chamber.

  • What did they want Him to tell them? vs. 67 -
  • How did Jesus respond to them? vs. 68 -
  • What position would Jesus be in from this point on? vs. 69 -
  • When they asked Him, "Are you the Son of God?" - how did Jesus answer them? vs. 70 -

That was all they needed to accuse Him of blasphemy, saying they had heard the testimony themselves.  Now they will present Him before Pilate...next chapter....

Luke 21:1-4 - The Widow's Gift

Jesus saw the rich putting their gifts into the treasury at the temple.  Then He saw a poor widow put in two small copper coins.

  • Who did He say gave the most to God and why? vs. 3-4 -
  • Have you ever not given a tithe or offering because you thought it was too small or that you didn't have anything to give?
  • What does this teach you about your gifts no matter how small they may be in your eyes?

Luke 21:5-24 - Things to Come

Some of His disciples were talking about the temple; how it was adorned with beautiful stones and votive gifts.  Jesus let them know that one day those stones would no longer be there, but the temple would be torn down.

  • What did the disciples want to know? vs. 7 -

Jesus told them not to be misled; that many would come in His name, saying they were Him or that the time was at hand, but they were not to go after them.

  • What should they realize when they heard about wars and disturbances? vs. 9 -
  • What are other signs to take place before His coming?
    • vs. 10 -
    • vs. 10 -
    • vs. 11 -
    • vs. 11 -
    • vs. 11 -
    • vs. 11 -

He wanted His disciples to know that 'before all these things', they would endure persecution.  They would be delivered to the synagogues and the prisons, before kings and governors.

  • What would be the purpose in God allowing this to happen to His disciples? vs. 12,13 -
  • Would the Spirit be there to help them endure this?  How would He help them? vs. 14,15 -

The disciples needed to know that their arrest and persecution would not only come from the people in the world that resented their belief in Him, but those closest to them would betray them and even kill them.

  • Who did He say would come against them? vs. 16 -
  • Who would hate those who followed Him? vs. 17 -
  • They would need to remember Jesus' Words to them when He explained what it meant to be His disciple.  Read these words and write what it says in Matthew 10:34-39 -
  • Do you have people related to you by blood that are your enemy in regard to the cross and your faith in Jesus?  Being a follower of Jesus means we choose to bear His cross no matter who comes against us.  Amen.

Although Jesus has told them that some would even be killed for His Name's sake, He reassures them that a hair of their head will not perish.  This seems contradictory, but He is speaking of their eternal life, for a Christian never dies, but continues to live eternally with the Lord, and they do not perish in regard to their soul and all of eternity.

  • What would gain them this life? vs. 19 -

Jesus goes on to give the signs of the future days ahead for Jerusalem and those who are looking for His kingdom to come.

  • What should be realized when Jerusalem is surrounded by armies? vs. 20 -
  • What should those in the land of Judea do at that time? vs. 21 - He says if you are in the city, leave, and if you are in the country, do not go to the city.
  • What days will it be for the city of Jerusalem and why? vs. 22 -

It will be very difficult for those who are pregnant or have small children because there will be great distress upon the land and wrath to the people.  Jerusalem would fall by the edge of the sword and the people would be taken captive into all the nations. This happened in 70 A.D. when the Romans destroyed the temple and the Jews were scattered under the reign of Titus, but it also prefigures the second coming of Christ which will be a time of distress on Israel during the reign of the AntiChrist.

  • How long would the city of Jerusalem be trampled under foot by the Gentile nations? vs. 24  -
  • What do you think that might mean?

Look at these verses to expand your thinking on this and write some comments.

  • Romans 11:25-32 -

In prophetic verses in Daniel and Revelation, the Jews are going to be under distress for three and one-half years during the rule of the antiChrist, but the remnant that flees and believes in Him will be cared for in the wilderness area during this time.  That is another study and worthy of our time as well.

Luke 21:25-28 - The Return of Christ

One reason we know these verses are also prophetic of the Lord's Second Coming is that there will be "signs" in the sun, the moon, and the stars, and dismay not only in Jerusalem, but upon the earth and all the nations.

  • What will they be perplexed by? vs. 25 -
  • What will men faint from and why? vs. 26 -
  • What will finally be in their sight at that time? vs. 27 -
  • Compare how the angel of the Lord described it to John in Revelation 1:7 -
  • What does Jesus say about Himself?
    • Revelation 1:8 -
    • Revelation 22:12,13 -

Jesus wants His disciples to know so that they can record it for generations to come, that when these things begin to take place, they can straighten up and lift up their heads.  What is drawing near for them? vs. 28 -

What is the Lord's comforting promise to all disciples for all time who follow Jesus and suffer for His name?  Read and comment on this passage.

2 Thessalonians 1:4-12

  • What do we sometimes have to endure for Christ's sake? vs. 4 -
  • When we go through this, what is it a plain indication of according to vs. 5? -

It is only 'just' that God will repay with 'affliction' those who 'afflict' us and to give 'relief' to the afflicted.

  • When will this relief come to us and the judgment come to them? vs. 7 -
  • What will be dealt out and to who? vs. 8 -
  • How will these unbelievers and tormentors of the believers pay the penalty at that time? vs. 9 -

When He comes again, who will He be glorified in? vs. 10 -

For this reason, Paul is praying for every believer that reads this letter.

  • What is he praying for us and how can we pray for one another as we wait for the Lord's return? vs. 11-12 -

Luke 21:29-38 - The Parable of the Fig Tree

Just like we see a fig tree or any tree putting forth leaves, we know that the sign is that summer is near.  We read the sign of the leaves.  When these things begin to happen, what can we know is true? vs. 31 - Heaven and earth will pass away one day, but what will never pass away? vs. 33 - When heaven and earth pass away, what will be created for us? Revelation 21:1 -

Read Luke 21:34-37

Jesus does not want His coming to catch us off guard, so He has given the signs to help prepare us.

  • Who will these things come upon at that time? vs. 35 -

What are ways His disciples can prepare themselves for these times?

  • vs. 34 -
  • vs. 36 -

Application:

  • Do your hearts get weighed down with the worries of life?
  • Are you remaining alert at all times, praying for His strength to endure and escape the things happening in our time?

Knowing the events is not going to fully prepare you.  It will give you signs to watch for, but only knowing Him will give you peace.

  • What did Jesus tell us in John 16:33 -
  • How does this comfort you?

Have you heard the saying, "Know Jesus, Know Peace.  No Jesus, No Peace."

  • Do you know Him?

Then stay alert, share with others while it is still day, and sleep well tonight.

Luke 20:1-8 - Jesus' Authority Questioned

As Jesus taught in the temple, the religious leaders confronted Him wanting to know who gave Him the authority to teach there or say the things He taught.  Rather than answer them, He asked them a question.

  • What did He ask them? vs. 4 -

They were not sure how to answer Him.

  • What did they say? vs. 7 -

Therefore, Jesus did not give them an answer as well.

Luke 20:9-18 - Parable of the Vine-growers

At that time, Jesus told the people a parable of a man who planted a vineyard and then rented it out to vine-growers before he went on a journey for a long time.

  • What did the vine-growers do to every slave that the man sent to them to receive some of the produce from them? See vs. 10, 11, 12 -
  • Who did the man finally decide to send and how did he expect the vine-growers to react? vs. 13 -
  • What did the vine-growers do this time? vs. 14,15 -
  • What did Jesus say the owner of the vineyard would do to the vine-growers for doing this? vs. 16 -
  • How did the people react when they heard this outcome of the parable? vs. 16 -

Jesus quoted Scripture from Old Testament prophecies to them regarding Himself.

  • What did He say was written? vs. 17,18 -
  • What did the religious leaders know to be true and what did they want to do to Him? vs. 19 -

Luke 20:19-26 - Tribute to Caesar

After Jesus had told the parable of the vine-growers, the religious leaders knew He was referring to them.  That tried to lay hands on Him, but feared the people.  They watched Him and sent spies who pretended to be righteous in order to trap Him is a statement of some kind so that He could be arrested.  They questioned Him in regard to paying taxes to Caesar whether or not it was wrong or right.

  • What did Jesus have them show Him? vs. 24 -
  • What did He ask them about it? vs. 24 -
  • When they answered Him, what did He answer them? vs. 24,25 -
  • Were they able to trap Him in a wrong statement? vs. 25 -
  • What effect did His sayings have on them and all the people? vs. 26 -

Luke 20:27-47 - Is There A Resurrection?

Some of the Sadducees came to Jesus to question Him regarding facts about the resurrection.

  • Did they believe in the resurrection? vs. 27 -

They spoke to Him about the law of Moses saying that a brother should marry his brother's wife if she was left a widow without children so that she could have children for the brother's namesake.  They said what if she was married seven different times, but each one died before she bore a child and she married all seven brothers, but all died leaving her childless.  After she died, which one's wife would she be in the resurrection?

When Jesus answered them, He gave some facts about the resurrection of believers.

  • Even though we marry in the age we live in now, will there be marriage in heaven? vs. 35 -
  • Will there ever be death again? vs. 35 -
  • What are people like once they are part of the resurrection? vs. 36 -

Jesus went on to teach them that the dead are surely raised and He referred back to the teaching of Moses to show it.  He spoke of the passage of the burning bush, where Moses called on the God of Abraham, Issac, and Jacob.

  • Who did Jesus say that He is God of, the dead or the living? vs. 38 -

At this point, the scribes said that Jesus had spoken well.  They did not have the courage to question Him any longer about anything.

Jesus, however, had more to ask them about.  He said, "How is it that they say the Christ is David's son?  He went on to say that David himself says in the book of Psalms..."The Lord said to My Lord, 'Sit at My right hand, until I make Thine enemies a footstool for Thy feet.'"...David therefore calls Him 'Lord', and how is He his son?

All the people were listening to Him speak to His disciples as He said to them,

"Beware of the scribes" and He gave the characteristics that they were known for.

List these below from vs. 46-47:

  • 1. ...who like to - vs. 46 -
  • 2. ...and love - vs. 46 -
  • 3. ...and chief seats in - vs. 46 -
  • 4. ...and places of honor at - vs. 46 -

Luke 19:1-10 - Zaccheus Converted

Jesus entered and was passing through Jericho.  There was a man by the name Zaccheus who was a chief tax-gatherer and a rich man.

  • Why was he having a hard time being able to see Jesus in the crowd? vs. 3 -
  • What did Zaccheus do to overcome the obstacle and see Jesus afterall? vs. 4 -
  • When Jesus came by the place that Zaccheus was, what did Jesus say to him? vs. 5 -
  • How did Zaccheus react to this news? vs. 6 -
  • How did the religious community react to Jesus doing this? vs. 7 -
  • When in the presence of the Lord Jesus, what did Zaccheus' heart lead him to say to Him? vs. 8 -
  • When Jesus saw his repentant heart, what did he announce to him? vs. 9 -
  • What did Jesus come to do on earth? vs. 10 -
  • How does this encourage you in regard to loved ones you have that do not know Him yet?

Luke 19:11-27 - Parable of Money Usage

While the crowd and the religious community listened to these things, Jesus went on to tell them a parable BECAUSE He was near Jerusalem and they SUPPOSED the kingdom of God was going to appear IMMEDIATELY.  Therefore, He gave them a parable to help them understand that it was not coming immediately.

He said that a certain nobleman went to a distant country to receive a kingdom for himseld, and then return.  He called 10 of his slaves and gave them 10 minas (a mina is equal to 100 days' wages or nearly $20).  He told the 10 slaves to do business with the 10 minas until he came back to them.

  • What did the citizens of that country do to the nobleman and why? vs. 14 -

After this man received his kingdom, he returned to this country and ordered the slaves he had entrusted with the money to give account of what they had done with it.

  • What did the first slave say when the Master appeared? vs. 16 -
  • What did he say to his slave in regard to this? vs. 17 -
  • What did the second slave say to the Master? vs. 18 -
  • What did he say to his slave in regard to this? vs. 19 -
  • When another of the slaves came to him, he said he did not invest the mina, but put it away in a handkerchief instead.  Why did he not want to invest for his master's profit? vs. 21 -
  • What did he say to this slave in regard to this? vs. 22,23 -
  • What did the master instruct the bystanders to do with the mina that this one had hidden? vs. 24 -
  • Why do you think it was given to the one it was given to as you think back on the various responses?
  • How did the bystanders feel about this reward system? vs. 25 -
  • What did Jesus answer them? vs. 26 -
  • How do you feel about it?  Do you think it is fair that the one who works harder to invest more for the master should be rewarded greater?

He had a larger responsiblity and was faithful in it.  His work is more and yet He was faithful in it.  The one who hid it, had that gift, but didn't want it and didn't respect it or the One who gave it to him.  Every man is offered the free gift of salvation, but if that person does not want it, then what was intended for them will even be taken away.

  • What are you doing to invest in the Master's work since you have been freely given the gift of salvation and forgiveness?
  • Do you feel that He has entrusted you with much or little?
  • How are you handling that responsiblity?

What did Jesus say to do with the bystanders who did not want the master to rule over them? vs. 27 -

Luke 19:28-44 - Triumphal Entry

After He said these things, Jesus continued to ascend to Jerusalem.  When He came near Bethpage and Bethany, near the mount which is called Olivet, He sent two of His disciples to get a colt for Him.

  • How would they know which colt to get for Him and what was unique about this colt? vs. 30 -
  • The owners asked them why they were taking the colt.  What did they tell them as Jesus had instructed them to? vs.31-32 -

They brought the colt to Jesus, spreading their own garments on it for Him to sit upon.  Others were spreading their garments before Jesus as He rode on the road.

  • When He was approading the descent of the Mount of Olives, what did the whole multitude of disciples do and why? vs. 37 -

They cried out:  "Blessed is the King who comes in the Name of the Lord!  Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!"

Luke 19:45-47 - Traders Driven from the Temple

Jesus entered the temple in Jerusalem and He saw people in there selling merchandise.  He cast them out saying that they had made His House into a robber's den.

  • What did He say His House should be? vs. 46 -
  • How much time is given to prayer at the house of worship you meet in?

Jesus taught in the temple every day.

  • What were the chief priests and scribes and leading men trying to do to Him during this time? vs. 47 -

Luke 18:1-8 - Parable on Prayer

Jesus told His disciples a parable to show them that at all times they ought to pray and not to lose heart.

He said there was a judge in a certain city who did not fear God or respect man.  There was a widow in that city who "kept" coming to him asking for legal protection from her opponent.  For awhile he was "unwilling" to help her, but finally changed his mind and granted her the request she needed.

  • What changed his mind?  Why did he grant her this request? vs. 4,5 -
  • Jesus said to His disciples that if the unrighteous judge said that, what would God, the righteous judge, do for His elect who cry out to Him day and night? vs. 7,8 -

Jesus wonders if He will find faith on the earth when He returns.(vs.8)

Luke 18:9-17 - Pharisee and Publican Prayers

Jesus also told a parable to certain ones who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and viewed others with contempt.  He said the two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee, and the other a tax-gatherer.  The Pharisee was thanking God that he would not like "other" people, such as swindlers, unjust, adulterers, or even like "this" tax-gatherer.

  • He listed what he was proud about concerning himself.  What did he say he did religiously? vs. 12 -

The tax-gatherer was standing some distance away from him.

  • What was he unwilling to do?  vs. 13 -
  • How did he show his humility? vs. 13 -

Which one of these two men went home "justified" before God? vs. 14 -

  • Who will be humbled by God? vs. 14 -
  • Who will be exalted (lifted up) by God? vs. 14 -

The people were bringing even their "babies" to Him that He might touch them.  His disciples rebuked them, but what did Jesus say?

  • What belongs to the children and babies? vs. 16 -
  • How must each of us receive the kingdom of God to enter it? vs. 17 -

Luke 18:18-34 - The Rich Young Ruler

A certain ruler questioned Jesus, saying, "Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?"  Jesus asked him why he called Him good since only God is good.  This seemed to be His way of having the man think about the fact that He was God if He was good.  Jesus reminded Him of the commandments:

  • Do not commit adultery
  • Do not murder
  • Do not steal
  • Do not bear false witness
  • Honor your father and mother

Of these, the man said he had kept them from his youth.  Notice, the commandment of not having an idol before God is not listed, and yet Jesus points out that this is surely where he must fall short.

  • What does Jesus ask him to do with his possessions? vs. 22 -
  • Did the man want to follow this command?  Why or why not? vs. 23 -

Jesus looked at him saying how hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God.  He said it would be easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.

Those who heard Jesus say this, asked:  "Then who can be saved?"

  • What did Jesus say in regard to that? vs. 27 -

Peter stepped up to say he and the other disciples had left their own homes to follow Him.  Jesus assured Peter that anyone who has left homes or family for the sake of the kingdom of God would receive reward.

  • What would they receive in this life? vs. 30 -
  • What would they receive in the age to come? vs. 30 -

Do you know if there are any idols before God in your life?  What receives most of your attention and affection in life?  What do you spend most of your time, energy, and money doing?  That is a good indication of anything that 'might' be coming before God in your life.

Luke 18:35-43 - Bartimaeus Receives Sight

As Jesus was approaching Jericho, a certain blind man was sitting by the road, begging.  He heard the the multitude of people going by and he asked what it was about.  He was told that Jesus of Nazareth was passing by.  He called out, saying "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!"  Those who led the way were sternly telling him to be quiet.

  • What did he do all the more? vs. 39 -

Jesus stopped and commanded that he be brought to Him.  When he was brought near, Jesus asked him, "What do you want Me to do for you?"

  • How did the man answer? vs. 41 -
  • What did Jesus recognize about him and do for him? vs. 42 -

Immediately he regained his sight, and began following Him, glorifying God; and when all the people saw it, they gave praise to God.

  • What will you cry out to Jesus today?  He is the same yesterday, today, and forever.  Amen.

Luke 17:1-10 - Instructions In Living

Jesus continued talking with His disciples, telling them about people who cause other people to 'stumble' in their faith.  He called them stumbling blocks.  He acknowledged that it was inevitable that it would happen in life, but he gave a stern warning to those who would cause "a little one" to stumble.  He may have meant a young child or a young Christian of faith or a weaker person in character.

  • Whoever he meant by "little one", it is clear what the condition of the one who 'caused the stumble' would be.  What would be better for them than what their judgment would be? vs. 2 -
  • What are ways that you can think of that would make a young Christian or young person stumble in their faith?

Jesus went on to tell the disciples to be on their guard!  It sounds serious...What is the instruction here?  It has to do with being the one who is "sinned against".

  • What are we to do when a brother sins against us? vs. 3 -
  • If he repents of his sin, what are we to do? vs. 3 -
  • But what if ... he sins again ... even 7 times in one day ... but comes back to say "I repent".  What then ? vs. 4 -
  • Why do you think we need to be on guard about this?  How hard do you think this is to follow?
  • What do the disciples immediately ask the Lord when they hear this hard instruction? vs. 5 -

Jesus told a story to help them understand having faith and a continual grateful heart.

  • If they had faith even as small as a tiny mustard seed, what would that faith enable them to do? vs. 6 -
  • Realizing this, should we pray that the Lord increase our faith?

Jesus gives the example of a worker who comes in from the field of his master tending sheep or plowing the field.  He says that the worker does not immediately sit down for his own meal, but prepares himself in proper clothing and serves his master before he eats and drinks himself.  The master does not 'thank' the servant for doing what is expected (commanded) of him.

  • Therefore, when we are commanded to do such things as not make another stumble or forgive another seven times a day ... rather than argue about that with the Lord or complain among ourselves, what should our response to His commandments be? vs. 10 -
  • By having such obedient spirits and willing hearts for our master, refusing to murmur or complain about serving Him and forgiving each other, what effect will it have on the world we live in and the people we are witnessing to?  Read Philippians 2:12-16 to give insight into how to answer this.

Luke 17:11-21 - Ten Lepers Cleansed, But..

Jesus and His disciples continued walking toward Jerusalem.  When they were passing between Samaria and Galilee, He entered a certain village.  Ten leprous men who stood at a distance met Him, raising their voices, saying "Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!"

  • What did Jesus instruct these 10 lepers to do?
  • What happened on their way of being obedient to this command?

Out of the 10, only 1 came back to thank Jesus. He was a Samaritan.

  • What did he do when he realized he had been healed? vs. 15, 16 -
  • What did Jesus ask about the other nine? vs. 17-18 -
  • What did Jesus tell this one who returned to Him with a grateful heart? vs. 19 -

The Pharisees questioned Jesus as to when the kingdom of God was coming.  Jesus said it was not coming with signs to be observed so that a person would say "Look, here it is" or "Look there it is" ....where was the kingdom of God at that very moment? vs. 21 -

  • Has Jesus cleansed you from your past?  Has He healed you of your sins and saved you?  Has He brought deliverance(s) into your life?
  • Have you been at His feet lately thanking Him?  How about doing that right now?
  • No matter what we are going through, how should our heart be toward our Master? Read 1 Thessalonians 5:12-18 for insight into how to answer this.

Luke 17:22-37 - Second Coming Foretold

From this point of speaking about the Kingdom of God not being observed with signs but having the Kingdom of God there with them at that moment ..... Jesus began to share with His disciples about future days ahead.

  • What will people long to see in the days to come and not see it? vs. 22
  • When signs happen and people say "look there, look here"...what does Jesus say His followers should not do? vs. 23
  • His Second Coming will be quite an event that will not be missed by anyone.  How did He describe it to them?  What would it be like? vs. 24 -

Jesus wanted His disciples to know and pass on to the generations to come the things that would happen before His glorious second coming to earth.

  • What would first happen to Him, their Master and Teacher, the Messiah? vs. 25 -
  • What would the days on earth become like before His second return back to earth? vs. 26-27 -
  • What place does He compare the way the world will be like before His second coming? vs. 28-29 -
  • How do we know that it what Jesus is referring to?  What does He plainly say in vs. 30 -
  • Using a concordance or Bible tools, explain what it was like in Noah's time when God destroyed the earth.  Also explain what it was like in Sodom when God rained fire down to destroy that place.  After making note of these times, how do they compare with the times we live in right now?  Can you see that we are closer in our generation to His coming than anytime before us?

Jesus wants His disciples to know and pass on to others living in those days to come some instructions.  They are not to go back inside their homes to get any possession or come back to their homes from their work in the field because according to Scripture throughout the Bible, we know that Jerusalem will come under seige and that nations will come against them.

According to Matthew's gospel account, he shares how Jesus then tells them in this discourse to 'run to the hills of Judea' and we know from Daniel and Revelation's prophetic words, God will have a place prepared for the remnant of the Jews for 3 years during the tyranny and persecution of the anti-christ against the Jewish nation.  On the night this all breaks forth, one man will be taken from a bed and the other left; one will be taken from the field and the other left.

The disciples ask Him "Where will this happen?"  His answer to them is:  "Where the body is, there also the vultures will be gathered." (vs.37) - Most believe this to be the Battle of Armageddon, the last great battle fought among the nations against the nation of Israel in the valley of Megeddo spoken about in prophecy.  The believing Jews looking for their Messiah must know they do not need to hesitate when these things start, but they need to run to the mountains and be cared for by God.

  • Read Matthew 24 for more insight into this.

Application:

  • How do the times we live in compare to the days of Noah and the environment of Sodom before it was destroyed?
  • How can we be like Noah's family who continued to preach and live a righteous life in the midst of all this violence?
  • Read these verses and take note from them what you can expect from others who live among you and how you can hold on and make it through these times:
    • 2 Peter 2:1-9 -
    • 2 Peter 3:1-9 -
    • 2 Peter 3:10-18 -
