Bibleb

Luke Chapter 7 - Assignment

1. Read the Chapter Straight Through from your own Bible at home or using an online website.

2. Read through again in sections broken down for you below and answer the questions if you would like to for help in meditating on the message.

3. Conclude with summarizing the verse that means the most to you and your thoughts and/or prayers.

Luke 7:1-17 - Jesus Heals a Centurion's Servant

1.  A Roman centurion had a slave that was about to die.  When he heard about Jesus, he sent some Jewish elders to have Jesus save the life of his slave.  The Jewish leaders told Jesus he was worthy of this favor for he was the one who had built their synagogue for them.  Jesus was on his way to the man's house when some friends of the centurion met Him coming.  What message did they bring to Jesus from the centurion?  What did the centurion understand about authority of the spoken word?

2.  How did Jesus respond to the message He received from the centurion?  What did Jesus do from a distance without going to his home for the slave?  What does this tell you about the authority Jesus had?

3.  After this, Jesus went to the city of Nain.  As He approached the gate of the city, a funeral procession came out carrying a dead man in his casket.  This was the only son of this widowed woman that was weeping.  Jesus felt compassion for her and said "Do not weep."..He had the bearers of the coffin to stop.  What did Jesus do for the dead man and his mother?

4.  How did the multitude of people feel when they saw this miracle that Jesus did?  What were they saying about Jesus?

This report went out all over Judea and in all the surrounding district.

Luke 7:18-35 - A Deputation From John

1.  John the Baptist's disciples reported to him about all that Jesus was doing.  John sent 2 of his disciples to Jesus to ask Him if He was the "Expected One" or if they were to look for someone else."  What did Jesus do in front of their eyes at that very moment? vs. 21 - What did He tell them to tell John in answer to his question? vs. 22-23 -

2.  When the messengers of John left, Jesus began to speak to the multitudes about John the BaptistThis is not the same John as His disciple John.

He asked the people what they went into the wilderness to look at?  Was it a reed shaken by the wind?  Was it someone dressed in soft clothing?  No...they went out to see a prophet and Jesus wanted them to know John was more than a prophet. Who was John in fulfillment of Old Testament Scripture? vs. 27-28

Note:  We know from Luke 3:20 that Herod had locked John the Baptist up in prison....this was why he must have been doubting his calling and if Jesus was the One sent from God as the Messiah or not.  If so, why had He not gotten him out of prison?  That must have been a question he had.  Jesus realized his faith was shaken, but he was not a reed shaken by the wind, and Jesus wanted all to know just how great in the eyes of God, John the Baptist was in His plan and purpose.

3.  How does this encourage you?

4.  Every person in the kingdom of God is even greater in God's purpose than John the Baptist and that is because Jesus has come and fulfilled the Scriptures and we have the Holy Spirit abiding in us by faith as believers now, each one of us.  Most of the people who were tax-gatherers and sinners had acknowledged God's justice by being baptized by John for their sins.  In contrast, what had the Pharisees and the lawyers done?  vs. 30

5.  What were the religious leaders saying about John the Baptist and why? vs. 33 -

6.  What were the religious leaders saying about Jesus and why? vs. 34 -

Jesus assures all of us:  "Wisdom is vindicated by all her children."

Luke 7:36-50 - Jesus Ministers To A Woman of Reputation

1. One Pharisee requested that Jesus dine with him.  A woman in the city who was a sinner heard that Jesus was at the Pharisee's home and she went there to see Him.  She brought an alabaster vial of perfume.  What did she do for Jesus? vs. 38

2.  How did the Pharisee feel about this action of the woman and how did He think Jesus should feel about her? vs. 39

3.  Jesus used a parable of two debtors to help explain a truth to the Pharisee.  He told him that a moneylender needed to collect money from two debtors; one who owed 500 denarii and the other who owed 50 denarii.  They were both unable to pay, so he forgave both of them their debt.  He asked which one of the debtors would love the moneylender more for forgiving them?  What was the Pharisee's answer to Him?

4.  This was correct.  Jesus rebuked the Pharisee for not showing love for Him when He came into His house and yet the woman showed her love for Him.  What three areas does He explain to him? vs. 44-46

5.  Jesus forgave her sins although they were many.  He told her that her faith had saved her and she could go in peace.  What were those reclining at the table with Him thinking in regard to Him?
