Bibleb

Luke Chapter 9 - Assignment

1. Read the Chapter Straight Through from your own Bible at home or from an online website.

2. Read through again in sections broken down for you below and answer the questions if you would like to for help in meditating on the message.

3. Conclude with summarizing the verse that means the most to you and your thoughts and/or prayers.

Luke 9:1-11 - Ministry of the Twelve

1.  What were the twelve disciples of Jesus sent out to do?  What did they have authority over during their mission?  What were they to take with them on their mission?  How were their needs to be met on the mission?

2.  Why was Herod the tetrarch upset when he heard about all that was happening with the Gospel and its message?  What had Herod done to John the Baptist earlier?

3.  The apostles returned from their missions and gave the reports to Jesus.  He took them with Him to the city of Bethsaida.  The multitudes became aware of this and followed them wherever they went.  How did Jesus respond to this? vs. 11 -

Luke 9:12-27 - Five Thousand Fed

1. As the day came to an end, the disciples told Jesus to send the multitudes away so they could find lodging and food.  Jesus told them to feed the multitude.  How many were there to feed?  What did Jesus feed them?  After everyone ate and was satisfied, how much was left over?

2.  After this, while Jesus was praying alone, He asked His disciples who had gone with Him a question...  He said "Who do people say that I am?"  What were the answers they gave Him?  Jesus got personal and asked them directly "Who do you say that I am?"  ... How did Peter answer Him?

3.  Jesus did not want them to tell others this revelation of who He was until after His resurrection.  He told the disciples that first He must suffer and be killed and be raised on the third day.  As He shared this with them, what did He tell them His followers must be willing to do as well? vs. 23 -

4.  What happens to those who want to save their own lives?  What happens if we are willing to lose our life for Jesus?  What happens if we are ashamed of Him and His words?

Jesus said that some that were there with Him would not taste death until they saw the kingdom of God ...

What happened just 8 days later?

((( see the next section )))

Luke 9:28-45 - The Transfiguration

1. Jesus has just told the disciples that some of them would not die until they had seen the kingdom of God.  Some eight days later, He took along Peter, James, and John to the mountain with Him to pray.  What happened to Jesus while He was praying?  vs.29 -

2.  Who appeared in their glory talking with Jesus as He was in His glory? What were they talking about? vs. 30-31 -

3.  Peter, James, and John had been overcome with sleep, but when they were fully awake, they saw His glory and the two men standing with Him in their glory.  As the two were parting from Jesus, what did Peter say? vs. 33 -

4.  As Peter was saying that He would build a place not only for Jesus, but for Moses and Elijah also, what did God have to say to Peter and the others about this? vs. 34-35 -

It is easy to see that this was saying - "It is not the Law and the Prophets" which Moses & Elijah represented - but it is Jesus who is the fulfillment of all the Law and Prophecies that they were to listen to and obey fully.  They would soon realize after the resurrection that Jesus was the New Covenant replacing the Old Covenant of the Law.

After the voice had spoken from heaven, Jesus was then alone.  The disciples kept silent about what had happened in those days.

5.  On the next day, when they had come down from the mountain, a great multitude met Jesus.  A man from the multitude shouted out, saying, "Teacher, I beg You to look at my son, for he is my only boy."  Why did the boy need His help? vs. 39 -   What happened when the man asked the disciples to help him with this? vs. 40 -

6.  Jesus told him to bring the son to Him.  What happened while he was approaching Jesus? vs. 42 -

Jesus then rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the boy, and gave him back to his father.  All were amazed!

7.  While everyone was marveling over this great miracle, Jesus said this to His disciples:  "Let these words sink into your ears:  for the Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men."  Did the disciples understand what He meant? vs. 45 -

Luke 9:46-56 - The Test of Greatness

1. The disciples argued among themselves as to who was the greatest.  Jesus knew what they were thinking in their hearts, so He took a child and had the child stand by His side.  How did He describe to them who the greatest would be? vs. 48 -

2.  John told Jesus that they saw someone casting out demons using His Name.  He said they tried to hinder him because he was not one following along with them.  What did Jesus say about this?

3.  As Jesus was getting closer to His death, burial, resurrection, and ascension to the Father ... He set His face to go to Jerusalem for His hour was coming.  He sent messengers ahead of Him.  They went to a certain village of the Samaritans to make arrangements there.  Why didn't the Samaritans receive Him at that time? vs. 53 -  What did James and John want to do to them for rejecting Jesus and His need? vs. 54 -  What did Jesus in return to them? vs. 55,56 -

They went on to another village.

Luke 9:57-62 - Exacting Discipleship

1. As Jesus and the disciples continued on their journey, someone said to Jesus: "I will follow You wherever You go."  How did Jesus reply to him? vs. 58 -

2.  Jesus said to another along the way:  "Follow Me".  But the person said, "Permit me first to go and bury my father."  What did Jesus say to him? vs. 60 -

3.  Another said to Jesus: "I will follow You, Lord; but first permit me to say good-bye to those at home."  What did Jesus say to him? vs. 62 -

4.  Do you have an excuse today for not following the Lord?  If so, what do you think Jesus might be saying to you in the same manner as these?
