Review & Intro: Chapter 26 was a chapter of giving thanksgiving and worship to the Lord for the blessing of the produce of the land they would receive from the land of Promise they were about to enter. In Chapter 27, we see that there will be blessings and cursings announced when they enter the Promised Land on the twin peaked mountains of Mt. Gerizim and Mt. Ebal. Surely they will know right and wrong; the way to be blessed and also the way to be cursed. Deuteronomy Chapter 27 - Observation Questions 1. What was the charge that Moses and the elders of Israel gave to the people? vs. 1 2. What were the sons of Israel to set up on the day that they crossed over the Jordan? vs. 2 3. What were they to be coated with and what was to be written on them? vs. 2,3 4. What kind of land was the Lord giving to them? vs. 3 5. These stones that would have curses written upon them were to be set up on what mountain the very day that they crossed the Jordan? vs. 4 6. What else was to be built there? vs. 5 7. What kind of stones were to be used on the altar built for the Lord on Mt. Ebal? vs.5,6 8. What two offerings are mentioned that would be offered on the altar built on Mt. Ebal? vs. 6,7 - Name 2 9. When these offerings were made, what was the emotion they were to have as they ate there together? vs. 7 10. How were they to write upon the stones coated with lime? vs. 8 11. Moses and the Levitical priests spoke to all of Israel, telling them to be silent and to listen. They told them that they had become "a people for the Lord their God" that day (vs.9) ... Comment on the curses on the verses below and note that on each one the people agreed by saying "Amen" outloud. When the law was written on stones rather than written on the heart by the Holy Spirit we have today, they had to make intellectual decisions and use the elements of fear to keep them in line. Today, believers in the Lord Jesus Christ, have the law of God written on our hearts. We have The Father, The Son, and The Holy Spirit actually living inside of us as we are the temple of the Holy Spirit. Rather than fear of punishment and a curse, we have the motivation of love without fear. The Lord turned our "have to" into "want to". Freedom in Jesus brings rest and His commandments are not a burden to us. Let's celebrate the verses below and the fact that Jesus took the curse upon Himself so that we can live in the blessings of Abraham, the father of faith. Amen. Enjoy this.
