Jacob has just rebuked his sons, Simeon & Levi, who took revenge on the entire city of Shechem for raping their sister Dinah. They allowed their anger to destroy the whole city of men. Jacob's words to them was: "You have brought trouble on me by making me odious among the inhabitants of the land; and my men being few in number, they will gather together against me and attack me and I will be destroyed, I and my household." - Genesis 34:30 This was a time of fear and uncertainty, humiliation and shame. I am sure every emotion was going through Jacob's mind at the time. How awesome that God spoke to him and gave him direction.

This is the reassurance Jacob needed to be reminded of! He needed to go back to that first encounter with Almighty God and remember the promises that were made to him.
