Mark Worksheet - Chapter 16

Worksheet - Mark 16

Review of Chapter 15:

  • Jesus was falsely accused, beaten in the head repeatedly, spit upon, and mocked or made fun of.  He did not answer a word or try to defend Himself.  Does this give you any comfort in knowing that He understands the abuse you have endured in life?
  • On the cross, Jesus was ridiculed with people saying "Come off the cross if You are really God's Son!"..."Save Yourself"...but on the cross, Jesus' Words were "Father, Forgive them for they know not what they do."...When we are ridiculed for our faith, do we choose to retaliate or do we follow the example of Jesus and pray for Him to forgive those who persecute us?
  • When Jesus died, the veil in the temple was torn in two from the top to the bottom.  This veil separated the people from the holy of holies in the temple.  Only the high priest could go beyond that veil one time a year to sacrifice for the sins of the people.  Hebrews 9 teaches us that Christ appeared as our High Priest and His sacrifice was the new covenant that removes the veil of separation.  According to Hebrews 10:19-25 we can go into the holy of holies with confidence before God's throne through the blood of Jesus our Lord.
  • Mark, Chapter 16:

    The Resurrection

    1.  When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James & Salome bought spices that they might come and anoint Jesus.  Very early on the first day of the week, they came to the tomb when the sun had risen.  They wondered who would roll away the heavy stone from the entrance of the tomb so that they could anoint the body of Jesus.

    • When they saw the tomb, what did they realize? vs. 4 -
    • When they entered inside the tomb, what did they see? vs. 5 -
    • What did he tell them? vs. 6 -
    • Who were the women to go and tell and what were they to say? vs. 7 -
    • How did the women react to this? vs. 8 -

    2.  After Jesus had risen on the first day of the week, who did He first appear to?

    • vs. 9 -

What ministry did Jesus grant her when He was with her before His death?

    • vs. 9 -

She went to tell those disciples that had been with Him while they were mourning and weeping over His death ...but they did not believe her when she said He was alive.

Later, two of the disciples were walking on their way to the country and Jesus appeared to them.  They reported this to the others as well and they did not believe them either.

    The Disciples Commissioned

    3.  Finally, Jesus appeared to the eleven (remember Judas Iscariot killed himself after betraying the Lord so he is not among them now).

    • What did Jesus say to them ? vs. 14 -

    4.  After this, Jesus commissioned them !

    • Where were they to go? vs. 15 -
    • What were they to preach? vs. 15 -
    • Who were they to preach to? vs. 15 -
    • What was the promise to those who believed and were baptized? vs. 16 -
    • What were the signs that would accompany those believers in that day? vs. 17-18 -

Note:  Some of the oldest manuscripts do not contain verses 9-20 and some believe these things were for the apostles of the New Testament church before the New Testament was written to give authencation of them really being the eye witnesses of knowing and hearing the Words and seeing the death, burial, and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ.....If you believe all these signs accompany believers today as well, that is understandable as well and others hold to your personal interpretation also.  We don't debate these things.  We simply look at them with face value and allow the Holy Spirit to reveal His truth to each of us on these areas where sincere and studious believers can sometimes disagree.

    5.  After Jesus spoke these things to them, He was received up into heaven.

    • Where did He sit down at?

They went out and preached while the Lord worked with them, confirming the word by the signs that followed. (vs. 19,20)

    Review & Reflect:

Let's review with questions and reflection:

    • Jesus was killed on Friday and resurrected on Sunday.
    • Jesus first appeared to Mary Magdalene whom He had cast out seven demons.
    • Mary was not believed by the disciples.
    • Jesus then appeared to two of the disciples and they believed, but the others who did not see Him did not believe when they were told.
    • Jesus then appeared to all eleven apostles and rebuked them for not believing those who had told them of His resurrection.
    • Jesus commissioned the eleven apostles to go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.
    • Those who believe and are baptized will be saved.
    • The ones who do not believe will be condemned.
    • Jesus was received into heaven after this and now sits at the right hand of God.

Do you believe the Gospel - the death, burial, and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ?

    Conclusion & Application:

Write out this verse and state when you became a believer or if you want to become a believer right now.

    • Romans 10:8-10 -
    • Do you believe?
    • Will you confess?
    • Will you follow the Lord in baptism?
