John Worksheet - Chapter 2

ccgroupstudy
Chapter Two begins by saying in verse 1...
"On the third day"....
What does this mean? ....Third day of what? .... It could not be the next day after the water baptism of John because the other gospel accounts tell us that Jesus was led immediately into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil for 40 days and 40 nights following His baptism by John the Baptist.
It would be after the temptation that He came back to Galilee to call His first disciples.  When John the Baptist was with his 2 disciples and saw Jesus walking He said "Behold, the Lamb of God" and that is when he told them about the sign of the dove he had seen on Him at the water baptism and how he knew He was the One.  At that point, these 2 followed Jesus to see what He was about, but their actual leaving of the nets and following Him fulltime would be when He called them from their fishing career (see Mark 1:9-18; Matthew 4:1-20; Luke 4:1-15)
Most likely it is the "third day" after the Lord's conversation with Nathanael.  We must remember that John is written differently from the other Gospels with the purpose of showing us signs that Jesus did that proved Him to be the Son of God.  Remember John 20:30-31 that we began our lessons with?  This was John's purpose in his writing.  It is not necessarily in chronological order, so don't worry about that as much as the fact that we are told that the first sign Jesus did was to turn the water into wine and this is only recorded in John's Gospel.  (precious)
How does John 2:l begin? Where was Jesus on this third day?
  • Who was with him?
  • What happened that caused the mother of Jesus to be concerned and ask her son for some help?
  • What was His response to her?
This is another time phrase you should mark!
His "hour" has not yet "come"....
What do you think that must mean?
(You might want to put an hour glass beside this statement as well - my hour- because Jesus will say this more than once in this Gospel and we will be watching for it - it will have significance - when His hour finally comes................)
John 2:6 - "Now there were six stone waterpots set there fore the Jewish custom of purification, containing twenty or thirty gallons each"
  • Why do we need to think on this verse?
  • What word did you mark? ?????
Did you put a star over the word JEWISH? (good idea to)
  • What was this "custom" for?
The SIGN He will perform will signify that purification does not come through religious traditions, but through a change of nature...

Jesus decides to perform HIS FIRST SIGN (verse 11)

This is a time phrase also....
"This beginning of His SIGNS Jesus did in Cana of Galilee."
  • What did this first sign manifest?
  • What did it cause HIS disciples to do?
  • What was it that He did in this FIRST SIGN or MIRACLE? VS.9 -
No one there knew this except the servants and His own disciples....it was not His hour to show Himself to the Jewish leaders, but now His disciples believed in Him (those who were with Him so far.... on this third day.......)

Mark another TIME PHRASE in vs. 12
"After this"......
  • Where did He go?
  • Who was with Him?
  • How long did they stay there?
  • What was near according to verse 13?
You would need to put a "star" over the word PASSOVER and the word Jews because they are both referring to JEWISH things.
  • Where did Jesus go in order to celebrate the Passover?
When he arrived at the temple in Jerusalem, He saw people turning the temple into a place of business and He drove them out of the place.
  • What did He call the temple? (vs.16)
His disciples remembered an Old Testament Psalm when they witnessed this:

"Zeal for Your house will consume Me."
(Remember the Old Testament wrote about Jesus!)
NOW...the JEWS wanted a SIGN from Him to show He had the authority to do this in the temple and surely for calling this HIS Father's House....but Jesus told them the SIGN they would finally see....
  • What did Jesus say in verse l9 to them?
  • How did they respond in verse 20?
  • What was Jesus actually speaking about?
  • When would His disciples finally understand?
Once they understood, what did they believe?
(vs.22) -
DURING THE FEAST OF PASSOVER IN JERUSALEM
  • What did many do? (vs.23)
  • What were they OBSERVING? (VS.24)
  • Do you see how all of this keeps connecting back to John's PURPOSE for writing this Gospel and recording certain SIGNS that Jesus did?
Although people were 'believing' in Jesus, He was not 'entrusting' Himself to them....
What did he KNOW? (vs. 24,25)
This shows another characteristic of His diety - "knowing" what is in men.
Additional Information:

PASSOVER is actually a TIME Phrase also because it was a JEWISH feast day that was celebrated at the SAME TIME every single year. It began on the 14th day of the Jew's first month. That month was called Nisan, and it corresponds to either March or April of our calendar year.
