Paul ended chapter 12 saying that he would show us how to desire the greater gifts of the Spirit and a more excellent way (12:31). What is essential to our use of any gift according to 13:1-3 2. Sometime we are envious of the faith we see in others and wish we could believe and receive in the manner they do. But even if a person has faith that could move a mountain, what does it mean without love? vs. 2 3. Sometimes we go all out in our gifts and callings, beyond the call of duty in sacrifice and service, and may not feel as appreciated as we want for all that we do. What is the only motivation that will survive in such sacrificial giving? vs. 3 4. Paul describes for us what true God-like love looks like and how it is shown in behavior and action. Observation Questions For 1 Corinthians Chapter 12 1.  As pagans (unbelievers), the people were led astray to believe in idols, but Paul wants them to not be ignorant in regard to what they have in the body of Christ.  What subject does he address here? vs.1,2 2.  Who will be glorified through the Spirit of God in these things if the believer is genuine? vs. 3 3.  Paul explains that the entire aspect of God is involved - Jesus, Holy Spirit, and God the Father.  Name the results of the use of spiritual gifts and who the glory goes to: vs. 4 - vs. 5 - vs. 6 - 4.  What is the purpose of the gift that is given to each person? vs. 7 5) Name the gifts that are described by Paul for us in vs.8-10 vs. 8 - vs. 8 - vs. 9 - vs. 9 - vs. 10 - vs. 10 - vs. 10 - vs. 10 - vs. 10 - Note:  We need to remember that the Word of God had not been completed and put into print as we have our Bibles today.  It was literally being spoken by the apostles and the members of the body through various ways and spiritual giftings.  Today, when we have prophetic words, we have the written word to examine all spoken words by.  Praise the Lord. 6.  Who distributes (hands out) the gifts to each individual? vs. 11 7.  How many members are in the body of Christ?  vs. 12,14 8.  Who baptizes us into the body of Christ and what are we made to drink of? vs. 13 9.  Paul makes a comparison of the parts of our own bodies to help us understand how much we need each other in the members of the body of Christ.  Name the body part given and what he says about it in the verses to follow. vs. 15 - vs. 16 - 10.  Why would we not want our entire body to be an eye or an ear? vs. 17 11.  Who is in charge of where the parts of the body are, in our physical bodies and in the body of Christ with our spiritual gifts? vs. 18 12.  Why would we not want the body of Christ to all be the same? vs.18-21 13.  In our physical bodies, every part is needed even though it is not seen as outwardly as other parts.  What is true of the weaker and less honorable parts of our bodies? vs.22-25 14. Paul wants us to make this parallel with the spiritual body in Christ.  What happens when one part of your body is injured; do you not hurt all over?  When one part of your body is comforted, does it not effect your entire being?  So it is with the body and the parts of the body in the one body of Christ.  Write out verse 26 and think about how it should apply: vs. 26 - 15. We are Christ's body, and individually members (parts) of it.  What are the positions that God has given in the body of Christ for the good of all?  Name the list from vs. 28 below: 1.) 2.) 3.) 4.) 5.) 6.) 7.) 8.) 16.  Is everyone an apostle?  Is everyone a prophet?  Is everyone a worker of miracles?  Does everyone have a gift of healing?  Does everyone speak in a tongue?  Does everyone interpret a tongue? vs.29-30 17.  Paul wants us to desire the greater gifts which will be explained to us in the next chapter tomorrow - faith, hope, and love - those that remain forever.  He will explain that the greatest of all these is love.  A great chapter waits for us tomorrow.  For today, think about the spiritual gifts explained and the purpose in them.  Where do you think you fit in the body of Christ and why?  Have you discovered your place in the body so that you can function as God designed you to for the sake of all?  18.  Reflect on this chapter and pray.

Paul praised this church for remembering the traditions that he had delivered to them. He wanted them to understand the role of authority in the church and family. Who is the head of the man? vs.3 3. What does Paul want the Corinthians to understand concerning the Israelites connection to Moses when they crossed the Red Sea? vs.1-5 2. When the Israelites drank from the rock that gave them water in the wilderness, who was the rock that followed them ? vs. 4 3. Why was God not well-pleased with most of the Israelites in the wilderness? vs. 5 4. What are we suppose to learn from the Israelites who fed on the things of the Lord, but did not obey Him from their hearts? vs. 6 5. Every temptation that we face is common to mankind. God is faithful and will not allow us to be tempted beyond what we are able to endure. How will this lesson help you the next time you face a temptation to compromise your convictions? 12. What does Paul tell the Corinthians to "run from"? vs. 14 13. Can you think of things that you need to "run from" today? 14. Paul wants them to think about the Lord's Supper (communion). When they partake of it, they do it in order to identify and be one with Christ in His death for us - His blood shed; His body broken. When the Israelities sacrifice to God, they share in those sacrifices as ordered by Moses to be a part of the Lord Himself in symbolism. Even though Paul knows an idol is nothing and things sacrificed to idols are really nothing .... what are the Gentiles actually sacrificing to and becoming part of? vs. 16-20 15. Paul does not want them to share in the things of the evil one. Can we fellowship at the Lord's table to be one with Him and then fellowship to take things sacrificed to demons? How would this provoke our Lord? vs. 22 16. Can you think of an example in our lives that would be sharing in both the Lord's table and the table of demons? If you can, share your thoughts. 17. Paul repeats that all things are lawful for him. He is not under any law, but free in Christ. Why then, does he not do certain things? Name the 2 reasons he gives. vs. 23 18. We should not be seeking our own good out of a situation, but the good of the other person. Why is it okay to eat anything that is sold in the meat market for our own conscience sake? vs.24-26 19. If an unbeliever invites you to eat, you can have anything set before you without asking any questions (your freedom) ... but if they tell you it has been sacrificed to idols, you should not eat it, not for the sake of your conscience, but for theirs. Paul says "Why is my freedom judged by another's conscience?" - and then he answers his own question. What are we to do concerning food, drink, or anything we do? vs. 27-31 20. Why is it so important not to offend another person if possible? vs. 32-33 21. Can you think of examples when you have not taken your freedom in order to be an example to another because they would think it to be wrong? Do you see why you let go of this "right"? It's not a church rule or a religious rule, etc. - it is your decision to be selfless and prefer them in order to bring them to Christ.
