Deuteronomy Worksheet - Chapter 6

Review & Intro:  After reminding the Israelites about the 10 commandments they heard the Lord give to Moses on the mountain from the midst of the fire in Chapter 5, Moses explains to them now in Chapter 6, the motive of the heart in obeying the Lord's commands.  We are to love the Lord with all of our heart, soul, and strength, and teach our children to do so as well.

9.  What does it mean to have them "on your heart"?  It ties back to "loving the Lord" with all of our heart, soul, strength, and mind.  It is a matter of the heart.  Love is the motivating factor.  What did Jesus say in regard to His commandments?  Comment on the verses below:

10.  Back to Deuteronomy 6. ... (vs.8,9) ...The Lord told Moses to tell them to bind His commands to their hands, their frontals, and on the doorposts of their house and on their gates.  Although we have His commands on our hearts and in our hearts, it is good to have visual reminders when the day gets busy or our lives get hectic.  Do you have visual reminders to draw you back to His Word and prayer?  Share if you would like; give the others ideas to think upon.
11.  It would come about that the Lord would bring them into the promised land.  They would be given great and splendid cities which they did not build ... houses full of good things which they did not fill ... hewn cisterns they did not dig ... vineyards and olive trees they did not plant ... They would eat and be satisfied. (vs.10,11)  What danger would they face as they became satisfied and had it so good? vs. 12
12.  Moses tells them again that they Lord commands that they fear only Him and worship only Him.  They are not to follow other gods; any of the gods of the peoples who surround them. (vs.13,14) ... What would the anger and jealousy of the Lord do to them if they were to worship other gods? vs. 15
13.  They were not to put the Lord to the "test" as they tested Him at Massah. (vs.16) ... Review what happened in that situation and give a summary from the verses below:
  • Exodus 17:1-7 -
14. What will be the benefits of Israel keeping God's commandments and doing what is right and good in the land that they possess? vs. 17,18
15.  When their sons asked them in later times the reason why they kept the testimonies, statutes, and judgments that the Lord had given them, what were they to tell their sons? vs. 20-25
16.  Again, why did the Lord give them the commandments and statutes to observe and follow? vs.24-25 - Name 5 things

Application:
 17.  The chapter has covered more than "keeping" God's commandments.  It has focused on the issue of His commandments being on "our heart".  We have seen that it is most important what our "motive" is for obeying the Lord, and the only motive should be because we "love" Him.  Let's examine our hearts and think about why we read the Bible in this group and why we do other things with Christians, church, etc.  Is it because we love Him - with all our hearts, minds, soul, and strength?  Examine your "motives" and ask the Lord to show you His love for you and your love for Him.  Renew your love commitment today.  Here are some verses to meditate on:
  • Psalm 119:11 -
  • 1 Peter 1:6-9 -
  • 1 John 4:16 -
  • 1 John 5:3 -
18.  Summarize the lesson and post a prayer if you would like.
