Deuteronomy Worksheet - Chapter 14

Review & Intro:  In Deuteronomy Chapter 13, Moses was reminding the Israelites that they were to test prophets and dreamers for a message that agreed with what God had told them and not be deceived by the miracle when it was the message that must be His truth.  In Chapter 14, they will be reminded of the importance in following His Words and not the customs of the heathen nations around them, such as foods eaten, the way to grieve the dead, and even how to sacrifice and make offerings His way and not the way the other nations did for their gods.

Clarke’s Commentary explains, “It was a custom of the ancient heathens, when they had gathered in all their fruits, to take a kid and boil it in the milk of its mother; and then, in a magical way, to go about and sprinkle with it all their trees and fields, gardens and orchards; thinking by these means to make them fruitful, that they might bring forth more abundantly in the following year.” God commanded that these vile practices were not to be used in observing His Holy Days.
