Deuteronomy Worksheet - Chapter 7

Review & Intro: In Chapter 5, Moses reviewed the ten commandments with them. In Chapter 6, Moses spoke of the motivation to obey the commands of the Lord; to love Him with all their heart, mind, soul, and strength. He said they were to teach them to their children. In Chapter 7, he will talk to them about God's command that they utterly destroy the enemies and make no covenants with them or worship the gods of the nations around them. He set His love upon them and chose them out of all the peoples to be a holy people, set apart for Him and His purposes. He would drive them out "little by little"; this would not be an easy journey, but He would be with them and they were not to fear. Amen.
Deuteronomy-Outline
Deuteronomy Chapter 7 - Observation Questions
1. What were the names of the 7 nations that were greater and stronger than Israel; yet God would deliver them to Israel and they would defeat them? vs. 1 - Name 7
2. Once the Lord gave them the victory over these, what was His commands for them to carry out? vs. 2 - Name 3 things
3. The Lord also told them not to "intermarry" with them. (vs.3) Why did He not want them to give their daughters to their sons or take their daughters for their sons? How would the women of the other culture effect their sons? vs. 4
4. How would the Lord react to this? vs. 4
5. Rather than intermarry with them and co-exist with their gods, what were the direct commands of God concerning their idols of worship? vs. 5 - Name 4 things
6. They were to hew down their "Asherim". Use your concordance and share about this worship and give your thoughts on it.
7. Why was the Lord so emphatic that they not leave a trace of worship to false gods? ... What purpose had the Lord delivered them and set them apart for? vs. 6
8. What are we told concerning this in the New Testament? Comment on the verse below:
  • 1 Peter 2:9 -
9. Back to Deuteronomy 7. What had the Lord "set upon them" ? vs. 7 -
10. What was the Lord's reason for choosing them? vs. 7,8 -
11. We were not slaves in Egypt, but Egypt is a picture of the world. We are told that we were slaves to things in the world and that Satan is the god of this world. We are tempted through the enemy, and through our own flesh, and our flesh actually wars against the Spirit of God within us. Comment on the verses below:
  • Matthew 26:41 -
  • Romans 8:6 -
  • Galatians 5:16,17 -
  • Galatians 6:8 -
  • 1 Peter 2:11 -
  • 1 John 2:16 -
Note: In the same way that the Lord gave them deliverance from Egypt, and victory over the enemies of the land, He has done for us through our salvation; choosing us and taking us out of the world system, setting us apart for Himself. Yet, we have to continue to destroy the idols and make the choice to not co-exist with the the world system or give into the cravings of the lust of the flesh. The Christian life is a life of warfare. We have an enemy and we are still in our flesh. When we walk in the Spirit, we will not carry out the desires of the flesh. We continue to be sanctified and this pleases our Lord whom we serve. Amen?
12. Back to Deuteronomy 7. What are the things that they are to remember about the Lord their God? vs. 9 - Name 4 things
13. God's lovingkindness goes to a 1000th generation with those who love Him and keep His commandments. If you are a believer today, you are a part of that generation that loves the Lord. Notice that He also repays the person who "hates" Him. It is the individual that decides to "hate" the Lord. God rewards the faithful, but He is a God of judgment and will repay those who "hate" Him and His people.(vs.9,10) Comment on the following verses about His coming wrath to those who "hate" Him.
  • John 3:36 -
  • Romans 1:18 -
  • Romans 2:5 -
  • Romans 2:8 -
  • Ephesians 5:6 -
  • 2 Thessalonians 1:6 -
  • Revelation 6:16,17 -
  • Revelation 19:15 -
14. What is the good news for the believer in the Lord Jesus Christ?
  • Romans 5:9 -
  • Ephesians 2:3,...etc..
  • 1 Thessalonians 1:10 -
  • 1 Thessalonians 5:9 -
15. Back to Deuteronomy 7. If the Israelites would "listen and keep" the commandments, statutes, and judgments which Moses was giving them from the Lord, the Lord would keep the covenant and lovingkindness He had made with their forefathers. (vs.11,12) ... What were the blessings that they would receive from the Lord? List them below by the verses given.
  • vs. 13 - Name 9 things
  • vs. 14 - Name 3 things
  • vs. 15 - What would be removed from them?
16. The Lord said that they were to consume all the peoples....and their eye was not to pity them ... and they were not to serve their gods... If they did pity them or serve their gods, what would that be to them? vs. 16 -

17. The Lord knew that "fear" would be a factor because He has already said these nations are greater and stronger than they are. Yet, He wants them to look back and remember what the Lord did to Pharaoh and all of Egypt to get him to let His people go from slavery. (vs.17-19). It is easy to let circumstances make us fear. What have we been taught in the New Testament about fear?
  • Matthew 10:28 -
  • Luke 12:7 -
  • Romans 8:15 -
  • Hebrews 2:14 -
  • Hebrews 12:15 -
  • 1 Peter 3:14 -
  • 1 John 4:18 -
  • Revelation 2:10 -
  • Revelation 12:11 -
  • Ephesians 6:11 -
  • James 4:7 -
  • 1 John 4:4 -
18. The Lord told them how He would destroy those they feared. How would He do it and what were they to believe about His ability to do it? vs. 20,21 -
19. The Lord did want them to know that the nations would not be cleared away immediately. How would it happen and why? vs. 22
Note: As we looked at in verses previously, the Christian life is a series of battles. Nothing comes easy. We must stand firm in our faith against the wiles of the enemy and our flesh, over and over again. We have the Lord with us and He is always there to help us fight. We must learn to walk by faith and not by sight. Amen?
20. The Lord has told them He will send the hornet against the nations and drive them out, little by little. What other tactic will He use according to vs.23,24 -
21. With the Lord fighting for them, no man will be able to stand against them. This reminds us of something Paul wanted us to understand in the New Testament. Comment on the verse below:
  • Romans 8:31-39 -
22. Back to Deuteronomy 7. What did the Lord want them to fully understand in regard to the graven images of the gods of these nations? vs.25,26 - Try to find 8-9 things He said about their idols in regard to Israel from these verses.

Application:
23. What are ways that you might not "utterly destroy" a stronghold after the Lord delivers you from it? It might be alcohol, thinking you can handle a little bit again ... It might be the use of the computer in an inappropriate way after the Lord has delivered you from an addiction of some kind ... It might be keeping the credit cards for emergencies after there was conviction not to depend on them. Share how these things can steal the joy and victory from our lives if we are not careful.
24. Some of us may have married an unbeliever and suffered the consequences of "intermarrying" with someone who did not serve our same God. We need to pray for our children and counsel our friends that it is so important not to be unequally yoked. The Lord warned that the daughters of the ungodly would turn their sons "away" from Him. I have 2 sons and I know I have labored this point so many times to them, but it is so true. Comment on the following verses:
  • Deuteronomy 7:4 -
  • Judges 3:5-7 -
  • 2 Corinthians 6:14-15 -
25. I love that the Lord told them in this chapter that He "set His love" upon them and chose them from all the peoples to be a people of His own possession. How has the Lord demonstrated that love to us?
  • John 3:16 -
  • Romans 5:8 -
26. Let's remember that the Lord is driving out the enemy's strongholds on us, but we must be obedient to stay in the Word, stay in fellowship with His people, and to pray knowing the Holy Spirit will pray for us in our weaknesses. What have you been praying for and waiting for? He is listening, but He drives things out "little by little" to teach us to depend on Him and to continue to "look to Him" for our daily needs. I have a vision I believe is from Him with all of my heart. I have been waiting for over 20 years. I sometimes act out in the flesh when I become frustrated in the wait; sometimes I get impatient and feel ashamed about my lack of faith. Yet, I know the Lord is "for me" and He wants me to fulfill something that will help others in His kingdom. I must continue to wait, knowing that He is accomplishing it for me, "little by little", and the most important thing I can do is be faithful in the testing, watching my own attitudes and my heart. It is the same for all of us. What has the Lord shown you today? Share it please.
27. Summarize the lesson and post a prayer if you would like.
