Review & Intro: Before the new generation crosses the Jordan into areas of new conquest, Moses reviews for them the victories they have already witnessed, such as the utter defeat of Sihon, king of the Amorites we saw in Chapter 2 of Deuteronomy. They have gone from "wanderers" in the wilderness to "warriors", becoming well known to the enemies around them. In Chapter 3, they will do the same thing to the kingdom of Og in Bashan and all of his cities and people. When you think upon the timeline of your own life, you see the times of victory and the times of defeat. Where are you at currently .. having victory or defeat? ... God wants to remind us again that in the Lord Jesus Christ, we are more than conquerors! Amen.
1. After the defeat of Sihon, king of the Amorites from Heshbon, they turned and went up the road to Bashan. What did Og, king of Bashan and his people come out to do and where was it at? vs. 1Deuteronomy Chapter 3 - Observation Questions

4. The Psalmist declares this victory of the Lord as well. Comment on the following verses:

6. They utterly destroyed the kingdom of Og as they had done the kingdom of Sihon, not leaving any survivors, and taking the spoil of the cities as their booty. (vs.6-9) ... Og, the king of Bashan was the only one left of the remnant of the giants, the Rephaim. His bedstead was still around to remind them just how big this man was. What was the size of the bed? (convert that into measurements we understand as well if you can) - vs.10,11 -

13. Moses reminded them of the command he gave to these tribes (Reuben, Gad, and 1/2 tribe of Manesseh) of how they could leave their wives, little ones, and livestock in the conquered areas given them on that side of the Jordan. He wanted the vailant men of their armies to cross over with the rest of Israel.(vs.18-20) When could they return to their families and possessions again? vs. 20 -
14. Moses reminded Joshua of the victories over these 2 kings, Sihon & Og, as well as the fact the the Lord was the One who gave the victories to them. (vs.21) This was to encourage him as he lead the troops to conquer the lands of Canaan on the other side of the Jordan. Write out the specific encouragement he gave to Joshua - vs. 22
15. Moses also reminded everyone that he had "pleaded" with the Lord to change His mind about allowing him (Moses) to go into the promised land with everyone. (vs.23-25)...What did Moses feel he had just "begun" to observe about the Lord at this point in his life (even though he was 120 years of age) ... ? vs. 23
16. What was the Lord's explicit answer to him when he continued to ask? vs. 26
17. The Lord told Moses to go up to the top of Mt. Pisgah and he would be able to view the land with his eyes - to the west, north, south, and east ... but he would not be able to cross over the Jordan river with them. (vs.27) ... Application:
19. Moses begged the Lord to change His mind about not allowing him to enter the promised land. The Lord told him to stop asking; He was not going to change His mind. He did allow Moses to see the land from Mt. Pisgah before he died. Let's look at two other instances of men asking the Lord to change His mind and how they submitted to God's will above their own. Comment on the following verses:

- Paul - Thorn in his flesh - 2 Corinthians 12:7-10 -
20. Have you ever begged the Lord to change His mind concerning something that you have had to endure? Do you remember when you finally stopped asking because you could rest in His will for you above your own? Share your experience with us if you don't mind?
21. The heart of Moses is revealed as he passes the paton over to his servant Joshua. He will encourage him and strengthen him. Our own failures and sad disappointments can be a platform of ministry to help others and to strengthen them as we have learned from our own mistakes and want to help them avoid the pitfalls.
