Exodus Worksheet - Chapter 8

Review of Chapter 7
When we looked at chapter seven, we saw four principles dealing with God's judgments.

  • First, God works to glorify Himself, that is, to make Himself known as God in the world.
  • Second, judgment is not just for punishment, but it is also to show the righteousness and grace of God.
  • Third, judgment often takes the form of an attack on the false gods or idols of those being judged.
  • And fourth, it often increases in severity until it issues either in repentance or destruction.
Let's watch and see how these principles are illustrated as we continue our journey through the Ten Plagues.
  • In 7, we saw the first plaque of the Nile turning to blood. ..
  • Today In 8,  we come to
  • the second and third plagues:
  • frogs and gnats.
Exodus Chapter 8

The Lord had Moses tell Pharaoh to let His people go that they might serve Him.
1.  What would happen this time if Pharaoh did not let them go? vs. 2 -
2.  The Nile would swarm with frogs until they came up out of the river and into their homes.
  • Where specifically would the frogs go to? vs. 3-4 -
The Lord had Aaron stretch out with his hand the staff over the rivers, the streams, the pools .. and make frogs come all over the land of Egypt.  The frogs came up and covered the land!
3.  Were the magicians of Egypt able to do the same with their secret arts? vs. 7 -
They could bring them, but obviously couldn't get rid of them since Pharaoh could not turn to them for help.
4.  How did Pharaoh respond to this plague? vs. 8 -
5.  Moses had Pharaoh tell him 'WHEN' he wanted him to pray for the frogs to leave them and their houses and only be in the Nile river.
  • When did Pharaoh want this done? vs. 10 -
6.  Moses said it would be done according to his desire.
  • What was this to show Pharaoh? vs. 10 -
7.  What did Moses do after he told Pharaoh this? vs. 12 -
8.  The Lord answered the prayer of Moses.  The frogs died immediately in the houses, courts, and fields.
  • What did they do with the frogs and what was the consequence of having them in the land this way? vs. 14 -
Many times when we receive forgiveness and help, there are still consequences to face from the results of the sowing to the flesh and sin.
  • True?
9.  What did Pharaoh do as soon as he got some relief from the judgment? vs. 15 -

Application:
When God tries to get our attention with a trial or a tribulation, most of us can make promises of amendment that we mean at the moment. But what happens when the pressure comes off will make or break your Christian life.
We are to endure which means to bear up under our sorrows in a way that honors God.  It may be true that when the going gets touch, the tough get going ... but it is also true that when the going eases up, the mature keep growing.
  • Do you serve God just as much when things are going well as we do when things are going bad?
Why or why not?
  • Hebrews 12:3 -
  • Hebrews 12:4-8 -
  • Hebrews 12:10-13 -
  • James 1:12 -
That is the application to us as believers, but Pharaoh is the unbeliever.  How many times do the unbelievers promise God to serve Him if He will just get them out of this or that, but as soon as they get relief, they harden their heart.
10. Why is it so important that they not harden their heart when the Holy Spirit is dealing with them?
  • Hebrews 4:7 -
  • 2 Corinthians 6:1-2 -
Next is the Plague of Insects.
After Pharaoh hardened his heart again and refused to let the people go as he had promised he would do if God helped him - the Lord had Moses stretch out his staff to strike the dust of the earth - the dust itself became gnats (lice) through all the land of Egypt!
11. Could the magicians imitate this miracle with their secret arts?
After all this was the very nature of dust turning into lice!
  • What did they have to admit to Pharaoh? vs. 18-19 -
12. Did Pharaoh listen to the magicians? vs. 19 -
The Lord told Moses to rise early the next morning and tell Pharaoh that if he would not let His people go, there would be swarms of insects on all the people and in all the houses of the Egyptians where they lived
13. What was the Lord going to do for His people Israel that day in the land of Goshen? vs. 22 -
14. What was this to show Pharaoh? vs. 22 -
15. The Lord put a division between His people Israel and the Egyptians that next day.
How does He put a division between His people and the world today?
  • 2 Corinthians 6:14-18 -
16. After the Lord brought all these insects to come all over the people of Egypt and in their houses,
  • .....what did Pharaoh decide to let Moses & Aaron & the people of Israel do? vs. 25 -
17. Moses would not compromise what God had said to do.
  • What did Moses say it must be to be acceptable for the relief of the plague? vs. 26-27 -
18. Pharaoh said okay then.  He said he would let them go to sacrifice in the wilderness to their God, but not go very far away
  • ...what did he want them to do for him while they were at it? vs. 28 -
19. Moses told him he would go make supplication to the Lord that the swarms of insects would depart from him and his people.
  • What did Moses warn him not to do this time? vs. 29 -
20. Did the Lord honor the prayer of Moses for Pharaoh? vs. 31 -
21. Did Pharaoh honor his word to the Lord and to Moses? vs. 32 -

Application:
  • Have you made a promise to the Lord?
  • Has He been faithful to you?
  • Will you harden your heart or will you do as the Scriptures say and refuse to let your heart be hard?
Decide that you are going to be thankful to the Lord and walk in His ways.
