Acts Worksheet - Chapter 7

In Chapter 6, Stephen had been falsely accused in respect to Moses, The Law, and the Holy Place. When the Jewish High Priest asks him if he is guilty of the charges, he gives them his knowledge and respect of Moses and the Law, going all the way back to Abraham's call and the beginning of the nation of Israel. What a great history lesson Stephen gives us in this chapter. Let's see what we can learn.

  1. First, he tells them how the God of glory appeared to their father Abraham. Where did God appear to him at? vs. 2

  2. What did God instruct Abraham to do at that time? vs. 3

  3. Where did Abraham live until after his father died? vs. 4

  4. Where did God move Abraham to after that? vs. 4

  5. Although Abraham did not receive an inheritance in this land, and he did not have a child in his old age, God gave Him a promise. What did God promise Abraham? vs. 5

  6. What did God say would happen to Abraham's people before they possessed the promised land? vs. 6-7

  7. What covenant was Abraham given by God? vs. 8

  8. Abraham had Isaac in his old age, the promised descendant, and he circumcised him on the eighth day. Who did Isaac become the father of in time? vs. 8

  9. Who was the father of the twelve patriarchs (tribes) of Israel? vs. 8

The patriarchs became jealous of Joseph and sold him into Egypt. Yet God was with him, and rescued him from all his afflictions, and granted him favor and wisdom in the sight of Pharaoh, king of Egypt, and he made him governor over Egypt and all his household.

  10. What happened that caused Jacob's family to go to Egypt? vs.11-12

On the second visit Joseph made himself known to his brothers, and Joseph's family was disclosed to Pharaoh. Then Joseph sent word and invited Jacob his father and all his relatives to come to him, seventy-five persons in all. Jacob went down to Egypt and there he and our fathers died. From there they were removed to Shechem and laid in the tomb which Abraham had purchased for a sum of money from the sons of Hamor in Shechem.

As the time of the promise was approaching which God had assured to Abraham, the people increased and multiplied in Egypt, until THERE AROSE ANOTHER KING OVER EGYPT WHO KNEW NOTHING ABOUT JOSEPH. It was he who took shrewd advantage of our race and mistreated our fathers so that they would expose their infants and they would not survive. It was at this time that Moses was born; and he was lovely in the sight of God, and he was nurtured three months in his father's home.

  11. At 3 months old, Moses' parents put him out into the Nile River. Who found him and raised him as her own son? vs. 21

  12. Moses was educated with the Egyptians and was a man of power in words and deeds. What did he decide to do as he was getting close to being 40 years of age? vs.23 What did he find and how did he handle it? vs. 24

  13. What did Moses think the Hebrews would understand about him? vs.25

On the following day he appeared to them as they were fighting together, and he tried to reconcile them in peace, saying, `Men, you are brethren, why do you injure one another?' .."But the one who was injuring his neighbor pushed him away, saying, `WHO MADE YOU A RULER AND JUDGE OVER US?`YOU DO NOT MEAN TO KILL ME AS YOU KILLED THE EGYPTIAN YESTERDAY, DO YOU?'

  14. When Moses realized that the Egyptians would want revenge now for what he had done, where did Moses flee to and what happened during the next 40 years that he lived there? vs. 29

After forty years had passed, AN ANGEL APPEARED TO HIM IN THE WILDERNESS OF MOUNT Sinai, IN THE FLAME OF A BURNING THORN BUSH. When Moses saw it, he marveled at the sight; and as he approached to look more closely, there came the voice of the Lord: `I AM THE GOD OF YOUR FATHERS, THE GOD OF ABRAHAM AND ISAAC AND JACOB.' Moses shook with fear and would not venture to look. BUT THE LORD SAID TO HIM, `TAKE OFF THE SANDALS FROM YOUR FEET, FOR THE PLACE ON WHICH YOU ARE STANDING IS HOLY GROUND.'

  15. What did God commission Moses to do 40 years after he had been in hiding and thinking that he had blown the call of God on his life? (Moses would be 80 years old at this point) vs. 34

  16. How many years did Moses lead the children of Israel in the wilderness as they left Egypt to go to the Promised Land? vs. 36

This is the Moses who said to the sons of Israel, `GOD WILL RAISE UP FOR YOU A PROPHET LIKE ME FROM YOUR BRETHREN.' This is the one who was in the congregation in the wilderness together with the angel who was speaking to him on Mount Sinai, and who was with our fathers; and he received living oracles to pass on to you. Our fathers were unwilling to be obedient to him, but repudiated him and in their hearts turned back to Egypt, SAYING TO AARON, `MAKE FOR US GODS WHO WILL GO BEFORE US; FOR THIS MOSES WHO LED US OUT OF THE LAND OF EGYPT--WE DO NOT KNOW WHAT HAPPENED TO HIM.' (Acts 7:40)(note..this was during the 40 days and nights Moses was up on the mountain receiving the 10 commandments and the Law)

  17. What did Aaron make for the people that led them into sin and God's judgment on them? vs. 41

  18. What were the idols that the children of Israel worshiped during the 40 years in the wilderness? vs. 42,43

  19. Stephen talks about how Moses made the tabernacle of testimony in the wilderness after the pattern that God showed him. He said that it was in David's heart to build a permanent dwelling place for the Lord. It was David's son, Solomon, who carried out his father's plans and build the temple. What does Stephen say about God's dwelling in temples made by humans? vs. 48-50

  20. After giving the history of Moses, Stephen tells these men who are listening to him that they are 1) stiff-necked and 2) uncircumcised in heart and 3) ears always resisting the Holy Spirit just as their fathers were. Although they had received the law as ordained by angels, they did not keep it. He reminded them how their fathers persecuted all the prophets sent to them and killed those who had previously announced the coming of the Righteous One, whose betrayers and murderers they had become. How did the Jews respond to this message to them? vs. 54

  21. But being full of the Holy Spirit, he gazed intently into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. What did he see?

  22. How did the Jews respond to the message Stephen gave to them? vs. 57

When they had driven him out of the city, they began stoning him; and the witnesses laid aside their robes at the feet of a young man named Saul. (later he will be known as the apostle Paul)

  23. As they were stoning Stephen, what did he cry out to the Lord? vs. 59

  24. As Stephen was dying, what was his last prayer? vs. 60

  25. Do you think you could have that kind of attitude in death if all of this has happened to you? Why or why not? Do you have any life experiences to share with us?
