John Worksheet - Chapter 19

John Chapter 19
Then Pilate took Jesus, and SCOURGED Him.
(This was by a whip that had pieces of bone on the straps that would hook into the flesh and tear the flesh into strips)  Read the way this treatment by the Romans is described in each of the Gospel accounts:
  • Matthew 27:27-31 (write out the details)
  • Mark 15:16-20 (write these details as well)
Luke gives us the account of being sent to Herod because He was of the Galilean jurisdiction. It was actually Herod and his soldiers that put the robe on Him and sent him back to Pilate.
  • According to Luke 23:12, what did this event do for the relationship of Pilate and Herod?
This is when Pilate said there was no guilt found in Jesus that would be punishable by death.
  • Yet, what did the JEWS CRY OUT FOR? Luke 23:20-25 -
Crucifixion was given only to the worst of criminals. It was the most cruel death sentence ever designed, one of slow torture!
Write out comments from John's account of this sentencing on Jesus by Pilate.
  • John 19:1-11 -
PILATE was told by the Jews that they have a law that He ought to die because He made Himself out to be the SON OF GOD. This made Pilate nervous and He asked Jesus himself "Where are You from?" Jesus did not answer him. Pilate said to him "You do not speak to me? Do you not know that I have AUTHORITY to release You, and I have AUTHORITY to CRUCIFY You?"
  • What did Jesus tell Pilate in John 19:11?
AMEN!
  • As a result of this, what did Pilate try to do? (vs.12)
  • What pressure did the Jews put on him and how did Pilate respond to them?(vs.12-15)
John states that Jesus went out to be crucified bearing His own cross. Luke gives us greater detail in that Simon of Cyrene was pulled out to carry the cross behind Jesus, signifying how very weak the loss of blood had made our Lord, who was willing to lay aside His rights as God to suffer this for us. In Luke 23, we are told of the crowds of people that followed him, including women who were mourning and lamenting Him.
  • What did He tell the women? Luke 23:28 -
Jerusalem needs to be wept over! A day coming when they will cry for the mountains to fall on them! Two others also, who were CRIMINALS, were being led away to be put to death with Him.
The CRUCIFIXION:
Read the account in each Gospel and write out the details of what you learn.
  • Matthew 27:33-56 -
  • Mark 15:22-41 -
  • Luke 23:33-49 -
  • John 19:16-30 -
THE SAYINGS OF CHRIST ON THE CROSS:
  1. "ELI, ELI, LAMA SABACHTHANI?", that is: "MY GOD,MY GOD, WHY HAST THOU FORSAKEN ME?"
  2.  "FATHER, FORGIVE THEM; FOR THEY DO NOT KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING"
  3. "TRULY I SAY TO YOU, TODAY YOU SHALL BE WITH ME IN PARADISE" (to the repentant thief next to him on the cross)
  4.  "FATHER, INTO THY HANDS, I COMMIT MY SPIRIT"
  5.  "WOMAN, BEHOLD, YOUR SON!....and to the disciple..."BEHOLD, YOUR MOTHER!" (the disciple took her into his home and cared for her from that day forward)
  6.  "I AM THIRSTY"
  7.  "IT IS FINISHED!" (And He bowed His head, and gave up His spirit)
In the Greek, it is the word "Tetelestai" and it means "PAID IN FULL"!
  • Read and write out what was accomplished for YOUR DEBT on the CROSS from Colossians 2:13-15 -
Keep reading and commenting!
  • Colossians 2:16-23
Answer this:
  • What are you going to tell the religious spirits and the demonic powers that accuse you IF you know that YOU have truly DIED with Christ and are now LIVING with HIM through faith in His death, burial, and resurrection?
REMEMBER JOHN 8?  (Read John 8:31-36)

"If therefore the SON shall make you FREE, you shall be FREE INDEED!"
As stated earlier, CRUCIFIXION was a slow death, and they needed to go ahead after much suffering, and BREAK the legs of the people so that they couldn't keep pushing up for air to breathe. They needed to hurry the process because of the Passover preparations. When they got to Jesus, He had already died, and they DID NOT BREAK HIS LEGS.
  • Write out the prophecy that this fulfilled (among so many!) John 19:36 -
To make sure He was dead, a soldier pierced His side with his sword.
  • What prophecy did this fulfill?
  • Write it out - John 19:37 -
  • Who got permission from Pilate to take the body of Jesus and bury it?
  • Who else came to help PREPARE the body of Jesus for burial?John 19:39 -
Do you remember Nicodemus from John, Chapter 3?The Words of Jesus must of have had an effect on him..."YE MUST BE BORN AGAIN"
  • Where was Jesus buried? John 19:41,42 -
ON THE THIRD DAY, JESUS WILL FULFILL THE ULTIMATE PROPHECY -
HE WILL BE RAISED FROM THE DEAD!
We will look at that in the next chapter - John, Chapter 20
  • For now, are you born again?
What prayer of thanksgiving will you give to Jesus, the Son of God, the Son of Man Who paid the greatest price for your sin? Write it out !
