Numbers Worksheet ~ Numbers Chapter 26

Review & Intro:  A plague broke out in the account recorded in Numbers Chapter 25 due to the people playing the harlot with Moabite women and joining themselves to Baal of Peor in idolatry.  Eleazar's son, Phinehas, took action to remove the young man from the tribe of Simeon and the young lady from the leaders of Midian who came into the camp of the Lord and blatantly went into the family tent for sexual pleasure.  Because of the zeal of Phinehas, the plague was stopped.  We are told that 24,000 people died in that plague.  As the Lord had promised, the older generation had died off before they go into the Promised Land after 40 years in the wilderness.  In Chapter 26, a new census is taken of the new generation of the men 20 years and upward able to go to war.  As Joshua takes the new generation into the Promised Land, there will be many battles to fight.  These are the warriors that will fight for Israel.

Note:  The Levites are not numbered among the sons of Israel because they did not receive an inheritance. (vs.62)  Though Levites did not receive land as their inheritance, they still received various cities in which to dwell and use the fields to feed their livestock. By letting Levites dwell in other tribes' allotted areas, God had arranged for the people of the nation of Israel to stay close to the commandments of God all the time.  Levites had the duty of giving sacrifices to God and keeping the tabernacle of the LORD. They also had the duty to teach the Law of God to the people (Deuteronomy 33:10). God Himself became their inheritance so that they would not stain their heart with the worldly things but concentrate on serving God. In other words, rather than giving them the land to get a harvest from it, God let them make their living through the tithes and various offerings that the people gave to God.

46.  Among all of the Israelites numbered by Moses and Eleazar in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho, there was not a man that had been numbered by Moses and Aaron in the first census taken in the wilderness of Sinai.
