Deuteronomy Worksheet - Chapter 2

Review & Into:  In Deuteronomy Chapter 1, we saw that it was a "farewell address" to the people of Irael before he dies and they enter the Promised Land. He reviewed their history, how they went from Mt. Sinai to this land 38 years before, but faltered in faith when they heard the report of the spies. God told that generation they would die in the wilderness and that their children would enter the land. He told them to set out for the wilderness by the way to the Red Sea (Deut. 1:40). Chapter 2 is a continuation of the history lesson of how they got to where they are at this time about to cross over to the Promised Land.

Application:
29.  Moses and Aaron along with the faithful Caleb and Joshua had to turn around and go through the wilderness for the unbelief of all the others.  Many times the godly suffer the consequences of unbelief and decisions of others.  Our individual responsibility is to remain faithful to the Lord and to continue to look to the reward in following Him no matter what others have caused in our lives.  Comment on the following verses:
  • 1 Peter 4:12-19 -
  • 2 Thessalonians 1:5-12 -
  • Hebrews 12:1-3 -
  • Matthew 5:43-48 -
30.  God had given land to possess to the blood relatives of Israel.  Esau was Israel (Jacob's) brother - remember the story of Jacob & Esau - (Genesis 27-36)  ... The land of Moab and Ammon were blood relatives too. Do you remember the story of Lot and his daughters after the destruction of Sodom & Gomorrah? (Genesis 19:31-38 ) ... The Israelites were not to provoke them but to pass through their areas peacefully not coveting what the Lord had given them.  We are to not covet what our relatives or friends have been blessed with.  We have been taught to be content with what the Lord has given us.  Comment on these verses:
  • Exodus 20:17 -
  • Deuteronomy 7;25 -
  • 1 Timothy 6:6-12 -
  • Philippians 4:11-13 -
  • Hebrews 13:5 -
  • 1 Thessalonians 5:18 -
31.   Moses reminds the Israelites that there were giants in the lands that God had given Esau, Moab, and Ammon to possess, but they had driven them out and possessed their land.  It is a reminder to them that upon the report of "giants in the land", they had not believed Him and had not gone in to occupy at that time.  Only Caleb and Joshua had returned with the good word that they would surely overcome with God's help, but the people were weak, afraid, and full of unbelief, and would not do it.  Consequently, they had wandered in the wilderness and died off, one by one.  What giants are you facing today?  God wants you to believe Him; to believe His word; to stand firm in faith and be an overcomer.  Comment on these verses:
  • 1 John 4:4
  • 1 Peter 5:8-11
  • Ephesians 6:10-18
32.  Read Psalm 136:19-26 - The Psalmist recounts the mercies of the Lord through the wilderness journeys and the battles they faced.  His mercy endures forever.  Write out a summary of this prayer of praise \o/
33.  Summarize this lesson and post a prayer if you would like.
