Deuteronomy Worksheet - Chapter 4

 
Review & Intro:  Up to this point in the book of Deuteronomy, Moses has been reviewing the history of what has happened to the Israelites. Now, he begins to review the Law which God gave them. But before he gets into the specific items of the Law, he's going to cover the importance of their general approach to the Law.

1.  What will be the result for Israel of listening and performing the statutes and judgments of the Lord? vs. 1

10.  Back to Deuteronomy 4.  Moses asked them "What nation is there that has a god so near to it as is the Lord our God whenever we call on Him?" (vs.7) .... How true this is!  What can we share with others in regard to calling upon the Lord today?  Comment on the verses below:

11.  Back to Deuteronomy 4.  Moses also asked "What nation is there that has statutes and judgments as righteous as this whole law which he had set before them that day ?" (vs.8) ...However, they needed to give heed to themselves to "keep their soul diligently".  What was the danger if they did not keep them in their hearts and make them known to their sons and their grandsons to keep them? vs. 9 -
12.   Peter had the same concern of believers "forgetting" what the Lord had done for them, which would result in lack of fruit bearing.  Comment on the following verses:

13.  Back to Deuteronomy 4.  Moses takes them back to "rembrance" of when they stood before the Lord at Mt. Horeb and they heard God speak to Moses so that they would learn to fear Him all the days they lived on earth in order to teach their children.  (vs.10) ... He reminded them that they came near and stood at the foot of the mountain.  What was that experience like for them? vs. 11,12 -
14.  How does the writer of Hebrews describe this?  Comment on the verses below:

16.  Back to Deuteronomy 4.  Moses reminds them that they heard the voice of the Lord, but they did not see His "form". (vs.12) ... They heard the Lord declare to them the 10 commandments that He had wrote Himself on the two tablets of stone. (vs.13) ... The Lord commanded Moses at that time to teach the people His statutes and His judgments so that they would perform them in the land that they were going to possess. (vs.14). ....Since they did not 'see the form of God', what would they have to be very careful about? vs.15-18 -

24.  Moses prophetically tells them that they will not live long in the land that they are going to possess because they will turn to idolatry, and provoke the Lord to anger. (vs.25-26)... What will the Lord do with them when they do this? vs. 27,28 -

Note:  How does this comfort you concerning your children or others you have been praying for who are not walking with the Lord as you have desired them to?  I know it comforts me a great deal.
26.  What will happen for Israel when they are in distress in the latter days? vs. 30
27.  What 4 things can Israel know is true concerning the Lord? vs. 31
28.  Even at that moment, Moses wanted them to ask about the former days before them, since the day that God created man on the earth; then to ask themselves, "Has anything ever been done like this (vs.32,33) ...  - that a people heard the voice of God - that a god tried to take for himself a nation from another nation by trials, signs, wonders, and war - with a mighty hand and great terrors - as the Lord did for them in Egypt - (vs.34) ... What was all of this to show them? vs. 35 -
29.  Why did the Lord allow the Israelites to "hear" HIs voice from the midst of the fire? vs. 36
30.  Do you believe that "hearing" His voice audibly today would do that for you?  Do you believe we are any different apart from the Holy Spirit abiding in us than they were?  How do we hear the voice of God today and what kind of purpose does it still have for us? Comment on the verses below:

32.  Back to Deuteronomy 4.  Moses reminded them that it was the Lord Who drove out nations greater and mightier than they were to bring them in and give their land to them for an inheritance as it is today. (vs.38).  What doe we still see on the news daily?  We see Israel called "Occupiers"; we see the surrounding countries wanting to drive them into the sea, saying they do not belong there.  Do the lessons learned from Moses help you understand the ancient conflict that is still going on today?  Please share your thoughts.

Application:
40. The lesson has taken you to cross references throughout, so you should be applying the Scriptures step by step on this lesson.  In ending today, it is good to think back on the fact that the warnings were given even though God already "knew" they would not heed the warnings, would be scattered by enemies, and suffer consequences for it.  Yet, ahead of time, He said that they will seek Him again and find Him when they seek with their hearts.  What great encouragement that is as we pray for our prodigals and even look back on how He has been faithful to us when we have strayed and then returned.  He is always there.  He nevers leaves us or forsakes us.  Comment on the verses below as you reflect on this for prayer and praise today:
