Hebrews Chapter 6

Hebrews 6

  1. What does the author of Hebrews want them to leave? vs. 1
  2. In pressing on to maturity, what should they not lay a foundation of "again"? vs. 1-3 - Name 6 Things

Note: The author of this letter to the Hebrews knows that some of them have been enlightened about the uselessness of the "dead works" and they keep drifting back into the fallacy of works rather than faith. We saw that in chapters 4 and 5. It is important that we take the whole letter in context and remember that in the original writing it was one letter, not broken up by chapters and verses we now have. These individuals have tasted the heavenly gift and have been partakers of the Holy Spirit. They have actually embraced Christianity but are now being part of the apostasy, leaving that belief and returning back to a denial of Christ being the Promised Messiah. It is clear from verse 6 that they are "crucifying to themselves the Son of God and putting Him to open shame". For them, it is impossible to renew them again to repentance because for a second time they are in open denial of Him. This is not a case of a weak believer or one who struggles with doubts or temptations. The writer has been clear that Jesus is a merciful High Priest that understands and sympathizes with our weaknesses. We know that we are told by Jesus in John 10:26-30 that His sheep will follow Him and no one can snatch them out of His Father's hand. We are secure in Him.
  3. What happens to ground that drinks in rain that often falls on it and brings forth vegetation (fruit) ? vs. 7
  4. What happens to ground that yields thorns and thistles? vs. 8
  5. The writer of Hebrews now changes to a more gentle and assuring tone, as he calls the believers in Christ, "beloved" .... What is he convinced of concerning them? vs. 9
  6. God is not unjust. What will He not forget concerning us? vs. 10 - Name 4 things
  7. The writer desires that each one show the same diligence to realize the full "assurance" of hope until the end. (vs.11) Rather than be sluggish, who should we imitate? vs. 12
  8. What was the promise that God made to Abraham? vs. 13,14
  9. Abraham waited patiently and obtained the promise.(vs.15) Men enter oaths to end disputes between them (vs.16) When God made a promise to the heirs (believers in Christ) - What did He want them to understand about His Word to them? Fill in the blanks from vs.17,18 .....

The "____________ of His purpose" ... and that "It is ____________ for Him to lie."
  10. Because of these unchangeable things in God's character, what does this give us strong encouragement to do? vs. 18
  11. How is this hope in God described by the writer of Hebrews? vs. 19 - Name 5 things.
  12. Are you encouraged by this chapter? Do you understand how secure that anchor of the soul is when you are no longer subject to works, but you are saved by faith into God's grace in Jesus Christ? Summarize your thoughts and post a prayer if you would like.
