Exodus Worksheet - Chapter 24

Review:  In Chapter 20, we saw that the people heard the voice of God when Moses was on the mountain receiving the 10 commandments, but they begged to hear His voice no more because it made them fear and tremble.  They told Moses that they would obey what he told them if he would hear the Lord for them.  Moses has given them not only the commandments but ordinances from the Lord.  In Chapter 24, we see that God is wanting Moses and some others to come close again to experience His presence.
Exodus 24
1.  Who did God invite to come and worship Him at a distance? vs. 1
2.  Let's review who Aaron, Nadab and Abihu are since the Lord has named them specifically as those He wants to come closer to His presence.  We learned in Exodus chapter 6 that Aaron was from the tribe of Levi and that this was the name of 2 of Aaron's sons.
  • Exodus 6:23 -
Note:  In the book of Leviticus, we will learn that these 2 sons offer strange fire to the Lord and are consumed, but for the time being, they are experiencing the presence of God with their father Aaron.
3.  Who was the only one that could actually come 'near' to the Lord at that time? vs. 2
4. Moses came back to the people and recounted to the people all the words of the Lord and all His ordinances.  What did all the people answer with one voice of unity? vs. 3
5. Moses wrote down all the words of the Lord.  What did he do the next morning at the foot of Mount Sinai? vs. 4
6.  What did Moses sent the young men of the sons of Israel to do on this altar he had built at the foot of the mountain? vs. 5
7.  What did Moses do with the blood that came from the animals that were sacrificed on that altar? vs. 6
8.  What did Moses do with the book that he had written from the Words of God called the Book of the Covenant and how did the people respond? vs. 7
9.  After this, what did Moses do with the blood and what did he say to them? vs. 8
Note:  After writing down the Words of God, Moses also makes an altar with 12 pillars for the twelve tribes. Sacrifices are made, and the blood is divided to sprinkle the people and the altar.  First, Moses reads the Book of the Covenant to them and the people agree to follow and obey all of the Words.  The first time we see the spilling of innocent blood as a sacrificial offering is when the Lord covers Adam & Eve with the garments of an animal after they had tried to cover themselves with their own effort of leaves after they had sinned.  The shedding of blood of the innocent and unblemished animals continued from generation to generation, as we see Abel offering the firstlings of his flock to God. Noah built an altar to the Lord after exiting the ark and sacrificed, then Abraham and Isaac offered a ram for a sacrifice.
10.  What does the Scripture tell us about the shedding of blood?  Comment on these verses:
  • Hebrews 9:22 -
11.  This was the first mention of the "blood of the covenant" since God has given the Old Covenant through Moses now and the people have agreed to obey it.  What are we told about the first (old) covenant in the New Testament?
  • Hebrews 9:18-20 -
12.  Later God will reveal to the prophet Jeremiah that the old covenant will not remain in effect, but will be replaced by God writing the laws within the hearts of His people rather than them trying to obey laws on stones.  Read and comment on these verses.
  • Jeremiah 31:31-33 -
13.  A new covenant was coming that would not require the obedience to the written law and animal's blood shed for atonement. Instead, God would have a people who had a conviction of sin in their hearts. God did make that new covenant in Jesus Christ. We are sanctified by the blood of Jesus. The covenant is ratified in His blood. Read these verses and make comments on them.
  • Luke 22:20 -
  • Hebrews 10:4-10 -
  • Hebrews 12:24 -
  • Hebrews 13:20-21 -
  • 1 Peter 1:2 -
  • 1 Peter 1:18-21
14.  When Moses, Aaron, Nadab, Abihu, and the 70 elders of Israel went up to be in God's presence from a distance, what did they see and what did they do even in His distant presence? vs.9-11
15.  How do they describe what they saw under His feet?  Ezekiel saw something similar.  How did he describe it?
  • Ezekiel 10:1 -
Back to Exodus 24
16.  Not only did they see God from a distance, but what else did they do? vs. 11  - Being in the presence of the Lord many times includes a meal, a covenant meal so to speak.  Look up these verses and comment.
  • 1 Corinthians 11:25 -
  • Revelation 3:20 -
  • Revelation 19:9 -
Back to Exodus 24
17.  The Lord called Moses to come up to Him on the mountain and remain there with Him.  What was the Lord going to give him? vs. 12  ... Who was the one who had written them?
18.  Who went up the mountain with Moses? vs. 13
19.  What did Moses say to the 70 elders? vs. 14
20.  Who did Moses leave in church for legal matters in his absence? vs. 14
Note:  This was not such a great idea since we will find that Aaron leads them into idol worship while Moses is gone for a length of time.
21.  What happened as Moses went up the mountain? vs. 15
22.  The glory of the Lord rested on Mt. Sinai and the cloud covered it.  How many days was it there?  vs.16
23.  What happened on the 7th day? vs.16
24.  What was the appearance of the "glory of the Lord" like to the eyes of the sons of Israel as they looked upon the mountain? vs. 17
25.  How long was Moses in the midst of the cloud on the mountain? vs. 18
For the next 7 chapters, we are going to read about the things that God would show to Moses and instruct him to share with the people during these 40 days and 40 nights he is on the mountain with God.

Application:
26.  Like Moses, we are invited to come into the very presence of God to meet with Him.  We are encouraged to come into the "Holy of Holies"; to enter through the veil of the Lord Jesus Christ.  His righteousness within us through our faith in Him as our mediator causes us to be able to approach the throne of God to find help in our time of need.  Just imagine that you are entering into the cloud; into the very presence of God; and you are able to not only worship at His feet, but to offer up your greatest needs to Him to receive grace and mercy in your time of need.  What will you offer to Him this day?
  • Hebrews 10:14-22 -
  • Hebrews 4:15,16 -
27.  Summarize the chapter and post a prayer if you would like.
