Bibleb

Luke Chapter 13 - Assignment

1. Read the Chapter Straight Through from your own Bible at home or from an online Bible website.

2. Read through again in sections broken down for you below and answer the questions if you would like to for help in meditating on the message.

3. Conclude with summarizing the verse that means the most to you and your thoughts and/or prayers.

Luke 13:1-9 - Call to Repent

1.  People reported to Jesus how Pilate had killed some from Galilee and mixed their blood with their sacrifices.  Jesus said they did not suffer this fate because they were greater sinners than others.  Jesus also referred to 18 people who had been killed by a tower in Siloam falling on them.  He asked "Do you think they are greater sinners than those living in Jerusalem?"

  • What state is every man in unless they repent of their sins according to Jesus in verse 5?

2.  Jesus told them a parable about a fig tree that had been planted but when the time came for fruit to be on it, it did not bear any fruit.

  • How long had the vineyard-keeper been looking for fruit to bear? (vs. 7)

This was the same length of time Jesus had been in public ministry to the people of Israel (Jerusalem) and they had not repented as to bear fruit for the Gospel as of yet.

3.  In the parable of the fig tree that was not bearing fruit, how do we see the grace of the vineyard-keeper in not destroying the tree yet?

  • How much longer would he give the tree to bear fruit?
  • How would he help it to become fruitful?

4.  Have you ever thought a person that had a tragedy happen in their life was being punished for their sin?  Why did you think like this?  Has anyone ever accused you of being under God's judgment when something bad has happened to you?  How did it make you feel?

5.  How would the words of Jesus in these verses help you begin to know how to answer these questions and how you might want to respond to tragedies from now on, whether in your own life or another's life?

6.  How is God's grace illustrated in the parable of the fig tree given in these verses?

Luke 13:10-17 - Healing on the Sabbath

While Jesus was teaching in the Jewish Synagogue one Sabbath day, he saw a woman there who needed healing.

  • 1.  How long had this woman been sick? vs. 11 -
  • 2.  What was this woman's illness caused by? vs. 11 -
  • 3.  How was her illness manifested?  What did she suffer from all these years?  vs. 11 -
  • 4.  What did Jesus say to her when he saw her in her condition that day? vs. 12 -
  • 5.  What happened when Jesus laid His hands upon the woman? vs. 13 -
  • 6.  How did the Synagogue official feel about this miracle and why did he feel this way? vs. 14
  • 7.  What did the Lord call this heart attitude in this official?  vs. 15

Jesus said the law keepers untie their own donkeys from the stall to walk to the watering hole and get water to drink on the Sabbath.  Why do they do this?  Because the water is essential to life itself.  Jesus is making the point that life in His name is essential, not something we can leave or take because of the day or the religion.

Jesus said this woman was a daughter of Abraham which would mean she was of the Jewish race.  He said to the religious man:  "Should she not be released from this bond on the Sabbath day?"

  • 8.  How did those who opposed the Lord feel at this time? vs. 17 -
  • 9.  What kind of response was the multitide as a whole giving Jesus ? vs. 17 -

Luke 13:18-20 - Parables of Mustard Seed and Leaven

In response to explaining that the Sabbath day was for helping others know Him, the essential element of life ... Jesus expressed a couple of parables in regard to the Kingdom of God.

1.  What parable did He use in vs. 18?

  • What did He compare the kingdom of God to? vs. 19 -
  • Althought the mustard 'seed' is the smallest of all seeds, what does it become after it is planted?  vs. 19 -
  • How do the birds of the air benefit from the outcome? vs. 19 -
  • How do you think that is like coming to know Jesus?

2.  What is the second parable He gives in vs. 20?

  • What does He compare the kingdom of God to?
  • What did the woman do with the leaven?
  • When was it revealed that the meal had leaven in it?
  • How do you think that is like coming to know Jesus or sharing Jesus with others?

Luke 13:22-35 - Teaching in the Villages

As Jesus was passing through one city and village to another, He was on His way to Jerusalem.  As He was going along, someone asked Him:  "Lord, are there just a few who are being saved?"

1.  How did Jesus answer him?

  • What should we strive for and why should we do it right away?  vs. 24-25 -

2.  Why will the Lord not let some in who are asking to come in after the door is shut?

  • Even though these people knew Him as a person, they did not know Him as Lord.  What will He say to them? vs. 25 - 27 -

These Jewish people who actually saw the Lord and His miracles will one day see their fathers of the Jewish race who believed in the Lord's Messiah and spoke of Him in prophecies ... those like Abraham, Issac, and Jacob ... but they will be weeping and gnashing their teeth, unable to be with them or the Lord.

They will see people coming from the east, the west, the north, and the south to recline at the table with God in His kingdom, but they will not be able to participate because they did not believe in the day of their visitation.

  • Have you believed in the day of His visitation with You?
  • As His Spirit has drawn You to believe, are you believing in His Name and confessing His Name?
  • Will the door be opened to you?  How do you know?

As Jesus was speaking these words, a Pharisee told him to leave because Herod was wanting to kill Him.  Jesus told him to tell Herod (calling him a fox) that He would continue to cast out demons and perform cures but that He would reach His goal on the 3rd day.  He said He surely would perish like the other prophets inside Jerusalem.

3. What did Jesus say Jerusalem had done to all the prophets sent to her from God? vs. 34 -

  • As God, Jesus saw the nation do this each time.  What did He long to do with the Jewish race over and over again? vs. 34 -
  • Why didn't He? vs. 34 -
  • Since they would not receive Him, what would happen to them for the time being?  vs. 35 -
  • When would they see Him again with eyes of faith to believe in Him as a nation?  vs. 35 -

Do you know how often Jesus has longed to gather you under His wings of protection and love?  Are you refusing Him that right?  Would you come to Him today?
