Luke 19:11-27 - Parable of Money Usage

While the crowd and the religious community listened to these things, Jesus went on to tell them a parable BECAUSE He was near Jerusalem and they SUPPOSED the kingdom of God was going to appear IMMEDIATELY.  Therefore, He gave them a parable to help them understand that it was not coming immediately.

He said that a certain nobleman went to a distant country to receive a kingdom for himseld, and then return.  He called 10 of his slaves and gave them 10 minas (a mina is equal to 100 days' wages or nearly $20).  He told the 10 slaves to do business with the 10 minas until he came back to them.

  • What did the citizens of that country do to the nobleman and why? vs. 14 -

After this man received his kingdom, he returned to this country and ordered the slaves he had entrusted with the money to give account of what they had done with it.

  • What did the first slave say when the Master appeared? vs. 16 -
  • What did he say to his slave in regard to this? vs. 17 -

  • What did he say to his slave in regard to this? vs. 19 -
  • When another of the slaves came to him, he said he did not invest the mina, but put it away in a handkerchief instead.  Why did he not want to invest for his master's profit? vs. 21 -
  • What did he say to this slave in regard to this? vs. 22,23 -
  • What did the master instruct the bystanders to do with the mina that this one had hidden? vs. 24 -
  • Why do you think it was given to the one it was given to as you think back on the various responses?
  • How did the bystanders feel about this reward system? vs. 25 -
  • What did Jesus answer them? vs. 26 -
  • How do you feel about it?  Do you think it is fair that the one who works harder to invest more for the master should be rewarded greater?

He had a larger responsiblity and was faithful in it.  His work is more and yet He was faithful in it.  The one who hid it, had that gift, but didn't want it and didn't respect it or the One who gave it to him.  Every man is offered the free gift of salvation, but if that person does not want it, then what was intended for them will even be taken away.

  • What are you doing to invest in the Master's work since you have been freely given the gift of salvation and forgiveness?
  • Do you feel that He has entrusted you with much or little?
  • How are you handling that responsiblity?

What did Jesus say to do with the bystanders who did not want the master to rule over them? vs. 27 -

  • The owners asked them why they were taking the colt.  What did they tell them as Jesus had instructed them to? vs.31-32 -

They brought the colt to Jesus, spreading their own garments on it for Him to sit upon.  Others were spreading their garments before Jesus as He rode on the road.

  • When He was approading the descent of the Mount of Olives, what did the whole multitude of disciples do and why? vs. 37 -

They cried out:  "Blessed is the King who comes in the Name of the Lord!  Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!"

  • What did some of the Pharisees ask Jesus to do in regard to His disciples? vs. 39 -
  • How did Jesus answer them? vs. 40 -
