Luke 14:1-6 - Jesus Heals on the Sabbath Jesus went into the house of one of the leaders of the Pharisees on the Sabbath day to eat bread. They were all watching Him closely.
Jesus asked the lawyers and the Pharisees a question, "Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath or not?" They kept silent and did not answer Him.

Luke 14:7-15 - Parable of the Guests After Jesus healed this man on the Sabbath in the house of this leader of the Pharisees, He told the guests there a parable because He noticed that they were picking out places of honor at the table to sit at. He said that when invited to a wedding feast, we should not take the place of honor.
Instead, when you are invited to a special occasion, you should go and recline at the last place.
Jesus turned His attention to the one who had invited Him to his house that day. He gave him a word of wisdom we can all learn from.
One person reclining at the table with Jesus heard this spoken by Him and said "Blessed is everyone who shall eat bread in the kingdom of God!" (vs.15) |
Luke 14:16-24 - Parable of the Dinner Jesus had just heard a person say that everyone who ate bread in the kingdom of God was blessed (vs.15). He told him a parable regarding the dinner which many think is referring to the Marriage Supper of the Lamb mentioned in Revelation.
Back to the parable of the 'certain man' giving a 'big dinner in Luke 14:
When the slave came back to report to his master how the ones invited had excuses 'not to come', it made the head of the household angry.
What lessons do you learn from this parable of the dinner?

Luke 14:25-34 - Discipleship Tested Great multitudes were going along with Jesus as He taught and performed miracles. He narrowed the crowd down with some strong statements about what it means to be a true follower of Him. He said that a person must hate their own relatives and even their own life to be His disciple. The word hate means "in comparison of our love for Him". It means that we would not put another family member's opinion or demands above our love and allegiance to Him.
Before building a tower, a person would calculate how much it would cost to build it to see if they had enough money to complete it.
When a king sets out for battle, he takes counsel whether his 10,000 men are strong enough to encounter the 20,000 coming against him. If not, he will send a delegation and ask for peace. The Christian life is a life of warfare. Our enemy has many tactics and plans and people that will come against us. We don't want to make peace with our enemy, but we want to stand and fight him.
In conclusion of Luke 14, Jesus mentions how salt can become "tasteless" and then it is no longer any good for the purpose that it was created, so it is thrown out. If we will count the cost of being His disciple, He will strengthen us each day for the task by His Holy Spirit and we will be the salt and the light we are created to be for Him. Too many follow Him, as the crowds did, for what He can do for them, whether it be popularity, healing, or whatever. That is not why we should follow the Lord. We should realize that a life identified with Him can bring enmity with family members and definitely a life of battles against the enemy of God, the devil and his angels. The road of a discipleship of Jesus is the road less traveled and many times a hard road to walk.
