Luke 14:1-6 - Jesus Heals on the Sabbath

Jesus went into the house of one of the leaders of the Pharisees on the Sabbath day to eat bread.  They were all watching Him closely.

  • Who did Jesus observe right in front of Him and what was wrong with him? vs. 2 -

Jesus asked the lawyers and the Pharisees a question, "Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath or not?"  They kept silent and did not answer Him.

  • What did Jesus do for the man at that point? vs. 4 -
  • What did Jesus say to these religious Jewish men about this? vs. 5
  • How did the leaders respond to Him? vs. 6 -

Luke 14:7-15 - Parable of the Guests

After Jesus healed this man on the Sabbath in the house of this leader of the Pharisees, He told the guests there a parable because He noticed that they were picking out places of honor at the table to sit at.

He said that when invited to a wedding feast, we should not take the place of honor.

  • What is the reason He gives? vs.8-9

Instead, when you are invited to a special occasion, you should go and recline at the last place.

  • What is the reason He gives? vs. 10
  • What happens to everyone who exalts themselves? vs. 11
  • What happens to those who remain humble? vs. 11

Jesus turned His attention to the one who had invited Him to his house that day.  He gave him a word of wisdom we can all learn from.

  • Who should not be invited to the luncheons or dinners we take such time to make special? Why or why not? vs. 12 -
  • Who should we invite to our well prepared events of blessing? vs. 13 -
  • When will we be rewarded for such acts of kindness? vs. 14 -

One person reclining at the table with Jesus heard this spoken by Him and said "Blessed is everyone who shall eat bread in the kingdom of God!" (vs.15)

Luke 14:16-24 - Parable of the Dinner

Jesus had just heard a person say that everyone who ate bread in the kingdom of God was blessed (vs.15).  He told him a parable regarding the dinner which many think is referring to the Marriage Supper of the Lamb mentioned in Revelation.

  • Revelation 19:5-10 - Who is at the dinner described here?  What are they doing and what are they receiving?

Back to the parable of the 'certain man' giving a 'big dinner in Luke 14:

  • What happened when the dinner invitation came to those invited? vs. 18
  • What did the first one say? vs. 18 -
  • What did the second one say? vs. 19 -
  • What did the next one say? vs. 20 -

When the slave came back to report to his master how the ones invited had excuses 'not to come', it made the head of the household angry.

  • What did he instruct the slave to do at this point? vs. 21 -
  • What great report did the slave come back to give him? vs. 22 -
  • Therefore, the master told him to go along the highways and hedges and compel them to come in so that his house would be full!  Who would not get to taste his dinner? vs. 24 -

What lessons do you learn from this parable of the dinner?

Luke 14:25-34 - Discipleship Tested

Great multitudes were going along with Jesus as He taught and performed miracles.  He narrowed the crowd down with some strong statements about what it means to be a true follower of Him.  He said that a person must hate their own relatives and even their own life to be His disciple.  The word hate means "in comparison of our love for Him".  It means that we would not put another family member's opinion or demands above our love and allegiance to Him.

  • What must we carry in order to be His disciple? vs. 27
  • What do you believe that means to you at this time in your life?

Before building a tower, a person would calculate how much it would cost to build it to see if they had enough money to complete it.

  • What would people do if you began to build a tower and never finished it? vs. 29-30 -
  • Have you seen a person or been the person who did not count the cost of following the Lord and stopped before the walk was complete?

When a king sets out for battle, he takes counsel whether his 10,000 men are strong enough to encounter the 20,000 coming against him.  If not, he will send a delegation and ask for peace.

The Christian life is a life of warfare.  Our enemy has many tactics and plans and people that will come against us.  We don't want to make peace with our enemy, but we want to stand and fight him.

  • Are you preparing for battle by renewing your mind daily in God's Word?
  • Who is your enemy according to Ephesians 6:10-12 -
  • What part does knowing the Bible play in your warfare as a Christian? Ephesians 6:13-17 -

In conclusion of Luke 14, Jesus mentions how salt can become "tasteless" and then it is no longer any good for the purpose that it was created, so it is thrown out.  If we will count the cost of being His disciple, He will strengthen us each day for the task by His Holy Spirit and we will be the salt and the light we are created to be for Him.  Too many follow Him, as the crowds did, for what He can do for them, whether it be popularity, healing, or whatever.  That is not why we should follow the Lord.  We should realize that a life identified with Him can bring enmity with family members and definitely a life of battles against the enemy of God, the devil and his angels.  The road of a discipleship of Jesus is the road less traveled and many times a hard road to walk.

  • Are you willing to pick up your cross and follow Him today?
  • Have you counted the cost?
  • Are you prepared for battle?
  • Will you be salt and light for Him today?
  • How will you prepare and be aware of your commitment this day to follow Him?

Luke Chapter 14 - Conclusion

  • Can you summarize what you learned today?
  • Do you have a verse you want to commit to memory in your heart from today?
  • What is your final thoughts and or prayers concerning this chapter?
