Luke Chapter 17 - Assignment

1.Read the Chapter Straight Through from your own Bible at home or from an online Bible website.

2. Read through again in sections broken down for you below and answer the questions if you would like to for help in meditating on the message.

3. Conclude with summarizing the verse that means the most to you and your thoughts and/or prayers.

Luke 17:1-10 - Instructions In Living

Jesus continued talking with His disciples, telling them about people who cause other people to 'stumble' in their faith.  He called them stumbling blocks.  He acknowledged that it was inevitable that it would happen in life, but he gave a stern warning to those who would cause "a little one" to stumble.  He may have meant a young child or a young Christian of faith or a weaker person in character.

  • Whoever he meant by "little one", it is clear what the condition of the one who 'caused the stumble' would be.  What would be better for them than what their judgment would be? vs. 2 -
  • What are ways that you can think of that would make a young Christian or young person stumble in their faith?

Jesus went on to tell the disciples to be on their guard!  It sounds serious...What is the instruction here?  It has to do with being the one who is "sinned against".

  • What are we to do when a brother sins against us? vs. 3 -
  • If he repents of his sin, what are we to do? vs. 3 -
  • But what if ... he sins again ... even 7 times in one day ... but comes back to say "I repent".  What then ? vs. 4 -
  • Why do you think we need to be on guard about this?  How hard do you think this is to follow?
  • What do the disciples immediately ask the Lord when they hear this hard instruction? vs. 5 -

Jesus told a story to help them understand having faith and a continual grateful heart.

  • If they had faith even as small as a tiny mustard seed, what would that faith enable them to do? vs. 6 -
  • Realizing this, should we pray that the Lord increase our faith?

Jesus gives the example of a worker who comes in from the field of his master tending sheep or plowing the field.  He says that the worker does not immediately sit down for his own meal, but prepares himself in proper clothing and serves his master before he eats and drinks himself.  The master does not 'thank' the servant for doing what is expected (commanded) of him.

  • Therefore, when we are commanded to do such things as not make another stumble or forgive another seven times a day ... rather than argue about that with the Lord or complain among ourselves, what should our response to His commandments be? vs. 10 -
  • By having such obedient spirits and willing hearts for our master, refusing to murmur or complain about serving Him and forgiving each other, what effect will it have on the world we live in and the people we are witnessing to?  Read Philippians 2:12-16 to give insight into how to answer this.

Luke 17:11-21 - Ten Lepers Cleansed, But..

Jesus and His disciples continued walking toward Jerusalem.  When they were passing between Samaria and Galilee, He entered a certain village.  Ten leprous men who stood at a distance met Him, raising their voices, saying "Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!"

  • What did Jesus instruct these 10 lepers to do?
  • What happened on their way of being obedient to this command?

Out of the 10, only 1 came back to thank Jesus. He was a Samaritan.

  • What did he do when he realized he had been healed? vs. 15, 16 -
  • What did Jesus ask about the other nine? vs. 17-18 -
  • What did Jesus tell this one who returned to Him with a grateful heart? vs. 19 -

The Pharisees questioned Jesus as to when the kingdom of God was coming.  Jesus said it was not coming with signs to be observed so that a person would say "Look, here it is" or "Look there it is" ....where was the kingdom of God at that very moment? vs. 21 -

  • Has Jesus cleansed you from your past?  Has He healed you of your sins and saved you?  Has He brought deliverance(s) into your life?
  • Have you been at His feet lately thanking Him?  How about doing that right now?
  • No matter what we are going through, how should our heart be toward our Master? Read 1 Thessalonians 5:12-18 for insight into how to answer this.

Luke 17:22-37 - Second Coming Foretold

From this point of speaking about the Kingdom of God not being observed with signs but having the Kingdom of God there with them at that moment ..... Jesus began to share with His disciples about future days ahead.

  • What will people long to see in the days to come and not see it? vs. 22
  • When signs happen and people say "look there, look here"...what does Jesus say His followers should not do? vs. 23
  • His Second Coming will be quite an event that will not be missed by anyone.  How did He describe it to them?  What would it be like? vs. 24 -

Jesus wanted His disciples to know and pass on to the generations to come the things that would happen before His glorious second coming to earth.

  • What would first happen to Him, their Master and Teacher, the Messiah? vs. 25 -
  • What would the days on earth become like before His second return back to earth? vs. 26-27 -
  • What place does He compare the way the world will be like before His second coming? vs. 28-29 -
  • How do we know that it what Jesus is referring to?  What does He plainly say in vs. 30 -
  • Using a concordance or Bible tools, explain what it was like in Noah's time when God destroyed the earth.  Also explain what it was like in Sodom when God rained fire down to destroy that place.  After making note of these times, how do they compare with the times we live in right now?  Can you see that we are closer in our generation to His coming than anytime before us?

Jesus wants His disciples to know and pass on to others living in those days to come some instructions.  They are not to go back inside their homes to get any possession or come back to their homes from their work in the field because according to Scripture throughout the Bible, we know that Jerusalem will come under seige and that nations will come against them.

According to Matthew's gospel account, he shares how Jesus then tells them in this discourse to 'run to the hills of Judea' and we know from Daniel and Revelation's prophetic words, God will have a place prepared for the remnant of the Jews for 3 years during the tyranny and persecution of the anti-christ against the Jewish nation.  On the night this all breaks forth, one man will be taken from a bed and the other left; one will be taken from the field and the other left.

The disciples ask Him "Where will this happen?"  His answer to them is:  "Where the body is, there also the vultures will be gathered." (vs.37) - Most believe this to be the Battle of Armageddon, the last great battle fought among the nations against the nation of Israel in the valley of Megeddo spoken about in prophecy.  The believing Jews looking for their Messiah must know they do not need to hesitate when these things start, but they need to run to the mountains and be cared for by God.

  • Read Matthew 24 for more insight into this.

Application:

  • How do the times we live in compare to the days of Noah and the environment of Sodom before it was destroyed?
  • How can we be like Noah's family who continued to preach and live a righteous life in the midst of all this violence?
  • Read these verses and take note from them what you can expect from others who live among you and how you can hold on and make it through these times:
    • 2 Peter 2:1-9 -
    • 2 Peter 3:1-9 -
    • 2 Peter 3:10-18 -

Luke Chapter 17 - Conclusion

  • Can you summarize what you learned today?
  • Do you have a verse you want to commit to memory in your heart from today?
  • What is your final thoughts and or prayers concerning this chapter?
