Leviticus Worksheet ~ Leviticus, Chapter 19

Review & Intro: To be holy is to be sanctified, set apart. Holiness means not being like the world, but being like our God. Holiness means denying the temporary pleasures of sin and investing in eternity through righteous living.  Holiness. Nobody talks much about it, for fear of being called a legalist. But God requires holiness of His people.

Leviticus Chapter 19

1.  What was Moses to speak to all the congregation of the sons of Israel? vs.1,2

2.  The apostle Peter quotes this verse in his epistle.  Let's read the context and see the quote together.  Comment on the verses below:

  • 1 Peter 1-13-19

3.  Paul also spoke about holiness.  Comment on what he had to say about it on the verse below:

  • 2 Corinthians 7:1

4.  Back to Leviticus 19.  In the context of holiness, what is the first thing Moses reminds the people about?  vs.3a

5.  We live in a culture who for the most part do not honor their parents as they should.  Comment on the following verses and evaluate our culture today:

  • Ephesians 6:1-3
  • 2 Timothy 3:1-5

6.  Back to Leviticus 19.  What is the second thing that Moses reminds the people about in the context of holiness? vs. 3b

7.  There is instruction about the Sabbath days in the New Testament as well.  Comment on the verses below and share how you believe we honor this commandment today.

  • Hebrews 4:9,10
  • Hebrews 10:23-25
  • Romans 14:5-12

8.  Back to Leviticus 19.  What does Moses remind them about concerning idols? vs. 4

9.  What does the New Testament say about the sin of "idolatry"?  Comment on these verses.

  • 2 Corinthians 6:14-18
  • 1 Thessalonians 1:9,10
  • Colossians 3:5
  • 1 John 5:21

10.  Moses reminds the people about the regulations for the Peace Offerings.  Remember, these were voluntary and a form of thanksgiving to the Lord.  What does he remind them concerning eating the bread offerings they gave to Him in worship? vs.5-8

11.  The Lord had a wonderful way to take care of the needy and the strangers in the culture they lived in.  Name 3 ways they took care of them.  vs.9-10

12.  Moses begins to give them things they are "not" to do, and it is like he is listing the 10 commandments for them again; just with more details and directions.  Name the "shall nots" and any description given with them from the verses below:

  • vs.11 - 3 things
  • vs.12 - 2 things
  • vs.13 - 3 things
  • vs.14 - 3 things
  • vs.15 - 4 things
  • vs.16 - 2 things
  • vs.17 - 2 things
  • vs.18 - 3 things

13.  Why are they to do all of these things? vs.18b

14.  What did the Lord tell the sons of Israel not to "mix together"?  vs.19 - Name 3 items mentioned.

15.  Although those rules seem crazy in the culture we now live in, God teaches separation and that we are not to "mix" in several situations in the New Testament.  Let's review and comment on the verses below:

  • 2 Corinthians 6:14-16 -
  • James 3:9-10 -
  • 1 Corinthians 10:21 -
  • Luke 16:13 -
  • Revelation 3:15,16 -

16.  Back to Leviticus 19.  I do not understand vs.20; how there could ever be a situation where a woman was taken as a slave or touched by anyone, whether she was redeemed or not, but the culture was different and I simply read and keep going when it is more than I can digest at times.  I think of the following verse by David.  Write it out if you would like.

  • Psalm 131:1-3

17.  Back to Leviticus 19.  I take comfort that the man would be punished for taking advantage of the slave (vs.20) and that he would have to bring a guilt offering for what he had done. (vs.21) ... Once atonement was made for him, what would the Lord do concerning his sin? vs. 22

18.  The Lord wanted Moses to prepare the sons of Israel for when they would be entering the land of Promise.  When they arrived there, they were to plant all kinds of trees for food.  They were not to eat of the fruit of the trees for 3 years. (vs.23).  They were to offer all the fruit to the Lord in the 4th year (vs.24).  What did they get to finally enjoy in the 5th year and beyond? vs. 25 -

19.  Moses reminds them again that they are not to eat anything with the blood. (vs.26)  What practices were they told to never be involved with? vs. 26 - Name 2

20.  Back to Leviticus 19.  What did the Lord tell them in regard to their beards and the growth on the side of their heads? vs. 27 ... (don't you see the orthodox Jews today and how they still have this look?) ...

21.  What did the Lord tell them concerning cuts in their body for the dead or tattoo marks? vs. 28

Note:  Who would ever make their daughter a harlot as it says in verse 29?  Yet, the Lord wanted to be sure they understood they were not to be like the pagan cultures around them.  In the occult practices, they would do the things mentioned in the verses above - 1) offer their hair in honor of their gods .. 2) cut or tatoo themselves to mourn their dead .. 3) and make their daughters into temple prostitutes as offerings to their gods.  God is saying to them that His sanctuary is to be revered and is not a place for sexual or occultic practices.

22.  They were to keep His sabbaths and revere His sanctuary (vs. 30) .. What were they forbideen to seek out and be defiled by? vs. 31 - Name 2 things

23.  How were they to treat the grayheaded and aged among them? vs. 32

24.  How were they to treat strangers residing in their land? vs. 33

25.  What were they to remember in regard to how they treated strangers in the land? vs.34

26.  When measuring things, they were to have 'just' weights for everyone; showing no partiality.  (vs.35,36)

27.  Why were they to obey His statutes and His ordinances? vs. 37

Application:

28.  Here is a good way to summarize this chapter.

  • 1)  Our motivation to live a holy lifestyle is because God is Holy and we desire to be like Him...
  • 2)  We manifest His holiness to the world by honoring our parents ... keeping the Lord's Day ... worshiping the one true God in the way He commands ... and caring for the poor among us. ...
  • 3) To love our neighbor as ourselves, we refrain from theft, false dealing, and lies.  We don't oppress our neighbor, mistreat the handicapped, be partial in legal justice, slander, harm, hate, or have vengeance against others. ...
  • 4) We manifest His holiness by separating ourselves from all forms of cultic practices in our culture that would not bring Him glory and honor.  We don't seek mediums, fortune-tellers, or be involved with magic practices.  Our needs are met through God alone.  The Bible is our guide.  ... and
  • 5) To honor God, we honor the elderly among us ... we love the strangers and neighbors as ourselves ... and we are just in our dealings with others.

29.  Look up these verses in the New Tesament which confirm the way we are to live to bring honor to God's Holiness.

  • Matthew 5:16
  • Philippians 2:14,15
  • 1 Peter 2:9
  • 1 Peter 2:12

30.  Summarize this lesson and post a prayer if you would like.
