17.  How did Jesus instruct us in regard to this situation? Comment on the verses below:

Matt. 5:38-39 -

Note:  Is Jesus negating the Law? Is He contradicting the Law? No. What we just read in Leviticus 24 is a perfect picture of justice. What we just read in Matthew 5 is a perfect picture of mercy. Fair justice dictates that a man gets what he deserves. Mercy dictates that a man doesn't get what he deserves. God told us what justice is, then told us that we should walk in mercy. (wow)

18.  Who did this apply to other than the sons of Israel themselves? vs. 22

19.  How did Moses and the sons of Israel obey the command of the Lord concerning the one who had blasphemed and cursed the Lord? vs. 23

Application:

 20.  The high priest was to "keep the light burning" and it was never to go out.  We know that Jesus is the Light of the World and that we were told by Jesus we are the lights of the world as well; a city on a hill that cannot be hidden.  Sometimes our wick can get dim because we are lacking fellowship or accountability in the Word and Prayer.  How can we keep our light burning brightly?  ..... First of all, the source of light was the olive oil.  This represents the Holy Spirit of God.  He is the One that is light and by being filled with His presence, we shine forth His light.  We are told to be continually filled with His Spirit, which will keep the light burning in our hearts and through our lives.  Comment on the verse below:

  • Read Ephesians 5:8-20 ... How are we to be continually filled with His Spirit? (vs.18-20)

21. How do we continue to be filled and to keep the light burning? Comment on the following verses as you think about that.

  • Who is the light of all men? ... John 1:1-9
  • Who is the light of the world? ... John 8:1
  • What are Christians to be? ... Matthew 5:14
  • What are the results of "walking in the light"? ... 1 John 1:7 -
  • What should we "kindle afresh"? ... 2 Timothy 1:6 -
  • How does fellowship with believers keep our "light" burning? ...Hebrews 3:13 -
  • .... and also ... Hebrews 10:23-25 -
  • How should we "strengthen" our hearts? ... Hebrews 13:9 -
  • What should we be "fervent" about? ... 1 Peter 4:8 -
  • What is a "lamp" shining in a "dark place"? ... 2 Peter 2:19 -
  • How can we "build up" our faith? ... Jude 1:20 -
  • What are we to keep oursleves in? ... Jude 1:21 -
  • How do we follow His light? ... Psalm 119:105 -
  • How can our light give hope to others? ... Matthew 5:16;
  • How do we appear as lights in the world? ...Philippians 2:14-15.

22.  The priests were to keep the 12 loaves of bread out on the golden table and change them into fresh bread every Sabbath day.  The loaves were for the priests to eat during the week in a holy place.  Jesus called Himself the Bread of Life.  He said that we could eat of Him and forever be satisfied.  The Word of God is our daily manna from heaven.  Jesus is the Word of God and He is the bread of life.  We need to eat of the bread of the Word daily and also keep that weekly time of worship to recharge and refresh ourselves.  Comment on the following verses.

  • God was present in the Bread they ate. - See Exodus 25:30 ...  - What was the bread called?
  • What did God say about bread in  ... Deuteronomy 8:3 -
  • What did Jesus call Himself? ... John 6:35
  • What would happen to those who eat or partake of this bread; of Him? ... John 6:58
  • What did the Lord call the bread at His last Supper with His disciples?  ... Matthew 26:26-

grace-and-mercy

 23.  It was difficult for me as I am sure many of you to read of the stoning of this bi-racial young man whose father was an Egyptian and whose mother was an Israelite from the tribe of Dan.  Somehow I felt he was identifying more with the Egyptian concept of many gods and not believing that the God of Israel was the only God and the One to be feared and respected.  The motivation of mercy in me wanted him to be given another chance, a chance to repent, to be forgiven.  We must realize that God's purpose in the Law was to show what He demands because of His Holiness.  This young man had been taught that as he traveled with his Israelite family in the wilderness with his mother.  He, along with the others, had witnessed the Shekina Glory of God hovering in the cloud by day and fire by night.  He had heard the 10 commandments and knew that He was not to take the Lord's name in vain.  When he blasphemed, it was with intent to harm the Name and reputation of the Lord; it was unbelief and it was mockery.  If we do not understand the Holiness Code of the Law, we will not understand our need for Grace and Mercy.  Grace is there when we don't deserve it and can't earn it.  Mercy is there when we need it because we are unable to help ourselves.  By knowing that we break the Law, we know that we need a Redeemer to set us free from the Law.  I pray that we will all realize that grace does not give us license to sin, but strength to overcome and start over again.  I am so glad that His mercies are new every morning.  Great is His faithfulness.  Comment on the following verses about His grace and mercy.

  • Acts 20:32 -
  • 2 Peter 3:18 -
  • Colossians 1:6 -
  • Lamentations 3:22,23 -
  • Romans 6:1,2 -

24.  The Law of Moses said that the punishment should fit the crime.  If a person took an eye, they should lose an eye, etc.  Jesus taught in the Beautitudes of Matthew chapter 5 that we should look at things differently.  Let's look at some verses below including ones by Peter and Paul.  Please comment on these.

  • Matthew 5:38-45 -
  • 1 Peter 3:9 -
  • 1 Thessalonians 5:15 -
  • Romans 12:21 -

25.  Blessed be the Name of our Lord. \o/ ... God’s name represents His character and reputation.  Blasphemy is the intentional expression of contempt for God, His character, and His Word.  It is a serious offense against God.  Job's wife knew that cursing God would result in death. (see Job 2:9).  Rather than be stoned at our first offense of blasphemy against our Lord and Creator, Jesus said that blasphemy against the Father or the Son is sin we can receive forgiveness for.  Comment on the verse below:

  • Matthew 12:31,32 -

26.  How did the Pharisees blaspeme the Holy Spirit?  Read the context of the verse and write out how they blasphemed.

  • Matthew 12:22-32 -

27.  What does the apostle Paul confess that he was before becoming a follower of Jesus Christ?

  • 1 Timothy 1:12-15 -

28.  How should the Lord's Name be treated?

  • Psalm 34:3 -
  • Philippians 2:9-11 -
  • 2 Thessalonians 1:12  -

29.  For those who have trusted in Him, the name of God is the object of our praise, which will be our eternal occupation in heaven!

  • Revelation 4:11 -
  • Revelation 5:11-14 -

 30.  Summarize the lesson and post a prayer if you would like.
