Numbers Chapter 5 - Observation Quesitons

1.  Where did the Lord have the sons of Israel send those who had leprosy, or a discharge, or had been made unclean because of touching a dead person? vs. 1-4

2.  Why did they do this whether male or female? vs. 3

3.  As we talked about in Leviticus, the unclean were a picture of sin not being able to be in the presence of God, but Jesus touched the unclean and made them whole.  He showed Himself to be the mediator between sinful man and the the holiness of God, being both man and God.  Comment on the following verses for review.  Name what Jesus touched and cleansed in each situation and notice, He didn't become "unclean"; they became "clean"!

  • Luke 5:12,13 -
  • Luke 8: 43-48 -
  • Luke 8: 49-56 -

Note:  Did you see the leper, the discharge, and touching the dead in these accounts of Jesus with the people?  He does not become unclean by them, but they are made clean and healed by Him.  He is the answer to our uncleanness.  Amen.

4.  When a man or woman committed a sin against another person, who were they acting unfaithful toward foremost? vs. 6

5.  What did David say when praying to the Lord about the sin he had committed against Bathsheba and her husband Uriah?

  • Psalm 51:1-4

6.  Back to Numbers 5.  Not only did the person need to confess their sins, and bring the ram to the priest to atone for his sin, but he had to make restitution to the person he had wronged.  He was to pay what he owed and add 1/5th or 20% to it. (vs.7,8) ...If the person was no longer alive, the restitution was to be made to a relative, and if that was not possible, it was to be brought to the priest to the house of the Lord. (vs.8-10).  Remember what Jesus said about remembering at the altar your brother had something against you?  What were you to do immediately before making an offering to God?

  • Matthew 5:23,24 -

7.  What does confession and repentance bring to us?

  • Acts 3:19 -

8.  The Lord addressed a spirit of jealousy after this with Moses.  What was a man to do if he suspected that his wife had been unfaithful to him? vs.11-15

9.  The grain offering was not to have oil or frankincense added to it because it would not be a sweet aroma.  What kind of reminder would an "offering of jealousy" be? vs.15

10.  The priest would bring the woman near and have her stand before the Lord. (vs.16).  This would bring fear and trembling in itself.  He would take some of the water set aside for the priest, which was holy, put it inside an earthenware vessel.  What would he mix with it before having her drink it? vs. 17

11.  Her hair was to go loose as she stood before the Lord and she was to hold the grain offering of memorial of iniquity in her hands.  The priest would hold the "water of bitterness" that would bring a curse upon her if she was truly guilty. (vs. 18) ..

12.  What would make her immune to the curse of the water? vs. 19

13.  If she had been unfaithful to her husband, what would happen to her when she drank the water? vs. 20-21-

14.  What was the woman to say? vs. 22 -

15.  The priest would write the curses on a scroll and then wash them off into the water of bitterness (before she had taken a drink....vs.23) ... Then he would make her drink the water that would bring a curse and cause bitterness in her stomach. (vs.24) ... First, however, the priest would then take the grain offering of jealousy from the woman's hand and wave it before the Lord.  Then he brought it to the altar. (vs.25)  What did he do with the handful of grain offering at that time? vs. 26

16.  When the priest made the woman drink the water, what would happen if she had truly been unfaithful to her husband? vs. 27

17.  If the woman was innocent and had not been defiled, what effect would the water have on her? vs. 28

18.  The man could bring his wife for this testing and he himself would not bear any guilt for suspecting her if he had been unable to let go of his jealousy for any reason. (vs.29-31)  .. If she was guilty, she would bear her guilt.  This would mean being cut off from her people and so much more.  It's hard not to think of the adulterous woman that was "caught in the very act" which required "stoning" under the law in Jesus' day.  How did Jesus handle her situation?

  • John 8:3-11

Application:

19.  This entire chapter has really been about "uncleanness" and "sin against others".  We saw the unclean leper and others unclean by discharge and touching the dead having to go "outside of the camp" because they could defile others and also because sin and defilement could not dwell with God in the camp.  Then we had those who had wronged their neighbor being told they not only needed to confess and make it right, but add 20% to the person they had wronged.  If the person was no longer alive, they made restitution to a relative, and if there was not a relative, they gave the money and the interest to the priest; to the work of the Lord.  Then... we saw the suspicion of a woman who had defiled herself and her marriage, and the test for "jealousy" that had come into the heart of her husband.  What are we told about marriage and defilement in the New Testament?

  • Hebrews 13:4 -

20.  The woman drank a bitter cup to show whether she was clean or unclean.  Jesus drank a bitter cup, but it was our "uncleanness" that He drank.  Remember the struggle He had in the garden of Gethsemane before He went to the cross when He asked the Father ... "If possible let this cup pass from Me." ... What was in the cup?  It was the sin(s) of all mankind that He would take into His completely holy body.  He would be separated from the Father for the first time in all eternity because God cannot dwell with sin.  He would cry out on the cross "My God, My God, Why Has Thou Forsaken Me?" ... He was forsaken because He drank the bitterness of all that sin upon Himself.  He went to the cross for us, but when He came out of the tomb, He had overcome death and overcome sin.  Praise His Name!  He was not unclean; He remained clean!  He drank the "wrath of God" and still He came out "clean"!  This is the only reason why we can confess our sins and become clean because He gives us righteousness; His righteousness for our uncleanness!  Praise His Name!  Comment on the verse below and end this lesson with prayer and praise !!

  • 1 John 1:9 -

21.  Summarize the lesson and post a prayer if you would like.
