Leviticus Worksheet ~ Leviticus Chapter 22

Intro:  This chapter continues the section of the Book of Leviticus that pertains to regulations regarding the priests.  The ceremonial perfection was a picture of Jesus, the One who would be pure and blameless and present us before God.  We may feel that God is too strict or even without mercy, but remember that when Jesus came in the New Testament, He sought out those who were ceremonially unclean and brought healing and wholeness to them.  It is beautiful to see the Holiness of the Lord and then the Mercy that came through the Lord Jesus Christ to us all.  They are the same - yesterday, today, and forever.  There was a reason for ceremonial perfection in the temple, but also to point the way to our merciful High Priest Jesus who would help in time of need.  Let's look at some of those verses as an introduction to this lesson:

3.  What "afflictions" could keep the priests from being able to eat the sacred offerings? vs.4-8 - Name 6 things -

7.  How are we cleansed from all unrighteousness today?

  • 1 John 1:9 -

Note: To serve in uncleanliness would profane the holy ministry. If you are someone who ministers to others, you should make sure your life is clean before the Lord as well. We need to confess our sins and strive at living a holy life if we are ministering to others and representing His Name to them.

8.  Who could not share in a meal with the priest's food from the sacred offerings? vs. 10-13 - Name 4

9.  Who besides the priest's family could eat the sacred offerings? vs.11-13 - Name 3

10.  What could be done if a sacred offering was eaten by mistake? vs. 14

11.  The Lord reminds Moses to remind the priests and the people about burnt offerings. (vs.17,18)  What male animals were accepted and what did their condition need to be? vs. 19,20

12.  When a man offered peace offerings to fulfill a special vow .. or .. for a freewill offering (thanksgiving), whether it came from the herd or the flock, what did the condition of the animal have to be? vs. 21

13.  The Lord gives 6 things that would not be acceptable in the animal's condition for an offering.  What were the 6 things mentioned? vs. 22

14.  An ox or a lamb that had an overgrown or stunted member could be presented for a freewill offering.  What would it not be accepted for? vs. 23

15.  If there was anything wrong with the testicles of an animal, they were not to offer it to the Lord. (vs.24) Why were they not to accept anything in this condition from the hand of a foreigner for an offering as well? vs. 25

16.  By the time the prophet Malachi was speaking to them, they had not kept these rules.  What does he rebuke them for?  Comment on the following verses:

  • Malachi 1:6-14

17.  Do we sometimes give less than our best to the Lord?  It is easy to pay everyone else before we give our tithe to the Lord and realize it is not as much as we had intended to give.  It is easy to give our worn out clothes to a needy family rather than our best clothing to them.  How is the Lord convicting you about this area today?  Share if you would like.

18.  Back to Leviticus 22.  How long was a newborn sheep or goat to remain with its mother before being accepted as an offering to the Lord? vs. 26,27 -

19.  What could not be done with a cow or sheep and its young on the same day? vs. 28

20.  What type of offering was to be eaten on the same day it was offered? vs.29-30

21.  Do you remember what the Grain Offering (thanksgiving offering) was?  Was their any meat offered with this?  Look back and review to get the answer.

22.  Back to Leviticus 22.  The priests and the people were to keep the Lord's commandments because He was and is the Lord. (vs.31)  They were not to profane His Holy Name, for He had sanctified them.(vs.32,33) ... What does sanctify mean?  It means "to be set apart; to be holy; to be consecrated; purified".  We have been "sanctified" as believers in the Lord.  Comment on the following verses:

  • What 3 things happened when you became a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ? ... 1 Corinthians 6:9-11-
  • In the same way that we presented the parts of our bodies to impurity under the old nature, how should we present them now that will result in on-going sanctification? ... Romans 6:17-19 -

Application:

24.  We need to examine ourselves as we think upon this lesson in a few areas.

  • First, are we keeping ourselves clean through godly living, the washing of the water of the Word, and confession through prayer?  We need to be clean before we minister to others.
  • Next, are we giving the Lord our best in regard to our time, our talents, our offerings?  Do we tend to give Him left-over time?  Do we hide our talents and not allow them to shine for Him?  Do we give Him left-over money for offerings?  When we give to the needy, do we give them left-overs?  Let's think about this and re-adjust our thinking and our actions to give Him the best of all that we have.
  • Lastly, in thinking about the way that Jesus confronted the unclean spirits in others and helped them to be set free, are we taking His light and hope to this dark world and setting the captives free?  The Old Testament was full of pictures and shadows of the Perfect Savior we would have that would take away our sins.  The Lord, however, wants us to move out of the sanctuary and realize that we "house" the Lord in our bodies which are His temple today.  Rather than people come to the temple for cleansing, we take the glory of the Lord to them and offer them cleansing.  Comment on the following verse:  Revelation 22:17 ... What are we to say to the unclean in our world around us?

25.  Summarize the lesson and post a prayer if you would like.
