Numbers Chapter 3 - Observation Questions

3.  What 2 sons served with Aaron as priests during the remainder of his lifetime? vs. 4

4.  What tribe did the Lord ask to be brought before Aaron the priest to serve him? vs. 6

5.  Why this tribe?  First of all, this is the tribe that both Moses and Aaron are from.  Also, this is the tribe who willingly offered themselves to serve the Lord after the incident with the golden calf worship. Comment on the verses below:

  • Who were brothers and a sister? ..... Exodus 4:14; Exodus 15:20

6.  Back to Numbers 3.  What were the duties of the tribe of Levi to be? vs.7 -

7.  The Levites were also to keep all the furnishings of the tent of meeting, along with the duties of the sons of Israel, to do the service of the tabernacle. (vs.8).  Who were the tribe of Levi to be "wholly" given to? vs. 9

8.  Aaron and his sons were to keep their priesthood.  What would happen to any other person (layman) who came near the tabernacles for these purposes? vs. 10

Note: With only the three priests, God commanded the entire tribe of Levi to do the service of the tabernacle. The Lord says that the tribe of Levi is "wholly given to Aaron." While Aaron is ministering to the Lord and His people, the Levites will be ministering to Aaron and the priests.

9.  Just as the Levites were "chosen" by God to serve His high priest, we have been chosen by God to serve our High Priest Jesus.  What is our duty as a priest unto Him?

  • 1 Peter 2:9 -

10.  What are we to submit ourselves to?

  • 1 Peter 2:13-16 -

11.  Back to Numbers 3.  What did the Lord take from among the children of Israel to be His for the work of the service of the tabernacle instead of every firstborn who opens the womb, which He had originally declared after coming out of Egypt? vs.11-13

Note:  Next, the Lord had Moses number the sons of Levi by their father's households, by their families, every male from 1 month old and up. (vs.14,15)...So Moses obeyed and did so. (vs.16)

12.  Who were the 3 sons of Levi? vs. 17

13.  Who were the 2 sons of Gershon by their families? vs. 18

14.  Who were the 4 sons of Kohath by their families? vs. 19

15.  Who were the 2 sons of Merari by their families? vs. 20

16.  How many males 1 month and up did Moses number in the families of Gershon? vs.21,22

17.  Where were the families of Gershon to camp in regard to the tabernacle? vs. 23

18.  Who was the leader of the households of the Gershonites? vs. 24

19.  What were the designated duties involving the tabernacle that were given to the sons of Gershon? vs.25,26 - Name 6 duties listed.

22.  Who was the leader of the households of the Kohathites? vs. 30

23.  What were the designated duties involving the tabernacle that were given to the sons of Kohath? vs.25,26 - Name 6 duites listed. - vs. 31

24.  Which son of Aaron was the chief of the leaders of Levi and what did he have oversight of? vs. 32

25.  How many males 1 month and up did Moses number in the 2 families of Merari? vs.33,34

26.  Where were the families of Merari to camp in regard to the tabernacle? vs. 35

27.  Who was the leader of the households of Merari? vs. 35

28.  What were the designated duties involving the tabernacle that were given to the sons of Merari? vs.36,37 - Name 7 things listed.

29.  Who were the Levites that camped directly in front of the tabernacle facing eastward? vs. 38

30.  Moses spoke to God in the tent of meeting; Aaron was the High Priest; and his sons were ministers in the holy place.  What would happen to any layman that would come near to the sanctuary? vs.38

31.  What was the number of males that were 1 month and upward from the tribe of Levi when Moses & Aaron counted them? vs. 39

32.  After that, the Lord had Moses number every firstborn male of the sons of Israel from 1 month old and upward, making a list of all of their names.(vs.40)  This would have taken awhile to do.  How many names were there? vs. 43

33.  Who were the Levites and their cattle to belong to instead of the firstborn of the sons of Israel and the firstborn of their cattle ? vs. 41,45

34.  Since there were 273 more of the firstborn of the sons of Israel than there were Levites that were males one month old and upward ... God had Moses take 5 shekels per head and give that money to Aaron and his sons.  The idea was that since they would have given their service to the tabernacle, there would have been 273 more people to serve Aaron and his sons than it will be with the Levites now..God is fair and just.  He is making sure Aaron and his sons get what would have been coming to them through the consecrated firstborn males. (vs.46-49) That's awesome, isn't it? ..... How many shekels were given in terms of the value in the sanctuary? vs. 50,51 -

Application:

35.  Just as the Lord strategically "placed" the families of the Levites on the sides of the tabernacle that He desired them to be and "designated" the services that each one would take care of for the work of His service, He has done the same thing for each born again believer today.  Each one of us are referred to as "living stones" and we are making up the "spiritual house of the Lord".  He dwells in the midst of us in the same way He dwelt in the midst of their encampments.  The beautiful thing for us is that He actually dwells within each one of us as well.  Our very bodies are the temple of His Holy Spirit.  Let's look at the gifts and see how the Holy Spirit designates one or more gifts to each believer for the purpose of bringing the body of Christ to the full measure of faith and good works.  Amen.  Comment on these verses:

  • Read 1 Corinthians 12:7-11 - 1) What is given to each one of us? vs. 7 - ... 2) Why is it given to us? vs. 7 - ... 3) Who distributes the gifts just as He wills ? vs. 11 ...
  • Read Romans 12:3-8 - 1) What has God allotted to each one of us? vs.3b ... 2) Our gifts differ according to the grace He has given us (vs.6)
  • Read Ephesians 4:7-16 - ... 1) What has the Lord given to each one of us? vs. 7 ... 2) When He ascended after His resurrection, He gave gifts to men. (vs.8) .. some as apostles; some as prophets; some as evangelists; some as pastors and teachers ..(vs.11) ... 3) What purpose do they serve? vs. 12 ... 4) How long will this be needed? vs. 13 ...4) What is the intended result of these gifts in the body of Christ? vs. 14-16
  • Read 1 Peter 4:10,11 - 1) What are we to do with the gift(s) we have received from the Lord? vs.10 ... 2) What should our words be if we have speaking gifts? vs. 11 ... 3) Where should our strength come from if we have serving gifts? vs. 11 ...4) Do you believe you have prodominately speaking or serving gifts?  Share with us what you believe your gifts are.

Our gifts are not things we choose from under the tree.  They are literally placed within us when we are born again.  It may take years to realize what they are.  The best way to know what you are gifted in is to ask yourself what makes you feel joy inside and a sense of fulfillment and purpose when you do certain things in the body of believers?  The joy of the Lord is our strength, so whatever the Lord has given you to do will come strength and joy in doing it.  Love you all.

36.  Summarize this lesson and post a prayer if you would like.
