Exodus Worksheet - Chapter 1

Exodus Introduction:

The word Exodus means "exit, departure, the way out" (Hebrews 11:22). This book continues the history of the descendants of Jacob's 12 sons.
Chapters 1:1 — 11:10 cover the period when the Israelites first settled in the most fertile land in Egypt until the time when they became slaves to the Egyptians.
God had foretold to Abraham: Know of a surety that thy seed (descendants) shall be a stranger (temporary residents) in a land that is not theirs (Egypt), and shall serve them; and they shall afflict them four hundred years (Genesis 15:13; Acts 7:6).
This was fulfilled and the time had come for the Israelites to be set free and to prepare for their journey to the promised land.
