Review of Chapter 6-8
When we looked at Ch 7, we saw four principles dealing with God's judgments.
- First, God works to glorify Himself, that is, to make Himself known as God in the world.
- Second, judgment is not just for punishment, but it is also to show the righteousness and grace of God.
- Third, judgment often takes the form of an attack on the false gods or idols of those being judged.
- And fourth, it often increases in severity until it issues either in repentance or destruction.
Let's watch and see how these principles are illustrated as we continue our journey through the Ten Plagues.
In 7, we saw the first plaque of the Nile turning to blood. .
In 8, we saw the second and third plagues: frogs and gnats. Pharaoh said he would let them go to make sacrifices to their God, but when he got relief, he hardened his heart and did not let them go.
Today in 9, we will see the plaques on the livestock, the plague of boils on animals and livestock, and the plague of hail..
Exodus Chapter 9
Moses had interceded on Pharaoh's behalf for the plague of insects to cease. The Lord kept His Word and stopped the plague, but Pharaoh did not keep his word, but hardened his heart when he felt relief.
The Lord sent Moses back to Pharaoh to tell him that if he did not let them go, a very severe pestilence would come upon the livestock in the field.
1. Who would the Lord make a distinction between?
- What would happen to the livestock of the Israelites in the land of Goshen? vs. 4 -
The Lord set a definite time for this to happen the following day. This was God's grace giving them 'time' to bring in the livestock. Only the livestock left in the fields were hit with the pestilence.
2. We have warnings throughout the New Testament that the Lord is coming back.
- Will we take 'shelter' in knowing Him and being saved from the 'wrath to come'?
- Why does the Lord seem to be 'slow' in regard to His return?
- 2 Peter 3:8-9 -
3. All the livestock that was not sheltered in the land of Egypt died.
- What did Pharaoh do to see if the Lord's word was true about Israel's livestock?
- What did he find out?
- Did it change his mind? vs. 7 -
4. After this, the Lord told Moses & Aaron to take handfuls of soot from a kiln. Moses threw it toward the sky in the sight of Pharaoh.
- What did the soot become all over the land of Egypt? - vs. 9
- What did it cause to happen on man and beast throughout the land of Egypt? vs. 9
5. Why did the magicians not actively try to repeat this trick? vs. 11 -
Once again Pharaoh's heart was hard. The Lord caused it this time for there were more judgments to be poured out. As as have seen in past lessons, each plague was a direct judgment agains an Egyptian diety they worshiped.
There will be a list of these at the end of the plagues for review.
6. The following morning, Moses was to go back to Pharaoh again.
- What was he to tell him? vs. 14-15 -
7. Do we realize there is no one like the Lord in all the earth?
He goes to great lengths to show Himself greater than any other god or idol we could ever put before Him.
Comment on these verses:
- Deuteronomy 3:24 -
- 2 Samuel 7:22-23 -
- Psalm 86:8 -
- Isaiah 45:5-7 -
- Isaiah 46:9 -
- Jeremiah 10:6,7 -
When we pray, we should acknowledge to the Lord that we know that there is none like Him. Amen.
8. Why did God allow Pharaoh to remain alive and to continue in power? vs. 16 -
9. Does the Lord use even the wicked rulers to fulfill His purposes in the earth?
- Proverbs 16:4 -
After all of this, Pharaoh still exalted himself against the Lord's people and would not let them go.
The Lord had Moses to tell him that on the next day about that same time, God would send a very heavy hail such had never been seen before that time or since that time.
What did God tell them to do "ahead of time to protect the livestock" ?
Every man and beast in the field and not in the safety of shelter would be killed by the hailstones. We see the mercy of God in warning them ahead of time.
10. Which ones of Pharaoh's servants fled to safety and took their livestock to safety? vs. 20 -
There were those who paid no regard to the word of the Lord and did not take shelter for themselves or their livestock. (vs.21)
11. What type of hailstorm was this? vs. 24-25
12. What was the only area that did not get any hail? vs. 26 -
13. What event is coming to the world soon that we have been warned about beforehand by our Lord?
- Matthew 24:42-44 -
14. Pharaoh sent for Moses and Aaron. What did he confess to them and what did he ask them to do for him? vs. 27-28
15. If they would pray for him and the hailstorm would cease, what did he say he would do? vs. 28 -
16. Moses said he would go out of the city and spread his hands to the Lord and the storm would cease and there would be no more hail.
- What was this to show to Pharaoh and his people? vs. 29 -
17. What did Moses know concerning Pharaoh and his servants? vs. 30 -
(God had told Moses in the beginning that it would take the death of their firstborns before they would allow the release of the captives)
18. What crop would still be good for them to have food in the season to come? vs. 31-32 -
Once again, we see the mercy of God and how He controls his acts of judgment by the attribute of His mercy and care for man.
19. Moses went out and spread out his hands to the Lord.
- What happened? vs. 33 -
20. What did Pharaoh do when he realized that the danger had passed and all was at peace again? vs. 34-35 -
- How typical is that of mankind?
- Will we heed the Lord's warnings?
