Exodus Worksheet - Chapter 3

We saw in chapter 2 how Moses' life could be seen in 3 segments of 40 years each.
The first 40 years he was raised in Pharaoh's household after being raised by Pharaoh's daughter as her own.  We saw that he was educated in all the ways of the Egyptians.
When he was approaching the age of 40, he believed it was time to deliver His brethren, the Hebrews, from the cruel slavery of the Egyptians.  He killed an Egyptian for being so cruel to his brethren, but the brethren did not understand that he was called of God to deliver them.  It was not God's timing.
Pharaoh was going to kill Moses for what he had done.  Moses left the riches of Egypt and chose to identify with who he was as a Hebrew.
He fled to the wilderness of Midian and stayed in the home of Jethro, married one of her daughters, and he tended sheep day in and day out for the next 40 years.
On one of those average days, while he was tending sheep, after all those years of silence ... he sees a bush on fire and yet the bush is not consumed...he steps closer to investigate and has a life changing encounter with God Almighty!
Exodus Chapter 3

1.  What was the mountain that Moses was on? vs. 1 -
2.  Who appeared in the blazing fire of the burning bush? vs. 2 -
3.  What was so unusual about the bush that burned? vs. 2b-3 -
4.  Who spoke to Moses from the bush and called him by name? vs. 4 -
5.  What did He say to Moses first of all? vs. 5 -
Note:  The ground itself was not holy, but the presence of God Himself made that place holy.  Holiness involves being consecrated to the Lord's service and thus being separated from the common place.
God said to Moses: "I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Issac, and the God of Jacob."  This was God's way of reminding Moses that He is the Covenant-Keeping God; faithful to the promises He had long established with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
6.  What had the Lord seen and what was He aware of? vs. 7-
7.  What had God come down to do for the Israelites?
  • 1)
  • 2)
8. What places were to be given to the Israelites for their own possession from God? vs. 8 -
  • 1)
  • 2)
  • 3)
  • 4)
  • 5)
  • 6)
9.  What had reached the ears of God that was moving Him toward compassionate action to deliver? vs. 9 -
So far, this must sound great to Moses!  He has had a personal revelation of God Himself.  God has shown Himself to be:
  • 1) The Holy One
  • 2) Faithful to the Covenant
  • 3) The Deliverer
Now God explains further how this deliverance is going to come about ... vs. 10
"Therefore, come now, and I will send you to Pharaoh, so that you mgiht bring My people, the sons of Israel, out of Egypt."
Now wait...Why me?  Who am "I" ???
  • Have you ever asked God that question when you realized something put on your heart and mind to do for Him?
  • Have you thought you must be dreaming.  Have you said to God, "But who am I ?"
10. What did Moses say to God's call to him? vs. 11 -
11. How did God answer Moses? vs. 12 -
It did not matter 'who' Moses was; it only mattered Who was 'with' him!  Amen.
Moses wanted to know when he told the sons of Israel that the God of their fathers had sent him to them ... what would he tell them God's name was?
12. According to God, what is His Name? vs. 14 -
Note:  If you were reading from the original Hebrew language, there would be four letters used that would be our alphabet JHWH which has been variously pronounced with added vowel sounds as Jehovah or as Yahweh.
More important than how to pronounce it, is to understand the meaning in the name God revealed of Himself to Moses.  It is the verb "to be" and translated in our English in the KJV and other translations "I am".
God was no longer to be known as the God of the forefathers long before the 400 years of silence in Egyptian slavery .. and He was not simply the God of the future who would bring His Messiah to save mankind from their slavery to sin.
He is the God of "now", of the "present".  He is a personal and intimate God.  He is everything Moses needs and everything you and I need today.  He is Jehovah, the Self-Existent One.
13. What did God say was so special about this revealed name of Himself? vs. 15b -
14. How long would this be His name to His people?
15. Jesus used this name for God as His own Name to show that He is truly God.  Comment on these verses:
  • John 8:56-58 -
16.  Moses was to gather the elders of Israel together and give them the message that the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob had appeared to him.
  • What was he to tell them about God? vs. 16-17 -
17. Would the elders believe Moses? vs. 18 -
18.  Moses was to go with the elders to Pharaoh (the king of Egypt).
  • What were they to say to Pharaoh? vs. 18 -
19. God told them He already knew how Pharaoh would answer them.
  • What would be the only way Pharaoh would let His people go? vs. 19 -
20. How would God get his attention and willingness to let go? vs. 20 -
This will be through ten plaques that we will learn about in the book of Exodus in the lessons coming.
21. God said He would grant the people favor in the sight of the Egyptians and they would not go out empty-handed.
  • What was every woman to ask their neighbor and what would they be given? vs. 21-22 -
Thus they would plunder the Egyptians.
22. How does this go with the promise God had given to Abraham over 400 years before this time?
  • Genesis 15:13-14 -
Application:
  • How are you comforted that it doesn't matter who you are but who He is and the fact that He is always with you?
Read & Comment on these portions of the Psalms:
  • Psalm 16:7-8 -
  • Psalm 16:11 -
  • Psalm 118:5-9 -
  • Psalm 139:1-16 -
Fear Not.  Say to them "I Am that I Am has sent me."
