Genesis Worksheet - Chapter 50

Genesis Chapter 50

Jacob's time to die had come upon him.  We saw in yesterday's lesson that Jacob (aka Israel) was 147 years old when he died.  We saw that he was a man full of faith, believing God for His promises as he blessed his 12 sons and told them what the days ahead would be like for the tribes of Israel they would represent.

Jacob has asked that Joseph bury him with his fathers in the land of Canaan where Abraham and Isaac were buried.  Then Jacob breathed his last.

1.  What does Joseph do? vs. 1 -

2.  Joseph then commanded that the physicians in Egypt embalm his father Jacob.  How many days were required for embalming? vs. 2 -

3.  How many days did the Egyptians weep for Jacob when he died? vs. 3 -

4.  When the days of mourning were past, Joseph asked Pharaoh if he could be excused to take his father to Canaan and bury him as he requested.

Did Pharaoh allow Joseph to go?

Who else went as well to Canaan for the funeral and burial of this great man we know as Israel? vs. 6-9 -

5.  What did this great company of people do when they came to the threshing floor of Atad, beyond the Jordan? vs. 10 -

6.  What did the Canaanites of the land say when they saw the mourning that took place? vs. 11 -

After they buried Jacob - Joseph, his brothers, and all who had traveled for this burial, went back to Egypt.

7.  What did Joseph's brothers worry about once their father had died? vs. 15 -

They sent a message to Joseph saying that their father had charged before he died that he forgive the transgressions of his brothers and their sin for what they did wrong.

They asked at that time for Joseph's forgiveness.

Joseph cried...the brothers came and fell down before him saying they were his servants..

8.  What did Joseph say to them? vs. 19-20

9.  What intent was their heart when they harmed him? vs. 20 -

10. What was God's heart in allowing it? vs. 20 -

11. What was the present result when all had been said and done? vs. 20 -

  • Has someone intended evil against you and God used it for good to accomplish another purpose in life that has ultimately helped other people?  Share if you would like:
  • What does our suffering help us to do for others who suffer?
  • 2 Corinthians 1:3-5 -

12. What assurance did Joseph give to his brothers? vs. 21 -

13. Joseph stayed in Egypt, he and his father's household.

How long did Joseph live? vs. 22 -

14. Joseph was blessed to see generations of his grandchildren.

What did Joseph tell his brothers when he was about to die? vs. 24 -

15. What did Joseph want them to do with his bones? vs. 25 -

  • Hebrews 11:22 -
  • Joseph made mention by faith of the Exodus.  It will be almost 400 years before that event will actually take place.  Isn't that incredible how God predicts the future for us by His Word?

16. Read & Comment on these verses about when Joseph's bones were removed from Egypt and taken to Canaan as he requested:

  • Exodus 13:19 -
  • Joshua 24:32 -
  • Where was Joseph's bones buried in Canaan?

So, Joseph died at the age of 110 and he was embaled and placed in a coffin in Egypt.  His bones were to be carried from there eventually as mentioned above.

Is there archaelogical evidence of Joseph's tomb?[answer

Application:

As we close out the book of Genesis and the life of Joseph, we end on the note of forgiveness.

Joseph's brothers rejected him, hated him, and planned to kill him when he was only 17 years of age.  He was then sold into slavery to the Egyptians and landed in Potiphar's household.

Although he had favor in Potiphar's eyes, Mrs. Potiphar tempted him to lie with her every day and finally got so upset with him that she lied about him and said he did what he did not do and he was put into prison for it.

He interpreted dreams for the cupbearer who said he would remember him, but he forgot him and it was 2 years after the cupbearer got out before Pharaoh had a dream and finally he remembered Joseph's ability to interpret dreams.  Then, Joseph began to make some sense out of this hard life he had been given.

It had been 13 years since he had dreams from God that seemed to be shattered and hopeless.

It was 20 years before he finally saw his brothers and saw his father again.

He was able to bless them and keep them alive in the famine. Now, he is willing to forgive his brothers completely because he can see how all things have 'worked together' for good to accomplish a higher purpose.

The key to forgiving others is to realize that God is in control and because your eyes have been opened to His love and forgiveness for you, you are free to forgive and release those who did not have His ability to love you unconditionally as He has.  If he so forgave us, we must forgive one another.

    Genesis Chapter 47

Joseph told Pharaoh that his father and brothers and all they that had were now in the land of Goshen.  Joseph took 5 of the brothers and presented them to Pharoah.  Pharaoh asked them their occupations and they told him they were shepherds.  They asked that Pharoah would allow them to live in the land because the famine was so severe in Canaan.

    6.  What do you think gave Jacob, an old Jewish man who was worn out and broken, the right or the authority to "bless" the greatest man in all the earth, the king of Egypt, Pharaoh?

That is the same right that you and I have to give a blessing to those around us!  Jacob was not greater than Pharaoh in his person, but he was greater than Pharoah in his position, as a child of God, as a servant of the Most High God!

    7.  Comment on these verses:

    • What purpose do you have as your calling from God? vs. 9 -

    12.  Joseph gave the people 'seed' to 'sow' in the land.  What were they to give to Pharaoh who owned their land at the harvest time? vs. 24 -

What did Joseph tell the brothers to tell Pharaoh if he asked about their occupation and why were they to say that? vs. 33-34 -

    Application:

    8.  He went to Beersheba to worship and offer sacrifices.  Look up these verses and write out the significance Beersheba has already had in the history of his forefathers and himself:
    • Genesis 21:31-33 -
    • Genesis 26:31-33 -
    • Genesis 22:19-

Israel was in the land of Canaan, raising his family.  He had heard of the promise of becoming a great nation and possessing the land of Canaan from God himself, but also from his father, Isaac, and his grandfather, Abraham.  All three had been promised the land of Canaan as a possession.

When Abraham had gone through a famine in the past, he was told by God not to go to Egypt.  Now Joseph is in Egypt and asking them to come live there because of the famine that will last another 5 years.  What was going on?

Can you imagine the pull on his heart between what God wanted and what his flesh wanted in seeing Joseph and having his family taken care of ?  So, before the journey is made, Jacob turns to the God of his fathers and to his God, who had appeared to him and confirmed the covenant to him.

Have you ever felt God had planted you in the center of His will and all of a sudden, a change of events turned everything upside down?

You end up somewhere you never dreamed was a part of God's plan for your life!  This is the way God often works as we see in Israel's life.

Wonder if he had been told what God had told his grandfather when He first appeared to him?  He told him his ancestors would be enslaved for 400 years.  But Israel wouldn't know that going to Egypt at this time of blessing would be the road to the fulfillment of that promise in the distant future.

    9.  Refresh on this - It is doubtful that Abraham knew that nation would be Egypt or when it would take place.

    • Genesis 15:13-15 -

When circumstances turn upside down and God's plan seems to be on hold, we must remember that He holds our future in His hands and He knows exactly where the road leads.

    What is our responsibility?

We are to be like Jacob.  Go back to the altars where God has spoken to us and worship Him.  Place our trust completely in Him and not in man or our circumstances.

    10. Comment on these:

    • Proverbs 16:9 -
    • Proverbs 3:5-6 -

    11. After Jacob worships God, he goes to bed.  That very night, God speaks to him.

What is God's assurance to him?

    • Genesis 46:3-4 -

God has made us promises that He will never leave us or forsake us.  We may not understand what turns our lives take on the road, but we can know that our future is in God's hands.  Will we worship and leave the driving to Him?

    12. If we seek Him first and above all else, what assurance does He give us?

    • Matthew 6:33 -

    Genesis Worksheet - Chapter 44

    Genesis Chapter 44

Joseph has lavished blessings on his brothers and has given five times the amount to his full-blood brother, Benjamin.  Now the brothers go on their way back to Canaan with the grain they have come to purchase.

    1.  What did Joseph ask his house steward to do for each of the brothers? vs. 1 -

    2.  What additional item did Joseph have the house steward put into Benjamin's sack? vs. 2 -

The brothers had just gotten out of the city on their way home when Joseph sent the house steward to overtake them and say:

"Why have you repaid good for evil?  Is this not the cup of my lord that he drinks from and uses for divination?  You have done wrong in this."

They all knew they had not done this and would not have done this.  They reminded him that they brought the money back the first time that was in their sacks, so why would they steal gold or silver from the lord's house?

Then they make the rash statement:  "If it is found, let him die, and we will be the lord's slaves."  The house steward changed that to "Whom it is found on will be my slave; the rest of you shall be innocent."

    3.  They hurried, each one, to open their sack.  He searched, beginning with the oldest and ending with the youngest.

Where did he find the cup? vs. 12 -

    4.  How did all the brothers react when they realized this? vs. 13 -

When Judah and his brothers arrived back at Joseph's house, they fell to the ground before him.  Joseph asked them why that had done it.  Judah spoke up with these words:

"What can we say to my lord?  What can we speak?  And how can we justify ourselves?

God has found out the iniquity of your servants; behold, we are my lord's slaves, both we and the one in whose possession the cup has been found."

    5.  What did Joseph say he wanted for the punishment of the one who had the silver cup? vs. 17 -

    6.  What did Joseph say the rest of them could do? vs. 17 -

Judah took the lead role once again and he approached Joseph.  These were his words:

"Oh my lord, may your servant please speak a word in my lord's ears, and do not be angry with your servant; for you are equal to Pharaoh."....

Then Judah went through the entire story of how Joseph had first asked them if they had a father and a brother?  He told him how hard it was to bring back Benjamin because their father's life was 'bound up' in the lad, being the only son left from Rachel.

He told how the brother of Benjamin was dead and if anything happened now that Benjamin did not come back to him, he would surely die of grief.  Judah told him how he had become surety for Benjamin and would give his own life if he did not bring him back to their father."

    7.  Let's look at the first verse of chapter 45 to see Joseph's reaction to this and what happens.

    • Genesis 45:1-2 -

In our next lesson, we will look at that account and it is so moving!

    Application:

What is the purpose of Joseph planting the cup in Benjamin's sack and telling the brothers he will keep Benjamin there and they will go since they are 'innocent' of the crime?

Benjamin was the only brother not involved in what had happened to Joseph 20 years prior.  By telling Judah and the others they were 'innocent', Judah was not thinking of the cup in the sack at all; he was remembering what he and the others had done to their brother Joseph and how they were truly the 'guilty' ones.

When the brothers bow down to Joseph and they have such a humble attitude of willingness to lay down their own lives in his place, Joseph sees a truly repentant heart in them.  Things have changed and they are truly different in the way they handle this.
    • the brothers who were filled with the fury of jealousy at the favoritism shown to Joseph, now do not react when Benjamin is given five times more than they are for dinner.
    • the brothers who abandoned Joseph will not desert Benjamin
    • the brothers who sold Joseph for small change now offer themselves in exchange for their brother
    • the brothers who lied to their father, now plead for mercy on his behalf

This true state of humility and repentance brings brokenness to the brothers and to Joseph as well as we see in Genesis 45:1-2, he wept so loud that the entire household of Pharaoh heard him crying.  He had to reveal himself to his brothers and we will see the rest of that in the next lesson.  For today, let's think about what repentance means and if we have truly repented of sin, first, to repent of being a sinner to become a believer.  Next, to repent of our sins wholeheartedly to continue in our progression of the faith as a Christain.

    8.  Using a Bible dictionary from home or online, find the definition of repentance and write it out:

Note:  True repentance will bring hatred of sin and a brokenness that we have hurt the heart of a Holy God and offended His righteousness.  It is a change of mind that will bring a change of heart and evidence of a changed lifestyle; one that desires to please God.

    Genesis Worksheet - Chapter 43

    Genesis Chapter 43

The famine was severe in all the land.  When Jacob's family finished eating all the grain that the brothers had brought back from Egypt, he told them to go back to buy some more food.

    1.  What was it that Judah told Jacob that the man over the food supply in Egypt had warned them of? vs. 3 -

    2.  Therefore Judah said the brothers would not go back with Benjamin.

What did Jacob (Israel) say in regard to this? vs. 6 -

The man (who we know to be Joseph) had questioned them particularly about them and their relatives wanting to know "Is your father alive?"  .. "Have you another brother?" ...

Judah said "We answered his questions.  How were we to know he would say to bring our brother down?"

    3.  What was sure to happen if they did not go to Egypt? vs. 8 -

    4.  What was Judah willing to offer if he did not bring Benjamin back to his father? vs. 9 -

Obviously, Jacob's hesitation to let go of Benjamin, had kept them there for awhile.  Judah said they could have returned twice by now if they would have gone right back and not delayed.

    5.  Jacob finally said "If it must be so ...", then take these things to the man as a present.  What things were named that came from their area in Canaan? vs. 11 -

They were not only going to return the money from the first trip that was not taken, but they were taking back double the amount in their bags to give.  And finally ..... they were also taking .... Benjamin.

    6.  Jacob said "May God Almighty grant you compassion in the sight of the man, so that he will release to you your other brother (Simeon) and Benjamin."  What did Jacob finally say in regard to himself? vs. 14 -

So the brothers took Benjamin and went to Egypt to stand before Joseph.

    Application:

In regard to Jacob being forced to "let go" of Benjamin with his words "if it must be so", we see the famine had forced this father to risk everything and let go of everything he held dear to his life ... the only thing he had left from his dear Rachel.  She had died giving birth to Benjamin and the first son she gave him, Joseph, he assumes has been dead these 20 years....since he last saw him as a teenager and the brothers told him they found his blood stained coat.

Have you ever had to "let go" of something so dear to you it took the life right out of you?  Can you relate to Jacob?  "If it must be" ..................

    7.  When Joseph saw that Benjamin had been brought back, what did he have his house steward to prepare for the brothers? vs. 16 -

The brothers were all afraid.  They have been feeling guilt for what they did to Joseph ever since Simeon was left behind and they had to bring Benjamin back.  They have been sensing that it is time to pay their dues for what they did to Joseph their brother 20 years ago.  Now they are concerned that this Egyptian leader will be upset with them over the money that went home in their bags.

    8.  What do they believe is going to happen to them at this meeting? vs. 18 -

    9.  They began to explain themselves and defend themselves before anything was ever said to them.  (sure sign of guilt) ... yet instead of punishment, what will they be receiving? vs. 23 -

The brothers were brought into the house, given water to wash their feet, and the donkeys were fed.  They prepared the present they would present to the Egyptian lord (who we know to be Joseph) when he came to eat at noon.

    10. What did this Egyptian lord (Joseph) want to know from their trip back home? vs. 27 -

    11. Then Joseph lifted his eyes and saw his brother Benjamin, his mother's son, and said "Is this your youngest brother, of whom you spoke to me?"  ...

What did he say to Benjamin? vs. 29 -

    12. What did Joseph do at this point? vs. 30 -

    13. He washed his face and got control of himself to come back and eat with the brothers.  What order were the brothers seated and how did they react to this person knowing that?  vs. 33 -

    14. Joseph took portions to the brothers from his own table.  How much larger was Benjamin's portion than all the others?  vs. 34 -

So they feasted and drank freely with him.

    Application:

The brothers were guilty.  They expected punishment at every turn.  Instead they were given treasures of "grace".

Who does the servant say the money in their sacks came from? vs. 23 -

We were guilty in our trespasses and sins.  We deserved the punishment for ignoring God and living a life that did not honor our Creator.  When we came to Him, were we punished or turned away?  We too, received, treasures of "grace".
