Mark Worksheet - Chapter 13

Worksheet - Mark 13

Review of Chapter 12:

  • 1) In the Parable of the Vine-growers, we saw that this represented the religious leaders of Israel; how God had prophesied this in the Old Testament and how they fulfilled the rejection of the Lord.  They beat and killed prophets the Lord sent to them along the way.  When He finally sent the nation of Israel His Only Son, they would kill Him as well.  God would give the fruit of the kingdom to another nation, all who were not of the Jewish race - the Gentile nations.  We know from our other studies that God is not finished with the nation of Israel yet.  Amen.
  • 2) We saw the Pharisees, the Herodians, the Sadducees, and the Scribes all try to trap Jesus in quesitons about the Jewish laws.  He was asked about paying taxes to Caesar.  Jesus said to "render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's and to God the things that are God's."  He was asked about the greatest commandents and He told them to love the Lord with all of their being and to love their neighbor as themselves.
  • 3) Jesus taught that the Messiah was not only the son of David, coming from him as a descendant, but that David recognized Him as his own "Lord".  This was from Psalm 110:1.
  • 4) Jesus told the Jewish crowds that He taught in the synagogues to beware of the piety and hypocrisy of the Scribes; that their judgment would bring about a greater condemnation; for they pretended one thing but were quite different on the inside.
  • 5) Jesus taught about the kind of giving that pleases God.  It is not giving out of our surplus like the rich who like to make a show of it; it is giving all that we have to God like the poor widow who gave all that she had to live on.  We looked at the New Testament pattern of giving.  We are to give according to what we have, not what we don't have.  We are to give as we have purposed in our hearts and do so cheerfully which God loves.  When we sow sparingly, we will reap sparingly.  When we sow bountifully, we will reap bountifully.  It is the law of sowing and reaping.  When we give first to His kingdom and righteousness, He takes care of all of our needs.  Amen.

Mark, Chapter 13:

1.  As Jesus was going out of the temple in Jerusalem, what did one of His disciples say to Him?

  • vs. 1 -

Note:  According to historical records, the stones of the Jewish temple were white and some of them were 37 feet long, 12 feet high, and 18 feet wide.

2.  What did Jesus tell this disciple about these great stones on these great buildings on the temple mount?

  • vs. 2 -

Note:  This was fulfilled literally in A.D. 70 when the Romans under Titus completely destroyed Jerusalem and  the temple buildings.  Stones were even pried apart to collect the gold leaf that melted from the roof when the temple was set on fire. (notes form NASB study Bible)..

3.  As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, what four disciples came to Him privately to ask Him questions about when this would happen as well as signs of the end times?  vs. 3,4 -

  • 1)
  • 2)
  • 3)
  • 4)

4.  Jesus told them several things.  List these below as things these Jewish men needed to know in regard to their nation of Israel as the time of the end was drawing near to them:

  • 1) vs. 5-6 -
  • 2) vs. 7-
  • 3) vs. 8 -
  • 4) vs. 9-11 -
  • 5) vs. 12 -
  • 6) vs. 13 -
  • 7) vs. 14-18 -
  • 8) vs. 19-20 -
  • 9) vs.21-23 -

5.  Jesus continued to tell them, that in those days, after the tribulation, many things would happen as well.  What else did he tell them about the future of their nation after the tribulation period came upon them?

  • 1) vs. 24 -
  • 2) vs. 25 -
  • 3) vs. 26-27 -

Note:  Jesus said they could learn a lesson from the fig tree.  He said that when the branch has already become tender and sprouts new leaves, they can know that summer is near.  In the same way, when they see these things happening, they can know that the Lord is near, even right at the door.  Jesus said that this generation (also means race i.e. Jewish race) would not pass away until all those things take place.  This was assurance to them that no matter what the nation of Israel had to endure from the Romans and all the years to come until the very end, they would still exist until His coming and gathering His elect for Himself.

6.  Although heaven and earth will pass away, what will never pass away? vs. 31 -

7.  Does Jesus Himself know when that day is?  vs. 32 -

8.  Who alone knows when that day is set? vs. 32 -

9.  Since the Jewish nation could not know the appointed time for all of this to take place, what was the one thing Jesus said they always needed to be? vs. 33 -

10.  What did Jesus compare His final coming for the nation of Israel to? vs. 34-37 -

11.  What was His final admonition concerning all that He was sharing with them that they would share with others and pass down, even to our age and time? vs. 37 -

Ponder:

  • Although the references to the temple in Jerusalem, the Sabbath day, the hills of Judea, and so many things that are Jewish of nature are made in this prophetic passage and applies to the nation of Israel, is the church also told to be on the ALERT?
  • What are we to be on the alert about?  We are to be on the alert for we do not know when the Lord Jesus is going to appear 'in the clouds' to call us 'up' to meet Him in the 'air'.  We call this the rapture although that term is not used in the Bible.  It is the great 'snatching up' and from all my studies of prophecy, I believe it is before the years of tribulation that are going to try the nation of Israel and the world left of unbelievers during His time of judgment.

12.  As believers, what have we come 'out' of already?

  • 1 John 5:12 -

13.  Will we face God's judgment or wrath now that we are believers in His Son Jesus?

  • 1 Thessalonians 5:9 -

14.  What event will happen for us that we are to comfort one another in regard to it?

  • 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 -

15.  Are we exhorted as believers to also be on alert concerning the Lord's coming for us?

  • 1 Thessalonians 5:4-6 -

 Short Lesson On Prophecy:

Okay, a quick little lesson from my years of prophecic study of the books of Daniel, Revelation, 2 Thessalonians and all the cross references of the prophets of the Old Testament....

When you make the drawings and you look at all of it, you see that Israel will be hated by all and many will be killed.

There will be a remnant that escapes to the mountains when the AntiChrist comes into the rebuilt temple they will be worshipping in - when he comes in to say he is God and demands their worship - they are to flee to the mountains where God has a place prepared for them.

This helps to understand why they are not to return to the house to get their cloak, etc. but to leave in haste.  It also explains why Jesus says to pray it will not be on a Sabbath or in the winter.  They will be traveling on foot and exposed to the weather.

According to Daniel and Revelation, the Lord will take care of them for 3 and 1/2 years and they will be kept from the terror of the AntiChrist.  This is the remnant that will see Him when He comes with the clouds at the end of that time.  They are the ones that I believe will be saved because they endured to the end.  That is my belief and I don't personally think it speaks of losing our salvation.

I believe that the church will have already been caught up in the clouds before this time and that we will be returning with Him when He comes to the mount and to reign on the earth for 1000 years.  I know that is a lot to read and take in and of course, I will be glad to give supporting Scriptures for all that I share.

Take time to read Daniel 12 which will help you understand the Abomination of Desolation that Jesus is talking about.

Daniel 12 Notes

  • Who stands guard over the sons of Daniel's people?  Who would Daniel's people be? vs. 1 -
  • What kind of distress will happen to the nation that Daniel belongs to at that time? vs. 1 -
  • Who will be rescued? vs. 1 -
  • What will happen to those who died in faith at that time?  What will happen to the people that were not believers? vs. 2 -
  • At the time all of this happens, who will shine bright and lead others to righteousness? vs. 3 -
  • Would Daniel ever see these things fulfilled in his own lifetime?  vs. 13 -
  • What was Daniel to do with the words that had been given him at that time? vs. 4 -

Daniel saw the angelic figures on the bank of the river and he asked them how long it would be until the end of this dreadful time on his people?

  • What was the answer given? vs. 7 -

Daniel heard the words and wrote them down for us today, but at that time he could not understand at all.

  • What was he told? vs. 9-10 -
  • How many days would the distress happen from the time the Abomination of Desolation is set up? vs. 11 -

If you do the math, that is 3 and 1/2 years of time.

We can watch the nation of Israel and know the signs are here and coming faster all the time.  They have been in the news every day for the last couple of years.  Now, the country of Iran is threatening their existence and we see the nations of the world getting involved in this.  It is all around God's nation, Israel, who we learn about in Genesis who is Jacob, son of Isaac, son of Abraham.

It won't be long.  I pray we are ready to be caught up in the air and forever be with the Lord.

Review & Reflect:

  • 1) The disciples were impressed with the glory of the Jewish temple.  It was destroyed in A.D. 70 by the Romans as Jesus predicted it would be.
  • 2) Four of the disciples came to Jesus privately to ask more details about this event and the signs of the end times.  Jesus told them not to be deceived; that many would come in His name and mislead many.  The Jews will be under persecution and a remnant will have fled to the wilderness to escape the desolation of their temple in that day.  They will be looking for their Messiah.  He will come, but they are not to be mislead about how He will come and when He will come for them.  Jesus gives the details so that the warnings can be passed on generation to generation before His Second Coming.
  • 3) As Believers in Jesus (Jews and Gentiles) we have the catching up in the 'air' to look forward to which is separate from the Lord's actual coming back to the earth to rule and reign.  Just as the Jews need to be on the alert about the end times for their nation, we need to be on the alert that our Lord could call us home in the rapture anyday.  Are we ready?
