Mark Worksheet - Chapter 14 (1 of 2)

Worksheet - Mark 14

Review of Chapter 13:

  • 1) The disciples were impressed with the glory of the Jewish temple.  It was destroyed in A.D. 70 by the Romans as Jesus predicted it would be.
  • 2) Four of the disciples came to Jesus privately to ask more details about this event and the signs of the end times.  Jesus told them not to be deceived; that many would come in His name and mislead many.  The Jews will be under persecution and will have fled to the wilderness to escape the desolation of their temple in that day.  They will be looking for their Messiah.  He will come, but they are not to be mislead about how He will come and when He will come for them.  Jesus gives the details so that the warnings can be passed on generation to generation before His Second Coming.
  • 3) As Believers in Jesus (Jews and Gentiles) we have the catching up in the 'air' to look forward to which is separate from the Lord's actual coming back to the earth to rule and reign.  Just as the Jews need to be on the alert about the end times for their nation, we need to be on the alert that our Lord could call us home in the rapture anyday.  Are we ready?

Mark, Chapter 14:

Death Plot & Anointing

1.  Now the Passover and Unleavened Bread was 2 days off; and the chief priests and the scribes were seeking how to secretly steal and seize Jesus in order to kill Him.

  • Why did they not want to take Him during the Passover festival of the Jews? vs. 2 -

Note:  Passover was the Jewish festival commemorating the time when the angel of the Lord 'passed over' the homes of the Hebrews rather than killing their firstborn sons as he did in the Egyptian homes for the last plaque that finally got Pharaoh to release the Hebrews from slavery.  You can read about this in Exodus Chapter 12.

The Unleavened Bread feast followed the Passover feast and lasted seven days.  Read  Exodus 12:15-20; 23:15; 34:18; and Deuteronomy 16:1-8 to learn more about the feasts.

2.  What happened during this time while Jesus was staying outside of Jerusalem in Bethany in the home of Simon the leper? vs. 3 -

  • How did some of the disciples and those there react to this action by this woman? vs. 4 -
  • What did they think better use of the perfume would be?  How did they treat the woman for what she had done to Jesus with the perfume? vs. 5 -
  • What did Jesus do for the woman at that time?  What did He say about her act of worship? vs. 6 - 9 -
  • John's Gospel tells us who this woman was.  Who was she and what else do we learn about this moment from John? John 12:1-3 -
  • John points out one disciple that show the most indignation.  Who is he and what did John say was already in this man's heart to do?  John 12:4 -
  • Why did he show such concern for giving the money to the poor according to John? John 12:5-6 -

3.  Back to Mark 14, this disciple named Judas Iscariot went off to the chief priests, in order to betray Jesus to them.

  • They were glad he did this and what did they promise to give him? vs. 11 -
  • What did Judas begin seeking from that agreement on? vs. 11 -
  • What were the chief priests willing to give Judas according to Matthew 26:15 ?
  • According to Matthew, what did Judas begin to look for from that point on? Matthew 26:16 -

Back to Mark 14:

The Last Passover

4.  When it was time to eat the Passover meal, two of Jesus' disciples asked Him where they should prepare for Him to eat Passover.  There was a place already furnished and ready for them.

  • How would the disciples find the room to make preparations? vs. 12-16 -

5.  When it was evening this final Passover with Jesus (would have been Thursday night of Passion Week) ... Jesus came with His 12 disciples to the place prepared for them to eat the Passover meal.

  • As they reclined at the table eating, what did Jesus say to the 12 of them? vs. 18 -
  • How long had Jesus known the one that would do this to Him?John 6:68-71 -

Notes:  In John's Gospel, we are also told about the Lord washing the feet of His 12 disciples before they ate this meal together.  Peter felt so humbled by Jesus washing his feet and said "Never shall You wash my feet!"...

Jesus said "If I do not wash you, you will have no part in Me."...after this, Peter said, "Not my feet only, but my hands and my head too Lord."  Jesus said to Peter, "He who has bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and you are clean, but not all of you."

  • What did Jesus know at that time?  John 13:10-11 -

Yet, He washed the feet of His betrayer.

How precious to think that He knew all three years from the time He chose him what was in his heart and yet He served the one that would betray him.  Jesus went into very intimate teachings about the Holy Spirit who would indwell them after His departure and how they were to love and serve one another as He had given them an example.  As He spoke to them, He became very troubled in His spirit and that is when He said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, that one of you will betray Me." (John 13:21)

Peter and John both asked Him to tell them who it would be.  He said "The one for whom I shall dip the morsel and give it to him".  He dipped the morsel of bread and gave it to Judas.

  • What are we told happened after Judas ate the morsel of bread handed to him by Jesus?  Who actually entered into Judas at that time?  John 13:27 -
  • What did Jesus tell Judas to do? John 13:27 -
  • The disciples did not know what Jesus meant by telling him this.  What did they think Jesus must have meant? John 13:28-30 -

After Judas left them, Jesus went into the intimate teachings of loving one another and the role of the Spirit that would be in their lives. (John, Chapters 13 - 16...In John Chapter 17, we have the Lord's High Priestly Prayer to the Father for His disciples before His death ...we will enjoy all of this when we do lessons on the book of John in the near future)

Back to Mark 14:

  • What did Jesus say about the one who He would give the dipped morsel of bread to? Mark 14:20-21 -

(this shows us that although Jesus knew the wickedness and willingness in Judas' heart when He selected him to be part of the 12 and fulfill the Scriptures of prophecy, it was Judas' freewill that made the choices, not that he did not have a choice)

Judas left immediately into the night after receiving the dipped morsel of bread according to John 13:30.

The Lord's Supper

6.  While they were eating the Passover Meal, Jesus took some of the bread.

  •  What did He say after He broke the bread, blessed it in prayer, and gave it to His disciples?  Mark 14:22 -
  • When Jesus took the cup and gave thanks for it, He gave it to them and they all drank from it.  What did He say to them concering the wine they drank? Mark 14:24 -
  • When would Jesus drink of wine again? vs. 25 -

After they sang a hymn together, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

  • What did Jesus tell the eleven at this time?  vs. 27-28 -
  • What was Peter's reaction to this? vs. 29 -
  • What did Jesus tell Peter would happen that very night before the cock crowed twice in the morning? vs. 30 -
  • Even though Jesus told Peter this, what did Peter keep saying along with the others? vs. 31 -

Ponder - Compare Judas & Peter -

What was the difference between the betrayal of Judas and the denial of Peter?

Why would Judas be doomed and it be better that he was never born according to Jesus and why would Peter's denial not be final?
  • Was Satan involved in both of these actions?

We have seen Judas' heart.  Let's look at Peter's heart now and see that the difference was the heart, the intent.  There is a difference in weakness and wickedness.  Amen?

  • What do we learn from Luke's account of this conversation between Jesus and Peter? Luke 22:31-34 -

Note:  Just as Jesus knew the heart of Judas before selecting him that it was wicked and willing to betray Him ... Jesus knew the heart of Peter before Peter ever denied Him ... He not only knew Peter's weaknesses, but prayed with Peter that ultimate good and ministry would come forth from Satan's sifting of his faith and bringing failure to his life.

Reflect:

  • How does this encourage you today?
  • Are you glad Jesus knows your heart whether it is set on wickedess or beset by weakness?
  • Weakness is temporary; wickedness is eternal.  What weakness do you have today?
  • How has Satan been allowed to sift you like wheat?
  • Do you know that Jesus is praying for you, that your faith will not fail?

When you turn back to Him, He wants to use your weakness as well as your willingness to strengthen your brothers in Christ.  Look at how weakness will be used by God in your life!

When you are God's child by the covenant of the blood of Jesus by believing in Him as God's Son, raised from the dead for your sins, there are some awesome promises you can trust in regarding your temporary weaknesses and set backs.  Let's look at them together.

  • Who is praying for you during this time? Luke 22:31-32 -
  • What is the ultimate desire or goal of this temporary setback?Luke 22:32 -
  • Therefore, where should you turn without hesitation when you are feeling overcome by a sin or have a weakness of the flesh?Hebrews 4:14-16
  • According to the verses just read in Hebrews Chapter 4, does Jesus despise our weaknesses or sympathize with them?
  • Why does He understand them so well?
  • What kind of throne are we drawing near when we take our weaknesses to God?
  • What two things do we receive when we confess our weaknesses to Him?
  • What is mercy?  (look up in Bible dictionary)
  • What is grace? (look up in Bible dictionary)

Reflect:  What weakness will you take to the Lord's throne of grace today?  Are you encouraged that while Satan sifts you as wheat, Jesus is praying for you?

When you confess your sins to God, what can you be sure of?
  • 1 John 1:9 -

If we go into denial instead and let our pride keep us from going to confession to the Lord, what can we be sure of instead?

  • 1 John 1:10 -

What can our weaknesses show to others who are watching our faith in action?  What can we learn from Paul's thorn in the flesh, his weakness?

Read 2 Corinthians 12:7-10

  • Why was a messenger of Satan allowed to buffet Paul with weakness? vs. 7 -

Paul prayed (actually entreated or begged) God to remove the thorn of weakness from his life that Satan was allowed to bring.

  • Did God remove it?
  • What did God tell Paul? vs. 8-9 -
  • What did Paul decide to do in regard to his weaknesses and why? vs. 9 -

Paul decided to be well content with what weaknesses for Christ's sake? vs. 10

  • 1)
  • 2)
  • 3)
  • 4)

When we come to the end of ourselves and confess our weaknesses to God, we are humbling ourselves.  When we become humble and fall to our knees or on our faces, we are in the greatest position to receive strength from God.

What did Peter share with the church concerning this?

  • 1 Peter 5:6-7 -

What did Peter want us to be aware of concerning Satan?

  •  vs. 8 -

We are to resist him and be firm in our faith.  What are we to know and remember that will help us to stay firm in our faith?

  • vs. 9 -

What are we promised after we suffer for awhile under God's plan and promises?  What four things will God do for us in His time? vs. 10 -

  • 1)
  • 2)
  • 3)
  • 4)
  • Therefore, what shall we give to God? vs. 11 -

What instruction does Jesus give to us in regard to weakness?  How to we combat it?

  • Mark 14:38 -

Reflect:  How how this lesson helped you today?  Will it simply add to your knowledge of Scripture or will you honestly go to the throne of grace more often now?
