Mark, Chapter 14:

Jesus in Garden of Gethsemane

7.  Jesus and the eleven came to a place named Gethsemane.  He asked that they sit while He went to pray.  Who did He take with Him farther on?  Mark 14:33 -

  • 1)
  • 2)
  • 3)
  • What was our Lord's emotional state at this time? vs. 33 -
  • What did He need for His 3 close associates to do for Him? vs. 34 -

He went a little beyond them and fell to the ground and began to pray.

  • What was He asking God at this time of His own weakness and distress? vs. 35 - 36
  • What was He willing to do regardless? vs. 36 -

When He came back to His 3 friends, He did not find them praying with Him and for Him.

  • What did He find them doing? vs. 37 -
  • What did Jesus say to Peter?  vs. 37-38

Jesus went away 'again' and prayed the same thing.

  • What was this prayer He had prayed before? vs. 36 -
  • When He came to the disciples 'again' after His last encouragement to them, what did He find them doing 'again'? vs. 40 -

Jesus went to pray in hopes of having them join Him in prayer a third time.

When He came back 'again', they were sleeping and resting 'again'.  Suddenly things were upon them!

  • What hour had come ? vs. 41-42 -

So many times, we see a sweet picture of Jesus resting on a rock looking up to the heavens with the moon glowing on His face in Gethsemane. Is that the picture you get from the facts in the Word of this emotional day for our Lord?

To make this even clearer in our minds, let's record these verses as well:

  • Luke 22:43-44 -
  • Hebrews 5:7-8 -
  • How do the above verses help you know that He truly understands your times of weakness and desperation?

Betrayal and Arrest

8.  While Jesus was speaking, Judas, (one of His 12 that had walked with Him and watched His miracles, love, and compassion for three years), came accompanied by a crowd.

  • Who was this crowd made up of?
  • What did they carry with them? vs. 43 -
  • What sign would Judas give to them to know which One they were to seize and arrest? vs. 44 -
  • What did Judas called Jesus and what did He give to Him as He betrayed Him? vs. 45 -

Ponder:  Have you ever been flattered by a so-called friend and stabbed in the back at the same time by them?  Did you ever wonder if Jesus could understand your pain?  Maybe you realize today that He surely can.

What does John tell us about this event when Jesus asked the multitude who they were seeking?  (this is awesome) John 18:2-6 -

  • What did one of the Lord's disciples do to the slave of the high priest who came to arrest Jesus? vs. 47
  • What disciple is this according to John 18:10 ?
  • What did Jesus say to him in John 18:11?
  • What does Luke tell us that Jesus did for the slave at that time even during this time of distress for Himself? Luke 22:50-51 -

What did Jesus say to Peter?

  • John 18:11 -
  • Matthew 26:52-54 -

What did Jesus say to the multitude who were arresting Him?

  • Mark 14:48-49-
  • Luke 22:52-53 -
  • Matthew 26:55-56 -

What did the Lord's disciples do at this time?

  • Matthew 26:56 -
  • Mark 14:50 -

Jesus had told them this would happen.  Read His Words to them that predicted this:

  • Mark 14:27 -
  • John 16:32-33-

Who followed Jesus and what was interesting about how he was dressed?

  • Mark 14:51-52 -

(many think since this was written by Mark and included and the other gospels do not tell about this that this was Mark referring to himself.)

Jesus before His Accusers

9.  Jesus was led away to the high priest; and all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes gathered together.

  • Who followed Jesus at a distance right into the courtyard of the high priest?  Mark 14:54 -
  • What was he doing while there? vs. 54 -

The chief priests and the whole Council (high court of the Jews) kept trying to obtain the testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, but they were not finding any fault.

Although many came forward to give false testimony, there was not consistency in their stories.  Some were saying how He claimed that He would destroy the temple and build it back without hands in three days, but there was no consistency in this testimony which was not accurate in what He said about the temple.

Finally the high priest (Caiaphas) asked Jesus Himself about the testimonies given of Him.  Jesus kept silent.  Finally Caiaphas asked Him out right:  "Are You the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?"

  • How did Jesus answer him? Mark 14:62 -

At this statement, Caiaphas tore his clothes and said that was all the proof they needed.

  • What were they charging Him for that they deemed was worthy of death? vs. 63-64 -
  • How was Jesus immediately treated by those standing around Him at this time? vs. 65 -

Peter's Denials

10.  As Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant-girls of the high priest came.  She saw Peter warming himself by the fire.  She said she saw him with Jesus the Nazarene.

  • How did Peter answer her? vs. 68 -
  • When he went out onto the porch, what did he hear? vs. 69 -

The servant-girl began to say to the bystanders around Peter "This is one of them!"

  • What did he do again and again? vs. 70 - 71 -

Immediately after that, a rooster crowed a second time.

  • What did Peter remember of the words Jesus had spoken to him? vs. 72 -
  • What did this cause Peter to do? vs. 72 -

Review & Reflect:

This has been a long lesson with a lot of material to remember and reflect upon.  Let's review with questions and reflection:

  • Mary anointed our Lord with an alabaster vial of very costly perfume.  What items of value are we pouring out upon our Lord and His kingdom's work?
  • We looked at the heart of Judas that was wicked from the beginning and never did come into repentance.  We compared it with Peter's heart that wanted to serve Jesus with all of his heart & soul and really believed he could keep his commitment and yet he denied the Lord.  The Lord knew both hearts of both men and He knows our hearts today.  What differences did we see in Judas and Peter and how can you relate all that you learned about their hearts to your own life and walk before God?
  • We talked about how our weaknesses can be used to glorify God rather than have us walk a defeated life.  What are ways you learned in today's lesson that will help you turn being a victim of circumstances into being a victor over circumstances in your life?
  • Jesus struggled with the Father's will of dying the death of a criminal on the cruel cross for you and for I, but He knew that He could endure that cross if He submitted to the Father's will over His own will.  What are you dealing with that God would have you submit to His will today?
  • Jesus was falsely accused and condemned to death.  We saw Him be blindfolded and spit upon as well as beaten in the fast with the fists of His accusers.  We see Him be slapped in the face and told to prophesy as He was mocked.  How does this encourage you in your daily persecutions and how does it cause you to be thankful to the Lord for what He was willing to suffer on our behalf?
  • Peter had told the Lord that no matter who denied Him, he would personally die with Him.  He even cut off the ear of a man trying to take His Lord by arrest.  Peter was full of emotion and self-will for the right reasons!  Yet, he failed the Lord when the Lord needed him the most.  It caused him to weep and feel horrible and very much a traitor and a failure.  Have you ever felt that way?
  • How did the words of Jesus to Peter beforehand in Luke 22:31,32 encourage you?
  • How will it help you handle the failures you have made to this point in your walk with the Lord?
  •  What kind of throne does God the Father sit on according to Hebrews 4:16?
  • When are we suppose to go there?
  • When we go there, what do we find waiting for us?
  • Will you go there daily?
  • What did you also learn about weaknesses from Peter, Paul, and John in our lesson today?
  • How will you apply it all to your daily life?
