Mark Worksheet - Chapter 6

Worksheet - Mark 6

Review of Chapter 5:

  • 1) We saw the pathetic demonic possession of the man of Gerasene.  He was so violent, the people kept him in chains, but he still broke free and did harm to himself, gashing himself with stones.  He ran to Jesus when He saw Him and the demons knew who He was and begged to be sent into swine rather than to the abyss where they know one day they will be destroyed by Him.  The man was set free and put into his right mind again.  Our Lord delivers and sets free....
  • 2) We saw the synagogue official, Jarius, believe Jesus for the healing of his 12 year old daughter.  Although his daughter died before they could get to their house, Jesus told him to fear no longer but only believe.  Jesus showed that He was over life and death by speaking to the child and telling her to rise up....Our Lord brings life !.....
  • 3) We saw the desperate woman who had been to many doctors and had spent all her money trying to be made well.  She had been bleeding from a hemmorage for 12 yrs.  She knew if she could touch the hem of Jesus, she would be healed, and she was!  ... Our Lord heals!....
  • 4) We saw the compassion that Jesus had to deliver, to give life, to heal, but we saw in each case the person moved to God first to express their need or show their faith.  We saw Scriptures to encourage us to draw near to the throne of God's grace for help and mercy in our times of need.

Mark, Chapter 6:

1.  Jesus returned to His hometown of Nazareth.  His disciples followed Him there.  Jesus went into the synagogue to teach on the Sabbath day.  The people were astonished wondering where He got the wisdom He had and the ability to perform miracles.

  • How did the homefolk perceive Jesus? vs. 3 -
  • What names are listed as His known brothers? vs. 3 -
    • 1)
    • 2)
    • 3)
    • 4)

It is said He had sisters as well, but names are not given for any of them.

2.  What did Jesus say about how a hometown and relatives receive a prophet that comes from them?

  • vs. 4 -

3.  Jesus did not perform many miracles there in His hometown.

  • Why not?  vs. 5 -
  • He also went around to the villages and taught the people (vs.6)

4.  Jesus summoned the 12 disciples and began to send them out in pairs.  He gave them authority over unclean spirits and instruction not to take anything on their journey for provision.

  • How would the Lord provide for them? vs. 10 -
  • What were they to do at any place that would not receive them and take care of their needs while in that town? vs. 11 -
  • What did the disciples preach as they went out among the people? vs. 12 -
  • What did the disciples do as as well as preach on their mission trip? vs. 12 -

News of Jesus was spreading all over.  Some were saying that John the Baptist had risen from the dead and that was why the miraculous powers were at work in Him.  Others were saying that it was Elijah or one of the other prophets of old.

5.  In regard to John the Baptist:

  • Who did Herod fear that Jesus was and why was he bothered by his imagination?  vs. 16 -
  • Why did Herod put John the Baptist in jail in the first place? vs. 17-18 -
  • Herod's sister-in-law, Herodias, had a grudge against John the Baptist for all of this and wanted him put to death.  Why did Herod keep John 'safe' from harm at the time? vs. 19-20 -
  • 6.  Read Mark 6:21-29

    • What event brought about John's beheading?
    • Who requested John's head on a platter?
    • Why was she granted this request?
    • Who was behind her asking for this?
    • Herod had protected John from harm, but now he ordered him to be executed by beheading.  What changed his mind?
    • When John's disciples found out about his beheading, they came and took his body and laid it in a tomb.

    7.  Jesus' apostles returned from their mission work and reported to Him all that they had done and taught.  It had gotten where so many people came to Jesus and His apostles that they didn't even have time to eat (vs.31).

    • What did Jesus say they need to do for awhile and what did they do? vs. 30,32 -

    8.  The time alone did not last long for the people saw them going in the boat and ran to the place they were headed on foot from all the cities and were there at the place when they arrived.  Jesus saw the great multitude that had gathered there.

    • What did He feel for them and why? vs. 34 -

Ponder:  Jehovah- Raah - The Lord My Shepherd

Isn't it wonderful to know that we are considered as sheep to our Lord?  As a Shepherd with compassion for His sheep, He realizes we are totally helpless without His protection and care.

Comment on these verses about Him being our Shepherd and we being His sheep.

    • Psalm 23:1-6 -
    • Ezekiel 34:11-16 -
    • John 10:1-15 -
    • John 10:26-30 -
    • John 21:15-17 -
    • 1 Peter 2:21-25 -

How do you see yourself as His sheep today?

How do you see Him as your Shepherd?

    9.  Jesus began to teach them many things.

    • When it got late, what did the disciples say to Jesus? vs. 35-36 -

    10.  Rather than send the people away, Jesus told the disciples to feed them.  The disciples wondered if they should take 200 days of wages to feed this great multitude with food they would need to go buy for them.

    • What did Jesus feed them with instead? vs. 38 -

    11.  Jesus had the people sit down in groups of 50 and 100 on the grass.  He took the bread and the fish and blessed them in prayer.  He kept giving supply to the disciples to pass out to the people.

    • When the people all ate and were satisfied with plenty, how many baskets of broken pieces and fish were picked up from the remains? vs. 43 -

    12.  How many men alone were fed by this miracle of multiplication? vs. 44 -

    Ponder:  Jehovah-Jireh - My Provider

Jesus fed the hungry multitude with just 5 loaves and 2 fish.  He cares for our needs and will provide for our needs.

He is Jehovah-Jireh, the name means "The Lord Will Provide".  He has provided our salvation and will provide the necessary things for our lives.  We need not be anxious.

Read the following verses and comment on how our Lord provides for us:
    • John 6:35 -
    • Matthew 6:25-34 -
    • Luke 11:11-13 -
    • 2 Corinthians 9:10-11 -
    • 1 Peter 5:6-7 -
    • Hebrews 4:16 -
    • Philippians 4:6-7 -
    • Philippians 4:11-13 -

Do you have a spiritual need for salvation, for assurance that you are His today?  Do you have a financial need for food, clothing, shelter, transportation, a job?

God is saying "Don't worry over it, but pray about it."  He wants to provide for your needs.  May our hearts not be hardened after seeing the great provision made in feeding 5000 with only 2 fish and 5 loaves.  He is able and willing to come to help us.  Amen.

    13.  Jesus had His disciples get back in the boat to go ahead of Him to the other side to Bethsaida.  He sent the crowds away.

    • What did He go alone to the mountain to do? vs. 46 -

    14.  At evening time, when the boat was in the middle of the sea and Jesus was alone on the land, He could 'see' them straining at the oars because the wind was strong against them.

Obviously Jesus saw in His Spirit the trouble they were having.  About the fourth watch of the night (between 3:00 and 6:00 a.m.), He came to them, walking on the sea and intended to pass them by.

    • What did they think they saw?  vs. 49 -

    15. They all saw Him and were terrified, not knowing it was Jesus they were seeing.

    • What were Jesus' words to them? vs. 50 -

    16. When Jesus got into the boat with them, what happened to the winds? vs. 51 -

The disciples were utterly astonished, not having gained insight from the multiplication of the loaves even that this was truly the Son of God they were having an encounter with.  Their eyes had not been opened like they would be after the resurrection and the coming of the Holy Spirit into their hearts.

When they arrived to shore, they came to the land at Gennesaret.  When they got out of the boat, the people immediately recognized Jesus.  They ran about the entire country and began to carry the sick on pallets to the place where He was.

    17. What happened when Jesus entered villages, cities, or countrysides? vs. 56 -

    18. What happened to anyone who even touched the fringe of His cloak? vs. 56 -

Ponder:  Jehovah-Rapha - The Lord Who Heals

Are you needing a healing touch from our Lord today?

Reach out and touch the fringe of His garment in prayer.  He will heal us and restore us - body, soul, and spirit - in His way and in His timing - He is Jehovah Rapha, Our Healer.

Read the following verses and comment on how He heals us - body, soul, and spirit.
    • 1 Peter 2:21-25 -
    • 2 Peter 5:6-11 -
    • James 5:13-16 -
    • 2 Thessalonians 3:16 -
    • Philippians 4:4-9 -
    • Ephesians 5:18-21 -
    • 1 Thessalonians 5:23-24 -
    • Romans 8:26-27 -
    • Psalm 107:19-22 -

Our greatest need is to be healed of the sickness of sin.  Once we have tasted forgiveness for our sins, we can forgive others as Christ has forgiven us.

To be rid of anger, malice, bitterness, unforgiveness, and all these negative forces gives way to peace in the mind and in the heart and leads to better health overall.

I pray that God has used these verses to help you heal from the inside out, from the deepest needs of the heart to be a whole person - body, soul, and spirit.  Amen.
