Mark Worksheet - Chapter 15

Worksheet - Mark 15

Review of Chapter 14:

  • Death Plot Against Jesus/His Anointing For Burial - - - Mary anointed our Lord with an alabaster vial of very costly perfume.  Some of the disciples were indignant about her wasting the perfume which could have been sold and the money given to the poor.  One of these was Judas Iscariot who had no intent of giving it to the poor, but he kept the money purse and took money from the purse. (See John 12:3-6).  Jesus said it was to prepare Him for His burial and what she did would be remembered for all generations to come.
  • We looked at the heart of Judas that was wicked from the beginning and never did come into repentance.  We compared it with Peter's heart that wanted to serve Jesus with all of his heart & soul and really believed he could keep his commitment and yet he denied the Lord.  The Lord knew both hearts of both men and He knows our hearts today.  The Lord knows those who are His and we know by the Holy Spirit bearing witness within us that we are a child of God.
  • The Last Passover - -  Which is what we celebrate today as the Lord's Supper.  He said to remember His blood poured out for them and His body broken for them.  He told His disciples at the Supper they would all fall away from Him.  Peter said He wouldn't, but he did. We were encouraged by the words in Luke 22:31,32 where Jesus told Peter "beforehand" that He knew that Peter would deny Him in his weakest moment, but He also knew that he would turn again and be used to strengthen others.  We talked about how God will help us get back up after failure and be used to His glory.
  • Jesus struggled with the Father's will of dying the death of a criminal on the cruel cross for you and for I, but He knew that He could endure that cross if He submitted to the Father's will over His own will. This is an example for us when we are struggling between the weakness of our flesh and the will of the Father and the Spirit that helps us to submit. Jesus was falsely accused and condemned to death.
  • Betrayal by Judas/Jesus Is Arrested/Falsely Accused -- We saw Him be blindfolded and spit upon as well as beaten in the fast with the fists of His accusers.  We see Him be slapped in the face and told to prophesy as He was mocked. He truly took the chastisement for our sins upon Himself.  We should be so thankful.

Mark, Chapter 15:

Jesus before Pilate

1.  Early in the morning the whole Council of priests, elders and scribes held a meeting and bound Jesus taking Him to Pilate.  Pilate questioned Jesus, "Are You the King of the Jews?"

  • How did Jesus answer him? vs. 2 -

2.  The chief priests began to accuse Jesus harshly, but Jesus did not answer them or try to defend Himself.  Pilate was amazed.  It was customary at the feast of the Passover for the Romans to release one prisoner of their choice.  He brought up Barabbas as a good choice to think about.

  • Why had Barabbas been put into prison? vs. 7 -

Pilate asked the crowd if they wanted him to release Jesus, the king of the Jews instead of Barabbas.  He was aware of why they had delivered Jesus up to him.  It was nothing but pure 'envy' (vs.10).

3.  The chief priests stirred the crowd up to ask that Barabbas be released for them instead.  Pilate asked what he should do with Jesus.

  • What did the crowd shout ? vs. 14 -

To satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas and after having Jesus scourged, he delivered Him to be crucified.

  • In what way are we like the guilty one Barabbas who was released as Jesus the innocent was put to death?  Find Scripture to support your answer.

Jesus Is Mocked

4.  The soldiers took Jesus into the palace and called together the entire Roman cohort.  They dressed Jesus in purple (as a king would wear) and weaved a crown of thorns and put on Him as they mocked Him saying "Hail, King of the Jews!".

  • What did they continue doing to Him? (name 3 things) - vs. 19 -

After they mocked Him, they took the purple off Him and put His garments back on Him.  Then they led Him out to crucify Him.  A person was passing by named Simon who was from Cyrene, and he was pressed into service to carry the cross of Jesus to the hill.  This indicates that Jesus had lost too much blood and was too weak to carry it Himself.

The Crucifixion

They brought Jesus to the place Golgotha which is translated "place of a skull".  They tried to give Him wine mixed with myrrh, but He refused it.  They crucified Him and divided up His garments among themselves, casting lots to decide who would get what.

5.  He was crucified at the 3rd hour of the day which is 9:00 a.m. as we know time.  The charge that was inscribed above Him read "The King of the Jews".

  • Who was crucified on each side of Him? vs. 27 -

This was to fulfill Scripture in the Old Testament that said He would be numbered with transgressors.

  • What were the people passing by Him doing when they saw Him on the cross? vs. 31-32
  • What happened 3 hours later, the 6th hour, which is noon or 12:00 p.m. as we know time? vs. 33 -
  • How long did this darkness in mid-day last? vs. 33 -

6.  At the 9th hour, which is 3:00 p.m. in the afternoon as we know time...Jesus cried out asking "My God, My God, Why hast Thou forsaken Me?"..... Then Jesus uttered a loud cry and breathed His last.

  • What happened when Jesus breathed His last breath at 3:00 in the afternoon that day?  vs. 38 -
Look up references in a Bible concordance or Bible dictionary online or at home on the veil and give the reasons you found to help answer these questions.
  • What did the veil in the temple represent?
  • What was its purpose?
  • Why is it significant that it tore from the top to the bottom at the death of Jesus?
  • Is there a veil to separate us from God today?  Why or why not?  How do we enter into the presence of God as a priest ourselves today?

7.  When the Roman centurion, who was standing in front of Jesus, saw 'the way' Jesus breathed His last, what did He say about Him?

  • vs. 39 -

8.  Read the dying accounts and the statements made by Jesus from all 4 Gospel writers - Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.  According to all the details in these passages, what things would have touched this Roman centurion in "the way or manner that Jesus died" ?  What would make him know that this must have been the Son of God?

  • Matthew 27:45-54 -
  • Mark 15:33-39 -
  • Luke 23:34-48 -
  • John 19:25-30 -

9.  Do we realize that 'the way or manner' in which we suffer our darkest hours can lead another to the acknowledgement of believing in God?  Give an example if you have ever been in a situation like that or seen another Christian endure in that way.

10. There were some women looking on from a distance at the death of Jesus.  Among the women were:  Mary Magdalene and Mary (mother of James the Less, Joses, and Salome).

  • What did these women do for Jesus when He was in Galilee ministering? vs. 41 -

Jesus Is Buried

11. When evening had come, who asked Pilate for the body of Jesus ?

  • vs. 42-43 -

12.  What day was it according to vs. 42 and what day of the week would this have been?

  • vs. 42 -

13. Pilate wondered if Jesus was dead by this time so he asked the centurion if he was sure that Jesus was dead.  Hearing that He was for sure dead, he gave permission that His body be removed from the cross and buried.

  • How did Joseph prepare His body and where did He lay him? vs. 46 -

Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses looked on to see where He was laid to rest.

Review & Reflect:

Let's review with questions and reflection:

  • Jesus was falsely accused, beaten in the head repeatedly, spit upon, and mocked or made fun of.  He did not answer a word or try to defend Himself.  Does this give you any comfort in knowing that He understands the abuse you have endured in life?
  • On the cross, Jesus was ridiculed with people saying "Come off the cross if You are really God's Son!"..."Save Yourself"...but on the cross, Jesus' Words were "Father, Forgive them for they know not what they do."...When we are ridiculed for our faith, do we choose to retaliate or do we follow the example of Jesus and pray for Him to forgive those who persecute us?
  • When Jesus died, the veil in the temple was torn in two from the top to the bottom.  This veil separated the people from the holy of holies in the temple.  Only the high priest could go beyond that veil one time a year to sacrifice for the sins of the people.  Hebrews 9 teaches us that Christ appeared as our High Priest and His sacrifice was the new covenant that removes the veil of separation.

Conclusion & Application:

  • Write out Hebrews 10:19-25 -

Answer these questions:

  • Since the death and resurrection of Jesus - how do we go into God's holy place today?
  • What kind of heart are we to draw near to God with?
  • In light of God's faithfulness, what are we to do for one another as we see the day of His return drawing closer every day?
