Genesis Worksheet - Chapter 48

Genesis Chapter 48

Jacob had lived in the land of Egypt with his family for 17 years.  He is now 147 years of age. (Genesis 47:28).  Joseph has been told that his father Jacob is sick, so he took his two sons to see him.

1.  What  are the names of Joseph's sons? vs. 1 -

2.  When Jacob heard Joseph had come to see him, what did he do? vs. 2 -

Jacob told Joseph how God Almighty had appeared to him at Luz (Bethel) in the land of Canaan and blessed him.  As you should recall, that is when Jacob had the dream of the ladder going into heaven with the angels of God ascending and descending on the ladder.  You can review it in Genesis 28.

4.  Who were adopted into Jacob's family to be his own sons? vs. 5 -

The rest of Joseph's offspring born after these two would be called after him, but the first two would be called after Jacob as his sons in the inheritance of the land, etc.  Throughout the history of Israel, we will see references to Ephraim and Manesseh.

5.  What did Jacob tell Joseph about his mother Rachel? vs. 7 -

Jacob's eyes were so dim he could not see, but he was able to hold Joseph's sons to himself and embrace them.  These are the two he was adopting as his sons for the blessings.

6.  Why was Jacob so thankful for this moment? vs. 11 -

7.  How did Joseph respond to his statement? vs. 12 -

Joseph took the boys with Ephraim on his right and Manesseh on his left.  When Jacob (Israel) stretched out his right hand, he laid it on the head of Ephraim, who was the younger one ... and laid his left hand on Manasseh's head, crossing his hands, although Manasseh was the firstborn.

The blessing given:

"May my name live on in them, and the names of my fathers Abraham and Isaac; and may they grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth." (vs. 16)

8.  What did Joseph do concerning where his father's hands were laid on the boys' heads? vs. 17-18

9.  How did Jacob (Israel) respond to that? vs. 19 -

10. What was his final blessing that was spoken on them? vs. 20 -

Then Jacob (Israel) told Joseph he was about to die, but God would be with him and would bring him back to the land of his fathers.
