Genesis - Worksheet Chapter 1

Genesis, Chapter 1

The Creation

1.  In the beginning, God (Elohim) created the heavens and the earth.

The Hebrew name for God Elohim is in the plural meaning Gods.  We know that Jesus was also involved in creation.  See these verses and make a summary statement of how He was involved as God Himself from all of eternity.

State how the world was created as well as uheld and sustained today by Jesus.

  • John 1:1-14 -
  • Colossians 1:15-20 -
  • Hebrews 1:1-4 -
  • Hebrews 1:10 - 12 -

2. We also see the Holy Spirit involved in Creation in this plural sense of Elohim.

  • What are we told the Spirit was doing in verse 2?

When God creates man and woman on the sixth day of creation, He confirms this plurality when He says "Let Us Create man in Our Image". See vs. 26

3.  Describe the creation on the following days and notice how God said they were 'good'.

  • Day 1 (vs. 3-5) -
  • Day 2 (vs. 6-8) -
  • Day 3 (vs. 9-13) -
  • Day 4 (vs.14-19) -
  • Day 5 (vs. 20-23) -
  • Day 6 (vs.24-31) -

Application:

4. What does the fact that we live in a universe shaped by God mean to us, and how do we respond to God as Creator?

Read some insights below to help you in your prayer for today and everyday:

  • Psalm 104 -
  • Psalm 148 -
  • Isaiah 40 -
  • Day 7 (see Genesis 2:1-3) -

Application:

5. God intends for us to rest as well as believers in Jesus.

  • Read Hebrews 4:1-10 and summarize how you are to rest and what you are to rest from?

It is not about observing a certain 'day' or 'feast'.  It is about living a life that knows that God is never surprised by a world event or by personal things in our lives.  When we trust in Him, we can respond with obedient confidence that he is in control and experience His promised rest.

Conclusions - Things to Think About

6.  Just as God is the source of His creation, so creation can bring us back to God (Romans 1:20).

  • What can we learn about God by looking at creation?
  • What do we owe to God because He is our Creator?

7. God divides the light from the darkness, the waters from the waters, the dry land from the waters, and He divides the days and the years by the heavenly lights.  Apply this to your life.

  • What kinds of divisions or separations does God make in your life?

8. God made trees to bear fruit.

  • How does this compare to the fruit a Christian should bear?

9. What do you think it means that man was made in the image and the likeness of God (v.26)?

  • In what ways should we try to be like God?
  • In what ways should we not try to be like God?

10. God told man to be fruitful, and multiply and replenish the earth (v.28).  Make a spiritual application of this command.

  • As a Christian, how can we be fruitful?
  • How can we multiply?
  • How can we replenish the earth?

State how the world was created as well as upheld and sustained today by Jesus.
    • John 1:1-14 – Verse 9-10 ‘That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.’ This points to Jesus as the Light of the World, and when God gave us Light in Genesis, I believe He was actually telling us then that He was giving us Jesus. It also links Jesus to creation because it says that the world was made by Him. Jesus was truly in the beginning, He was the Word, and the Word was God, and the Word became flesh so that we with our finite minds could understand and believe.
    • Colossians 1:15-20 – Verse 16-17 ‘For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: And he is before all things and by him all things consist.” This again tells us that Jesus was there in the creation and that He is the reason that all things are holding together today. In verse 18 He is the head of the body, the church.. He was the firstborn from the dead that in all things he might have preeminence.
    • Hebrews 1:1-4 – speaking of Jesus “ heir of all things, ..by whom also he (God) made the worlds;…being the brightness of His glory….and the express image of His person…upholding all things by the word of His power, ….” These verses say again that Jesus was there in the beginning, was the Light, and was the power that holds all things together.
    • Hebrews 1:10 - 12 – “for whom are all things, and by whom are all things”
    2. We also see the Holy Spirit involved in Creation in this plural sense of Elohim.
    • What are we told the Spirit was doing in verse 2? “moved upon the face of the waters”
When God creates man and woman on the sixth day of creation, He confirms this plurality when He says "Let Us Create man in Our Image". See vs. 26
    3. Describe the creation on the following days and notice how God said they were 'good'.
    • Day 1 (vs. 3-5) – Light….saw that it was good… divided Light from darkness (in my mind, this is when He divided good from evil) since prior to this(according to Reese Chronological Bible), Lucifer had already been cast out of Heaven and had taken angels with him. (There is also an alternate placement of this event following the completion of creation, but for my train of thought at the moment, I choose the first for this point.)
    • Day 2 (vs. 6-8) – firmament in the midst of the waters… and God called the firmament Heaven….somehow at this very moment, I believe that even here God was showing us that there would be a New Heaven and a new Earth after the final division of Good and Evil…. (which is yet to come, but rapidly approaching). Seems that as I look at creation today, it truly speaks of the second coming of Christ as well as the first. 
    • Day 3 (vs. 9-13) – Earth, seas, herbs, trees
    • Day 4 (vs.14-19) – Two great lights, one to rule by day and the other to rule by night.
    • Day 5 (vs. 20-23) – Creatures to live in the sea, and winged fowl
    • Day 6 (vs.24-31) – Every animal to live on the land; and man in His image to rule over all the animals, and fish and fowl.
    Application:
    4. What does the fact that we live in a universe shaped by God mean to us, and how do we respond to God as Creator? We take so very much for granted. We don’t always see what God has created, nor do we remember that we came from dust, and only by the breath of God did we become a living soul.
