Parable of Ten Virgins
Jesus went on to explain His coming with the parable of the 10 virgins. Read vs. 1-13.
1. Why were the five foolish? vs.3,8,11,12 -
2. Why were the five prudent or wise? vs. 4,7,9,10 -
Realize that while the bridegroom was delaying, they 'all' got drowsy and began to sleep, but when the shout came at midnight, the prudent were prepared to meet Him!
Parable of the Talents
Jesus followed this with the parable of the talents. This is about a man that went on a journey and entrusted his own slaves with his possessions. He gave them different amounts according to their own ability. (The Lord knows exactly waht each of us can handle and are equipped to do)
- One was given 5 talents to invest. He made 5 more for the master!
- One was given 2 talents to invest. He made 2 more for the master!
Although they were given different amounts of stewardship to begin with, they both gave 100% of what they had into his kingdom. We are accountable for what we have personally been entrusted with, not to compare ourselves with others.
- One was given 1 talent to invest. He decided not to receive it or invest it, but to hide it. After a long time, the man returned to settle accounts with them.
3. What did he say to the ones who had used their talents and had made more for their master? vs. 21,23 -
4. What did he say to the one who was afraid to use his small amount and hid it? vs. 26-28 -
Note: It was obvious from his statement to his master that he didn't trust him to do the right thing. (vs.24-25). Each person is given the offer of eternal life and that offer holds within it at least one gift to use in the body of Christ for His glory and for the care of the body. If a person refuses that one thing, he has forfeited everything. When a person is afraid and ashamed of even the one thing offered, they are saying they cannot trust God to take care of them. He is not worth the investment and the risk.
- Matthew 25:29 - "For to everyone who has, more shall be given, and he will have an abundance; but from the one who does not have, even what he does have shall be taken away."
When we receive the gift of eternal life and we invest our time, talents, possessions back into the master's work - we are given more grace to use for the serving and blessing upon blessing ... but if we don't even receive and use that gift, but hide it in shame, pushing down the calling and ignoring the draw of His Spirit to us...we will even lose that opportunity to enter into His kingdom one day.
Oh how I pray that no one reading this will be ashamed to confess Jesus as Lord and to live for Him, investing all that He has blessed you with back into His service. We will hear "Well done" and we will enter the joy of our master! The Joy in serving!
5. What does the Lord do for us when we are faithful in the few things? vs. 21,23 -
The Judgment
After these parables, Jesus went on to tell them of the judgment that will take place when He returns. Most scholars believe this is a judgment of how people of all the nations treated the Jewish race. Jesus says "these brothers of mine". It could also be interpreted how we treat one another in the body of Christ as well.
6. Who will be gathered before His throne? vs. 31 -
7. How will He separate the people? vs. 32,33 -
- Jesus will give those on His right (the righteous) their 'inheritance' that has been prepared for them since the foundation of the world! (wow!)
8. List below the areas that Jesus will reward in and realize that each time it is done to the 'least of His brethren' (Jewish or Christian), it is done for Him. Amen.
- vs. 35 -
- vs. 35 -
- vs. 35 -
- vs. 35 -
- vs. 35 -
- vs. 35 -
Jesus will accuse the unrighteous of NEGLECTING to do these very same things. When they did not do it for the least of His brethren (Jewish or Christian), they did not do it for Him.
9. What will happen to the unrighteous who do not know Him and therefore have not shown love for His brethren? vs. 46 -
10. What will happen to the righteous who do know Him and because of the love He has shown them, they have shown that love to His brethren? vs. 46 -
