Background:
Universal Language; Babel; Confusion
1. How many languages were in the world after the flood and Noah's growing families? vs. 1
2. As the people journeyed east, they found a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there.
- Who was the ruler of Shinar? Genesis 10:9,10 -
Remember what we learned about Nimrod yesterday? Look here to read again.
3. The people decided to use brick and tar to build a city and a tower, as tall as heaven.
- What did they want to make for 'themselves'? vs. 4
4. What did they not want to happen? vs. 4
5. What two things had God commanded them to do? Genesis 9:1 --
- (1)
- (2)
Although God wanted them to "go into the whole earth", they wanted to stay in one place and make a name for "themselves". Unfortunately, God's church is sometimes that way today, aren't we? |
6. What is God's Word to believers? Mark 16:15 -
7. The Lord 'came down' to see the city and the tower the sons of men had built.
- Because these people were 'one' and had the same language, what did God say they would be able to accomplish? vs. 6 -
Think about it! If we are truly 'one' in the body of Christ and are completely unified in our godly goals, what are we able to accomplish today for Him?
8. Comment on Acts 4:32-35.
- What was the result of the early church being of one heart & soul?
Name four things they enjoyed:
- 1)
- 2)
- 3)
- 4)
God said: "Come, let US go down and confuse their language, that they may not understand one another's speech." God has always been 3 persons in 1 from all eternity. We know from the Scriptures in the New Testament that the Holy Spirit and Jesus were part of His existence always.
9. What did the Lord come down and do?
Name two things. vs. 8-9 -
- 1)
- 2)
Therefore, its name was called "Babel" which means "confusion". That was the beginning of the land that came known as Babylon.

Remember, since the land locatons of Genesis 10 happen chronologically after the languages become confused....we saw that in the days of Peleg, the earth was divided. It could be that natural causes such as an earthquake happened to move the one land into continents located at different parts of the earth's temperatures etc. which would eventually work into different skin tones, etc. This was also the beginning of different languages in the world. Approximately 4000 years later, according to Wycliffe Bible Translators, there are nearly 6,000 languages today! |
Descendants of Shem
The remainder of Chapter 11 gives us the descendants of Noah's son, Shem.
This was the son 'chosen' to continue the godly seed of the Messiah's lineage through Abram (Abraham), Isaac, and Jacob and eventually through David and into Joseph and Mary's line as well to the birth of Jesus, the Messiah......
1. Comment on these Scriptures about the 'seed' of Abraham:
- Matthew 1:1 -
- Acts 3:25-26 -
- Galatians 3:16 -
Shem's descendants in this chapter go to a man named Terah who has three sons named Nahor, Abram, and Haran. |
2. What happened to Haran? vs. 28 -
3. Who did Abram take as a wife? vs. 29 -
4. Who did Nahor take as a wife? vs. 29 -
5. What is mentioned about Abram's wife, Sarai? vs. 30
6. Who did Terah take with him when left the UR of the Chaldeans to enter the land of Canaan? (vs. 31)
- 1)
- 2)
- 3)
They journeyed as far as Haran and settled there.
7. How old was Terah when he died? vs. 32 -
