Genesis - Worksheet Chapter 6

Genesis, Chapter 6

The Corruption of Mankind

1.  What happened as men began to multiply on the face of the earth and daughters were born to them? vs. 1-2

This phrase "sons of God" has been interpreted to refer either to angels or to human beings.  Let's look at the two view points and see why there is support for each.

What are angels called in Job 1:6 and Job 2:1 ?

  • What are we told happened to angels that did not keep their 'proper' domain in Jude 6 - 7 ?
  • Where are God's angels that have sinned by following the rebellion of Satan, not keeping their proper purpose of creation to worship God alone?
    • 2 Peter 2:4 -
  • Do you see why this could be one possibility of interpretation?

Also,

  • what type of people were on the earth after the sons of God came into the daughters of men as the daughters of men bore children to them?  Genesis 6:4 -

These people were of great size and strength.  The Hebrew word means "fallen ones".  In men's eyes they were "mighty men of renown" but in God's eyes they were sinners (fallen ones) ripe for judgment.

  • What do you learn about these people in Numbers 13:31-33 ?

Some say that cohabitation with angels, though mentioned in mythology would be excluded by the nature of the created order.

See why they would say this from the following verse:

  • Mark 12:25 -

Their viewpoint is that "Sons of God" could refer to the men through the line of Seth since that was the lineage that the promised Messiah would come through and the "daughters of men" to sinful women probably from the wicked line of Cain, suggesting intermarriage between the two.

We can all draw our own conclusions about that and while it is interesting to look at, it is not the main purpose of our lesson.

2.  How long did God say His Spirit would strive (put up with) man at that time?  vs. 3 -

It is widely accepted that this was the pronouncement of when God would send His judgment through the flood and this was the period of grace that men had to turn from their wickedness and follow the ways of God.

  • What does I Peter 3:20 tell us the patience of God did at that time?

3.  What did the wickedness of men and the evil intent of their hearts do to the heart of God their Creator?  vs. 5 - 6

  • Does our sin grieve God today?
  • What does our sin do to His heart?
    • Ephesians 4:30 -

When King David sinned with Bathsheba and prayed the prayer of repentance in Psalm 51, he knew he had broken God's heart.

  • Who did he say his sin was against?
    • Psalm 51:4 -

Back to Genesis 6:

4.  What did God say that He was going to do to His creation and why? vs. 7

5.  Who found favor in the eyes of the Lord at that time? vs. 8

  • How is he described?  vs. 9

6.  How is Noah described for us in the New Testament?

  • What did he preach during the time he was doing the Lord's work?
  • Hebrews 11:7 -
  • 2 Peter 2: 4-5 -

7.  What were the names of Noah's 3 sons? vs. 10

  • 1)
  • 2)
  • 3)

8.  Because of the wickedness and violence of all mankind on the earth, God was going to destroy all flesh which had the breath of life on earth except for Noah and his family.

  • What would God establish with Noah, his wife, his sons and their wives (these 8 people) ?  vs. 18

God gave the exact directions to Noah on how to build the ark of safety (vs.14-16).  It was 3 decks high and must have been so amazing.  God also told Noah to take two of every living thing, male and female, into the ark and keep them alive.  This was so that when they started over on the earth, the animals would repopulate.  He told Noah to take things to eat for food.  Noah did all that God commanded him to do.

9. God will judge the wickedness of men again a final time.

  • What are we told about the judgment of God against those who have rejected Him when He decides it is time for all things to end?
  • 2 Thessalonians 1:6-10 -
  • 2 Peter 3:7 -

10. Who is the ark of safety from God's judgment for the believer?

  • 1 Thessalonians 5:9-11 -
  • 1 John 5:11-13 -
  • Romans 8:1 -

There is no condemnation or wrath for the believer of the Lord Jesus Christ.  Jesus took our curse and we are in the blessings of Abraham the believer (Galatians 3).  If we have the Son, we have passed from death to life, and we have eternal life in Him.  Praise God.
